Salsa2bills 1..1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 293 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to musician Butch Miles, an Austin resident whose accomplishments as a drummer continue to attract worldwide attention; and WHEREAS, Butch was born in Ironton, Ohio, on July 4, 1944; he grew up in West Virginia and earned a bachelor 's degree from West Virginia State College; he started playing the snare drum in his school band at the age of nine and became interested in playing the drumset at 14; he was soon playing with dance bands, and his first big break came in 1971 when he started playing with Mel Torme 's band; and WHEREAS, Currently touring with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, Butch has played at every major jazz festival around the world, including the Newport Jazz Festival in New York, the Grande Parade du Jazz in Nice, and the Bern Jazz Festival; he has recorded over 100 albums and has played on three Grammy Award winning albums; and WHEREAS, Butch has performed with many prominent jazz artists and luminaries, such as Frank Sinatra, Dave Brubeck, Ella Fitzgerald, and Benny Goodman; he has appeared on "The Tonight Show," "The Merv Griffin Show," and the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and in a number of films; and WHEREAS, Butch honed his skills listening to his first drum idol, Gene Krupa; he cites Count Basie drummer Sonny Payne as a major influence on his style, which combines technical mastery with creative finesse and blends the maturity of experience with youthful imagination and limitless energy; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Butch Miles for his accomplishments as a drummer and extend to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. Webster’s solo on this record is so iconic that audiences would insist on note-for-note renditions of it in live performances. Even now, it stands as a testament to Webster’s mastery of expression, predicting techniques and patterns that John Coltrane would use decades later. Ellington also shows off his Harlem stride credentials in a quick solo before going into an orchestrated sax soli, one of the first of its kind. After a blaring shout chorus, the piece recalls the A section before Harry Carney caps everything off with the droning tonic. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue. This piece is remarkable for two reasons: Diminuendo & ​ ​ Crescendo in Blue exemplifies Duke’s classical influence, and his desire to write more ​ grandiose pieces with more extended forms.

He follows Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Grover Mitchell, Bill Hughes, and Dennis Mackrel in leading one of the greatest and most important jazz orchestras in history. Founded in 1935 by pianist William James Basie (1904-1984), the orchestra still tours the world today and is presently ending a two-week tour in Japan. The orchestra has released hundreds of recordings, won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, has appeared in movies, television shows and commercials, Presidential Inaugurals, and has won 18 Grammy Awards, the most for any jazz orchestra. Many of its former members are some of the most important soloists, vocalists, composers, and arrangers in jazz history. That list includes Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Jo Jones, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Thad Jones, Joe Williams, Sonny Payne, Snooky Young, Al Grey, John Clayton, Dennis Mackrel and others. Mr. Barnhart, born in 1964, is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.
