CONFESSIONS Saturday, 10am or by appointment

OFFICE HOURS Monday thru Friday 9am-4pm

Second Sunday of Good People of Holy Cross, I don’t know about you, but wherever I am and whatever I’m doing, I’m always a few minutes ahead in my mind. If I’m reading, I’m thinking about walking. If I’m walking, I’m thinking about lunch. I’m always worried about the next thing, and deeper, I’m always longing. I’m always longing for the future. There’s something missing in my life, something unfulfilled, and in the season of Advent says: “YES” there is! Advent’s message is: wake up! A couple of weeks ago the full moon was shining through the bare branches of the trees over St. Martin’s food pantry. I sat in the friary dining room and was just aware of how beautiful it was, and wasn’t thinking ahead. Awareness is holiness. Because the future really scares us, we think about it so much because we’re afraid of it. We’re afraid of all the things that might go wrong and all the things that will go wrong, all the things that will hurt us, and we think that by worrying and obsessing and getting ourselves ready we can keep ourselves from getting hurt. But we can’t. Who of us by worrying, Jesus says, can add one moment to the span of our lives? All of us, through awareness, can live in the moments we have. All of us, through listening, and through seeing, and through opening ourselves up, can be filled with the presence that fills all things. The light of the moon falls on everything equally. The light of the moon is falling through the bare branches of the tree. “All the paths of the Lord are kindness and constancy,” The Psalmist says. Awareness is holiness. Our task this Advent is simply to be alive; to be fully aware. That’s a good Advent task, in fact, it’s a good discipline. Blessings, Fr. Jude Michael

A Pastorela is a play performed around Christmas that recreates the from the bible and the birth of baby Jesus. Children from around Mexico participate in Pastorelas by acting, singing, and dancing. It is a century old Christmas What is a Pastorela? tradition. Do you know where this tradition comes from? It started when Spain was still ruling Mexico. The indigenous people were accustomed to representing the Gods in different ways so adjusting to plays was not hard for them. The first Pastorela was written in Nahuatl (language) , it was created to be understood by the indigenous people: "Adoration of the Magi" written by Olmos. He knew how to incorporate acceptance and emotion through these reenactments. After that, the first bishop of New Spain, Juan de Zumarraga, in 1530, issued an order to hold a "Farce of the Joyful Nativity of Our Savior." After that, the monks continued to create these representations, and as new religious orders arrived, they became more popular. Pastorelas are plays that recreate the biblical passage where the shepherds follow the Star of to find the . In order to reach the birth place of the Redeemer, they have to experience a series of changes in fortune and confront. The Devil will do everything possible to prevent them from completing their mission. It is at that moment that the Archangel Michael intervenes to defend the shepherds on their journey. Join our Pastorela at Holy Croos!
