HISTORIC ST HELIER: FIRE!

It was around midnight of 12th/13th May 1921, that Mrs Osmond, who lived opposite the Opera House, was woken by the sound of breaking glass. She woke her husband up and he looked out into the road and noticed thick smoke coming out of the top of the theatre building. He rushed to the police station and the fire brigade was dispatched. By the time the firefighters had brought along their equipment, flames were already coming through the roof. When the roof collapsed, a blaze of light occurred and a shower of sparks was spread around. By 1 a.m. nothing was left of the roof except the largest rafters. The flaming débris had fallen into the body of the theatre where the seating and woodwork had ignited and burnt out the interior. The flames were soon seen spilling outside the building, but luckily the lack of wind meant that there was little danger of the fire spreading to adjacent properties. It was 4 a.m. by the time the fire brigade was satisfied that the fire was out and they could return to their post. The masonry façade of the Opera House resisted the effects of fire except for a few cracks, and the safety curtain had protected the stage and backstage area. Stalls, gallery and balcony had essentially been destroyed. It was a reminder of just over 20 years previously when the predecessor Opera House building had been destroyed by fire on 28th March 1899. We hope to see our Opera House, following the past year's emergency, re-open refurbished and ready to receive audiences again, as it has made a comeback so often before.
