  • Since Cornelius's Music Often Evokes the Harmonies, Instrumentation, And
New Sound 25 Loren Y. Kajikawa “An Escape From the Planet of the Apes: Accounting for Cornelius’s International Reception” Article received on October 4, 2004 UDC 78.067.26 (52) Cornelius Loren Y. Kajikawa “AN ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES: ACCOUNTING FOR CORNELIUS’S INTERNATIONAL RECEPTION” “Monkey See, Monkey Do”: Authenticity, Imitation, and Translation Abstract: Electronic/rock musician Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada) belongs to a loosely constructed genre of Japanese pop termed “Shibuya-kei.” Groups in this genre—Pizzicato Five, Flipper’s Guitar, and Scha Dara Parr among others— emulate the sounds and textures of pre-existing tunes, transforming Western popular music and creating a new and unique sound that has become a source of pride to Japanese music enthusiasts. Cornelius has produced a number of imaginative CDs and videos, and fans and critics in North America, Western Europe, and Australia have embraced his work. Yet Cornelius’s popularity, which is a rare occurrence for a Japanese pop musician in the West, raises a number of interesting questions about how listeners interpret music across boundaries of language and culture. First, this paper explores how Cornelius has been received by American critics, arguing that written reviews of his music stand as acts of “translation” that interpolate Cornelius’s music into Western discourses while overlooking the Japanese cultural context from which such work emerges. Secondly, this paper draws on published interviews to contextualize Cornelius’s use of “blank parody” as a possible defense strategy against this burden of Western civilization. And finally, this paper offers its own interpretation of Cornelius’s musical significance: Putting forward a utopian, post-national, cybernetic artistic vision, Cornelius’s electronic music collages avoid invoking racialized bodies in ways that have been problematic for Japanese jazz, rock, and hip-hop musicians.

  • If You Want to Know How to Cure a Hangover, Ask a Musician, Especially One Who Has Recently Been in Rehab
If you want to know how to cure a hangover, ask a musician, especially one who has recently been in rehab. “Pedialyte, that’s what you need,” Jason Isbell told me. He was standing outside a recording studio in suburban Nashville, lighting a cigarette. “It’s the stuff you give kids who are dehydrated from diarrhea. It’s like 10 Gatorades in one bottle.” Isbell is big and gregarious — he’s 6-1, 200 pounds — with wary, deep-set blue eyes that flash and size you up at the same time. On this early afternoon in February, those eyes were puffy and red-rimmed. He had only three days to finish “Southeastern,” his new album. He had four days until his wedding. Like Ray Liotta in the third act of “Goodfellas,” he was manic and barely sleeping. “Coffee and adrenaline,” he said. “They’ll see me through.” In the old days, this kind of stress would have sent Isbell, who is 34, into a tailspin. He found fame early and wasn’t ready for it. When he was 22, he joined the Drive-By Truckers, the brilliant and hard-living Alabama band. He quickly wrote several of the group’s signature songs, including the title cut of its 2003 album, “Decoration Day,” and a beautiful bummer of a tune called “Goddamn Lonely Love.” He almost as quickly burned out. His first marriage, to Shonna Tucker, the band’s bassist at the time, came unstitched in public. There were some ugly scenes. Isbell’s fondness for Jack Daniel’s did not become him.

  • Jason Isbell's "Anxiety" Is Such a Lonely Tune
By Lloyd Sachs Even more than (forgive the comparison) Billy Joel's "Honesty," Jason Isbell's "Anxiety" is such a lonely tune. Nuzzled against his lover, the song's first-person narrator seems free of serious relationship worries. But the world around him – the Trumpian world, that is, in all its rotten injustices and imbalances – has him feeling like he's trapped in a bad fantasy. "I'm wide awake and I'm in pain," he sings. If there's a word that best reflects Isbell's state of being these days, though, it's consistency. As has been widely reported and won't be rehashed here, he suffered through times of great tumult and inconsistency as a result of serious substance abuse – so serious it got him kicked out of Drive-By Truckers a decade ago, capping a six-year stint with the great Southern rock band. Now, having straightened himself out in impressive fashion, he's a model of dependability, priding himself on his ability to go out night after night with his 400 Unit and deliver a memorable show. The 38-year-old native of rural Alabama, who has always considered himself a guitar player "first and foremost," also is also proud of his continued growth as an instrumentalist. So it was a dream come true last July – a "huge event," as he put it – when Martin Guitar unveiled the Jason Isbell Signature Edition D-18. Isbell thrilled to the moment not only because Martin has been so admired over so many years – hello, consistency – but also because his association with the company brought him back full circle to his earliest days as a guitarist.

  • Masculinity, Misogyny, and the Rhetoric of Online Musical Discourse
MASCULINITY, MISOGYNY, AND THE RHETORIC OF ONLINE MUSICAL DISCOURSE By Kelli D. Smith A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Musicology—Master of Arts 2018 ABSTRACT MASCULINITY, MISOGYNY, AND THE RHETORIC OF ONLINE MUSICAL DISCOURSE By Kelli D. Smith Online discussion sites, such as social media platforms and discussion forums, have long served as spaces in which fans of specific musical genres can negotiate their identities and construct the borders to their musical community. Due to less involvement from corporate popular music labels, the most tight-knit online communities form around non-mainstream musical topics when compared to their mainstream counterparts. Despite the common assumption that the anonymity of the internet allows for equitable dialogue, the marginalization and silencing of women and minorities is prevalent throughout non-mainstream music communities. In this thesis, I integrate methodologies from media studies, musicology, ethnomusicology, and sociology to examine the ways in which user-generated content serves to police the boundaries of online music communities. Each chapter delves into the unique ways fans in different communities use language to preserve the white, male hegemony. Chapter 1 delves into an examination of the 1970s punk fanzine, Slash to introduce the ways in which music fans leverage performances of masculinity to demonstrate authenticity and power in punk communities. Chapter 2 continues this line of inquiry, but I shift my focus to performances intellectualism in the contemporary online independent (indie) music community. In Chapter 3, I move away from genre-based dialogues and examine self-fashioning, essentialism, and taste in high-end audio blogs and forums.
