Alexandra Reid - Canada’S Rising Dressage Star by Alexa Cheater
eCanadian Connection Alexandra Reid - Canada’s Rising Dressage Star By Alexa Cheater At 20 years old, Alexandra Reid of Carlisle, Ontario, has al- ready made a name for herself on the North American dres- sage scene. With aspirations of an international career, this up-and-coming rider is definitely one to watch. Reid had a remarkable 2012 season, claiming the bronze medal for her Young Rider Individual performance at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championship in Lexington, Kentucky. Days later, she was on a plane headed to the London Olympics where she groomed for Canada’s David Marcus, her coach of the past two years. Alexandra returned from London to make a clean sweep of the FEI Young Rider divisions at both the CDI-W NEDA Fall Festival in Saugerties, New York and the prestigious CDI-W Dressage at Devon in Pennsylvania riding VIP, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Deborah Miculinic. With a combination of talent and tenacity, this rising star is sure to shine in 2013 as she continues to contest the Young Rider division. How did you begin riding? I always loved horses. I grew up in a small rural town so horses were very accessible. All of my friends had ponies and horses and there were plenty of schooling barns close by. What is your most memorable moment with horses? That special moment you share with a horse when you know Alexandra Reid and VIP they really know who you are, trust you and genuinely enjoy your company. List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below. -

History of Horses.Pdf
Horses - A History * History comes from researching bloodlines, Shire of Cote du Ciel; Lady Isabel Cordera * not necessarily from historical accounts. Origins: The horse is one of the oldest domesticated animals of ancient times. We begin our look at the horse not from the beginning of time, but from the time right before domestication took place. If you are curious about the origins of the horse, you can do a literary search of these early horse species from the scientific group Condylarth: Eohippus, Mesohippus, Miohippus, Pliohippus, and Equus Caballus. Special Mention: It is worth knowing that Equus Caballas did exist on the American continent in the Ice Age, but migrated to Europe and Asia from existing land bridges from glaciers. These glaciers melted, trapping the predecessor of the horse in the European and Asian continents, and the Equus Caballas remaining on the American Continent, went extinct. From Equus Caballas, we come across two types of breeding: Natural Selection: ‘Survival of the fittest’ - environment dictated survival. Viability of animal genes depended on environment. These animals are built to survive. Artificial Selection: Survival based on human intervention - humans decided which traits to breed for, and did not allow breeding between ‘less superior’ animals. These animals are bred to work. Our modern horses come almost exclusively from artificially selected means. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Equus Caballas, 3 ancient horse breeds developed, which became the foundation of breeding stock for ages to come: 1) The Asiatic Wild Horse These horses were discovered in 1881 by Poliakov as a wild Mongolian horse herd. These horses survived millions of years of natural selection and are ‘pure’ representations of history. -
In Dutch Warmblood Horses Presented for Pre- Purchase Examination
Irish Veterinary Journal Volume 61 Number 1 Incidence of osteochondrosis (dissecans) in Dutch Warmblood horses presented for pre- purchase examination Nicolas J. Vos Unit of Veterinary Surgery, University Veterinary Hospital, School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland Current contact details: University Veterinary Centre Camden, Faculty of Veterinary Science, The University of Sydney, 410 Werombi Road, Camden, New South Wales 2570, Australia Tel: 0061 24655 0777 Fax: 0061 24655 1212 Email: [email protected] Abstract Data are lacking in the literature regarding the incidence of osteochondrosis (dissecans) [OC(D)] in relation to lameness evaluation in Dutch Warmblood horses. The objective of this retrospective study was to assess the incidence of radiological abnormalities consistent with osteochondrosis or osteochondrosis dissecans in 1,231 sound Dutch Warmblood (DW) horses presented for pre-purchase examination. Standardised (Dutch) pre-purchase examination protocols were evaluated. The pre-purchase examination included a clinical, lameness and radiological evaluation, performed at a private equine clinic in the Netherlands. Radiographical examination included views of the distal (DIP) and proximal (PIP) interphalangeal, metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal (MCP/MTP), tarsocrural (TC) and femoropatellar (FP) joints. Radiographical evidence of OC(D) was found in 44.3% of clinically sound DW horses. In this study, 443 horses (36%, n=1,231) had evidence of OCD and 102 horses (8.3%, n=1,231) had evidence of OC on pre-purchase radiographs. The results also indicated that the TC joints were significantly more likely to be affected. A considerable number of horses did not demonstrate any lameness, although radiographs revealed OC(D). -
1 a Nice Cool Breeze Blew Past My Neck As I Got out of My
A nice cool breeze blew past my neck as I got out of my car in front of Marina Burgers’ home. It was May 2018, and I remember it being a very warm day for the Netherlands; we usually don’t get that much sun and warmth. I was there to do a photoshoot for my project Krachtpatsers which translates to "Powerhouses." For that assignment, I visited over 20 Dutch breeders and owners of classical Dutch warmbloods. The project was intended as a kind of tribute to the classical-type Dutch warmblood, a type I really love. Although I've photographed some very nice Harness horses and Groninger horses, most of my subjects were KWPN Gelders horses, which are my favorites. Marina happened to own three Gelders mares in foal and a handsome young Gelders gelding. Picture 1: Rolexia (Bazuin x Strawinsky) They were two full-sisters by Rubus B. (Ahoy x Pygmalion) and their younger brother by Floris BS (Negro x Elegant). Their dam was the majestic, big-boned classic Gelders chestnut mare Rolexia (Bazuin x Strawinsky). How excited was I that day to photograph so many of this gorgeous type together! In the Netherlands, the Gelders horse is officially designated a "rare breed". Like the Groninger horse, they are monitored by the Foundation of Rare Breeds, and the GenBank in Wageningen stores their frozen semen. However, the Gelders horse is actually seen as a type, not a breed. It is one of the three official Dutch warmblood types in the KWPN studbook, besides the Riding type (dressage and show jumping) and the Dutch Harness horse. -
