Source : www.pib.nic.in Date : 2020-05-08 SEASONAL RAPID ADVANCEMENT OF SURGING GLACIERS IN KARAKORAM RANGE: A POTENTIAL NATURAL HAZARD Relevant for: Geography | Topic: Various Landforms, Changes Therein and the Effects of Such Changes Ministry of Science & Technology Seasonal rapid advancement of surging glaciers in Karakoram Range: A potential natural hazard Posted On: 07 MAY 2020 5:45PM by PIB Delhi Scientists from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology(WIHG), Dehradun an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology have found a seasonal advancement in 220 surge-type glaciers in the Karakoram Range of Ladakh through detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram range using satellite images and thermal data. ‘Surging’ or ‘Surge-type’ glaciers are a certain type of glaciers that have shown advancement in volume and length over a period of time. The behaviour of these glaciers, which represent 40% of the total glaciated area of the Karakoram goes against the normal trend of considerable reduction in volume and length of most glaciers in the Himalaya in recent decades. Surging of glaciers is potentially catastrophic as it can lead to the destruction of villages, roads and bridges. It can also advance across a river valley and form ice-dammed lake. These lakes can form catastrophic outburst floods. Therefore, monitoring of glacier surges, ice-dammed lake formation, and drainage is of paramount importance. Assessment and regular monitoring of surge-type glaciers of Karakoram has been a daunting task. Because in the conventional method, it required a ground-level assessment of subglacial flows. Keeping these challenges in mind, a team of Scientists from WIHG led by Dr Rakesh Bhambri, carried out a detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram rangecrackIAS.com using of multi-temporal and multi-sensor satellite images (Landsat 8 OLI, ASTER and Sentinel-2), Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and thermal data. -

Jej kierownikiem był kapitan (obecnie pułkownik) Sher Khan, kierownikiem sportowym Ryszard Kowalewski, a uczestnikami Andrzej Bieluń, Anna Czerwińska, Jacek Gronczewski (lekarz), Krystyna Palmowska, Tadeusz Piotrowski, Jerzy Tillak i wspinacze pakistańscy. Sukces został ładnie podsumowany przez Janusza Kurczaba: „Choć wyprawa obfitowała w konflikty, zarówno na linii Pakistańczycy – Polacy, jak i między grupą męską a dwójką kobiet, to efekt końcowy był bardzo korzystny. -

268 THE AMERICAN KPINE JOURNAL. I983 Pakistan K7 Attempt. Japanese led by Masayuki Hoshina made an attempt on K7 (6934 meters, 22,750 feet) by way of the 17,000-foot west col. They ap- proached from Hushe via the Charakusa Glacier, where they established Base Camp on May 27. They fixed some 5000 feet of rope. The expedition reached a little higher than 20,000 feet. Hidden Peak (Gasherbrum I), North Face Attempt. Granger Banks, Rich- ard Soaper, Lyle Dean and I arrived at Gasherbrum I Base Camp on May 19 after eleven days on the Baltoro approach with 23 porters. After placing a food cache at 21,325 feet in the Gasherbrum La Icefall, we descendedto recuperate. On June 3 we returned up the West Gasherbrum Glacier icefall to the cache in two days. The next day we climbed the right side of the north face in twelve hours unroped. The face consisted of wind-blown ice on the bottom, mixed climbing on a rotten rock a&e in the middle and a final third of “funky” n&C up to 80”. We carried four days’ food. We were on the north face itself, well left of Messner’s route. On the top of the north face, on the northwest shoulder of Hidden Peak, we placed our high camp at 23,300 feet next to Messner’s and Habeler’s destroyed tent. On June 6 we rested, hoping to join Messner’s route the next day and climb to the summit. We were wrong. The next three days were spent battling gale winds. -

Knowledge about the coverage and characteristics of glaciers in High Mountain Asia (HMA) is still incomplete and heterogeneous. However, several applications, such as modelling of past or future glacier devel- opment, run-off, or glacier volume, rely on the existence and accessibility of complete datasets. In particular, precise outlines of glacier extent are required to spatially constrain glacier-specific calculations such as length, area, and volume changes or flow velocities. As a contribution to the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) and the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) glacier database, we have produced a homogeneous inventory of the Pamir and the Karakoram mountain ranges using 28 Landsat TM and ETMC scenes acquired around the year 2000. We applied a standardized method of automated digital glacier mapping and manual cor- rection using coherence images from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite 1 (ALOS-1) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar 1 (PALSAR-1) as an additional source of information; we then (i) separated the glacier complexes into individual glaciers using drainage divides derived by watershed analysis from the ASTER global digital elevation model version 2 (GDEM2) and (ii) separately delineated all debris-covered ar- eas. -

212 Karakoram 1983 PaulNunn Photograph 2 In Pakistan 42 mountaineering permissions were granted including a few dual applications. Most popular was Nanga Parbat with II parties, closely followed by the various Gasherbrums (14), including several dual permissions. On K2 the Italian expedition led by F. Santon was successful. It approached the mountain from China and took the N ridge route pioneered by theJapanese in 1982. From an advanced base at 4900m four high camps were established and all 20 members reached Camp 3 at 7500m. On 31 July Agostino da Polanze and Joseph Rakoncaj (32) started to climb from Camp 4 (8 lOOm) though conditions were poor with deep snow. At 20.45 they reached the summit, and descended only 60m before an enforced bivouac. Good equipment and preparation enabled them to survive and descend safely. Josepli Rakoncaj is an experienced Czech high altitude climber. Subsequently a filming party comprising of the veteran Kurt Diemberger (51) andJulie Tullis (44) reached Camp 4, but were prevented from going further by bad conditions. On the Pakistani side of K2, Basque, Spanish and British attempts were unsuccessful. The Basques tried the Abruzzi Spur, the Spanish, the W ridge and Doug Scott's party a route on the S face. On the Gasherbrums Wojciech Kurtyka (35) andJerzy Kukuczka (35) made notable alpine style ascents after a period of acclimatisation. They climbed the long SE ridge ofGasherbrum 2 through points nOOm and 7770m, bivouacking at 6500m on the Gasherbrum La and at 7300m. In this way they reached the summit ofGasherbrum 2 (8035m) on I July. -

Imperial College Shimshal Expedition July 2007 Joseph Johnstone - Dominic Southgate Neil Dowse - Andras Szollar Robert Porter Supported by Imperial College Exploration Committee University of London Convocation Trust Royal College of Science Association Imperial College Shimshal Expedition 2007 Synopsis The Imperial College Shimshal Expedition 2007 comprised of five students: Joseph (Joe) Johnstone, Neil Dowse, Andras Szollar, Robert Porter and Dominic Southgate. The initial proposal objective of the trip was an ascent of Sonia Peak (6340m) in the North Ghuzerav Mountains near Shimshal, in Northern Pakistan and was the first visit to the Greater Ranges for all but the leader, Joe. After many months of planning, the team departed the UK on 10th July for Islamabad, via Dubai. The first two nights were spent in Rawalpindi purchasing equipment and organising transfers up to Gilgit at the edge of the mountains. The intended transport (public bus) was not possible due to man-made roadblocks on the Karakorum Highway but fortunately seats were found on flights instead. Food and fuel was purchased in Gilgit and jeep transfers arranged out to Shimshal. Three days were spent in Shimshal acclimatising, finalising equipment and organising porters. Accessing Sonia Peak was not possible in the end due to the cost of porters and the number required for the long trek in. An alternative objective was selected that was closer to Shimshal; Yazghil Sar (6001m), which although lower in altitude than Sonia Peak, was a slightly more technical ascent. The trek to base camp took two days, with eight porters, two yaks and a donkey. Two of the porters then also stayed at base camp for approximately half the time spent on the mountain. -
