Ezra Furman Shares Two New Singles; “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” and “Evening Prayer” July 15, 2019 For Immediate Release Ezra Furman Shares Two New Singles; “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” and “Evening Prayer” New Album, Twelve Nudes, Due August 30th Via Bella Union Photo Credit: Jessica Lehrman With his highly anticipated new album, Twelve Nudes, due August 30th via Bella Union, Erza Furman has shared two new tracks from the LP. Of his new single “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” Furman says: “This is a romantic song of transgender longing. It’s another entry in my series of ‘I Wanna’ songs (in the tradition of the Ramones). I thought it was time we had an ‘Earth Angel’ for the queers. Of course because it’s an Ezra Furman tune, there’s a little bit of desperation, religion and body-talk.” Of “Evening Prayer”, Furman states: “Our rallying cry. We music fans go to shows for transcendence; it’s like being called to prayer. But as Abraham Heschel said, ‘Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and to ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism and falsehood.’ I want all our fans to become activists. We punk fans have so much energy to give to the fight against injustice, i.e. the abuse of the poor by the rich, i.e. climate change. So this is one to get you in the mood.” Last year was a championing year for Furman - since the release of the “layered, baroque pop melodrama” (Billboard) Transangelic Exodus, Furman has garnered immense praise, both for Transangelic Exodus and the soundtrack he created for Netflix’s Sex Education (he and his band also appeared in an episode). Twelve Nudes, his new and “spiritually queer” punk record, continues this same wavelength, and is an incendiary and inspiring follow-up. Across the album, Furman channels pent-up energy, distinguished by sharp, lacerating observations, confessions and proclamations. Twelve Nudes was recorded quickly in Oakland in Fall 2018 and was mixed by venerated producer John Congleton (Sharon Van Etten, St. Vincent). The result is an album that is less stereotypical punk than raw, raucous rock’n’roll. The album has two spiritual heroes - the late great punk Jay Reatard and Canadian writer and philosopher Anne Carson. The title stems directly from Carson, who used the term “nudes” to describe the meditations she used to deal with intense pain in her life. “This is our punk record,” says Ezra Furman. “We made it in Oakland, quickly. We drank and smoked. Then we made the loud parts louder. I hurt my voice screaming. This was back in 2018, when things were bad in the world. The songs are naked with nothing to hide.” One of my goals in making music is to make the world seem bigger, and life seem larger,” Furman concludes. “I want to be a force that tries to revive the human spirit rather than crush it, to open possibilities rather than close them down. Sometimes a passionate negativity is the best way to do that.” Watch the video for “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” - https://youtu.be/nuUnAAUSgf0 Listen to “Evening Prayer” - https://youtu.be/nuUnAAUSgf0 Watch the Video for “Calm Down” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLecVxlnZG8 Pre-order Twelve Nudes - http://smarturl.it/ef_twelve Ezra Furman Tour Dates: Tue. • Masculinity, Misogyny, and the Rhetoric of Online Musical Discourse
MASCULINITY, MISOGYNY, AND THE RHETORIC OF ONLINE MUSICAL DISCOURSE By Kelli D. Smith A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Musicology—Master of Arts 2018 ABSTRACT MASCULINITY, MISOGYNY, AND THE RHETORIC OF ONLINE MUSICAL DISCOURSE By Kelli D. Smith Online discussion sites, such as social media platforms and discussion forums, have long served as spaces in which fans of specific musical genres can negotiate their identities and construct the borders to their musical community. Due to less involvement from corporate popular music labels, the most tight-knit online communities form around non-mainstream musical topics when compared to their mainstream counterparts. Despite the common assumption that the anonymity of the internet allows for equitable dialogue, the marginalization and silencing of women and minorities is prevalent throughout non-mainstream music communities. In this thesis, I integrate methodologies from media studies, musicology, ethnomusicology, and sociology to examine the ways in which user-generated content serves to police the boundaries of online music communities. Each chapter delves into the unique ways fans in different communities use language to preserve the white, male hegemony. Chapter 1 delves into an examination of the 1970s punk fanzine, Slash to introduce the ways in which music fans leverage performances of masculinity to demonstrate authenticity and power in punk communities. Chapter 2 continues this line of inquiry, but I shift my focus to performances intellectualism in the contemporary online independent (indie) music community. In Chapter 3, I move away from genre-based dialogues and examine self-fashioning, essentialism, and taste in high-end audio blogs and forums.

BLOOMSBURY ACADEMIC & SPECIAL INTEREST RIGHTS GUIDE 2018 Contents HISTORY AND POLITICS HISTORY AND POLITICS ...................................................1 Group Think Christopher Booker Bestselling author and columnist Christopher Booker considers whether we have found ourselves in PHILOSOPHY .................................................................3 the grip of self-delusion and the mentality of the crowd. Politics has always been coloured by ‘group think’. Each political party or faction or grouping naturally has its own idea of how it sees the world more clearly than its rivals. Political decisions have ended badly because a little group of powerful men have collectively become so fixated on a single narrow CULTURAL STUDIES .....................................................5 view of what they hoped to achieve that they shut their minds to anything that contradicts it. Take for example the recklessly obsessive way in which George W. Bush and Tony Blair launched their invasion of Iraq in 2003; the rise of Islamic movements recently such as Al Qaeda or IS. This has shown us the power of group think at its ultimate extreme. So contagious was the power of that particular form of group think that thousands more would-be jihadists flocked to join the cause so intoxicated by the LITERARY STUDIES AND LINGUISTICS ................................6 thought of randomly killing ‘infidels’ that they were happy to commit suicide in pursuit of their fantasy cause. Global warming, political correctness (the new age of thought-crime), racism, sexism, positive discrimination, hostility to religion, the United States of Europe are all issues investigated in this book. There is even a chapter on Charles Darwin. MUSIC AND MEDIA STUDIES ..............................................8 It is only by obtaining some sort of insight into the psychology of crowds that it can be understood how powerless they are to hold any opinions other than those that are imposed upon them.

PRESS DOSSIER NOS PRIMAVERA SOUND 2018 LINEUP TICKETS AND SELLING POINTS CONTACTS BIOS 2 NOS PRIMAVERA SOUND During its seventeen years in Barcelona, the Primavera Sound festival has managed to assert itself as one of the best festivals in Europe. That reputation, with both the audience and industry professionals, has been built essentially upon the quality of successive line-ups – Pixies, Aphex Twin, Patti Smith, Blur, Neil Young, Sonic Youth, The Cure, Pulp, Portishead, Pet Shop Boys, Arcade Fire, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Lou Reed are some of the thousands of artists that have played this festival in Barcelona. In 2012, Primavera Sound took a great leap in its growth with Optimus Primavera Sound – NOS Primavera Sound since 2014. The choice of Porto as Primavera Sound’s second city was not unrelated to the Iberian symmetry which the city shares with Barcelona. The Portuguese edition of Primavera Sound represented a leap to a new plateau of recognition, with NOS Primavera Sound currently referenced as a compulsory stop within the landscape of the best festivals in Europe. For the seventh consecutive year, Porto will host the Portuguese edition. From 7th to 9th of June 2018, the NOS Primavera Sound will return to Parque da Cidada: one of the main attractions of the event that will once again take center stage in the aesthetic and environmental concerns that characterize this festival. NOS Primavera Sound has a wide selection of international artists, along with a significant representation of the Portuguese music scene. The artistic line follows the same guidelines of the Barcelona event, distinguished by the variety of styles and also new bands, highlighting both the local and new scene and international artists with long and respected careers.

JULY 30, 2020 – 9 AV 5780 JEWISHVOL 44, NO 27 JOURNALJEWISHJOURNAL.ORG How a family found the will to survive COVID-19 By Steven A. Rosenberg JOURNAL STAFF MARBLEHEAD – Friday, May 1 was supposed to be another workday for Phil Padulsky. While many residents across the state had been working from home since the Covid-19 pandemic began almost two months earli- er, Phil did not have that option and was considered an essen- tial worker. He had been in the food industry since he was a kid, helping his dad with the family business, and eventually serv- ing as food service director at school districts in Marblehead, Gloucester, and Stoneham. At 56, Phil was still a food ser- vice director in private indus- try. At the end of his shift on May 1, the weekend beckoned – but Phil noticed that he had a dry cough, and was feeling achy. When he arrived home in Marblehead, he decided to take a nap. Then he sat down to have dinner with his wife, Stacey. “I couldn’t taste anything when I had dinner,” said Phil, who suspected he might have contracted the coronavirus. By then, there had been 62,000 Covid-19 cases in the state, with 3,716 deaths. Nurses and doctors applaud as Phil Padulsky is transferred to the Spaulding Rehab in Boston after he spent a month battling the coronavirus. The following day he started At right, Padulsky, and his in-laws Bonny and Joe Glixman. to spike a fever and decided to get tested for the virus.
