Okay VADA volunteer workforce...now is the time to think seriously about our championship show October 19-22 at the Horse Center...I know you guys haven't heard much from me because of a change in our website...seems that I cannot bulk email the membership like I used to and keep everyone updated on volunteer opportunites..

Having said that, I am beginning the schedule for the BLM show and need EVERYONE'S support and help as usual...lots of scribing, stewarding, running and gate keeping available, and I can work around ride times as long as you let me know when and which days...our VADA website details all the wonderful volunteer VIP rewards available also at www.virginiadressage.org

So...be a sport! Lend a hand (or two, or your spouse's, or your kids) and volunteer for one of our flagship VADA shows....I will feed you lunch and I have heard nice things about sweatshirts and ball caps this year....plus, you know you will get that nice feeling of helping out when you are really needed! It's that "pay it forward" principle again that you know I'm so fond of.....I'm always available at [email protected] , or 540-556-6649...MANY MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE....waiting to hear from you! :)) ATTENTION COMPETITORS

VADA Board Minutes July 15, 2006 Members Present: Bettina Longaker (CH), Jane Palmer (Shen), Lynn Whiteside-Jones (Central), Alison Douglas (Central), Susan Dallas (SW), Sarah Denham (SW), Anne Draine (NE), Capri Winsor (Central), Dianne Boyd (Nova), Nancy Lowey (CH), Sandy Johnson (SE). The meeting, held in the coliseum of the Lexington Horse Center, was brought to order at 11:00 by President Bettina Longaker. The minutes of the May 6, 2006 VADA Board meeting were read, corrected and unanimously approved. In the absence of Treasurer Jesse Ginsburg, who was riding, Tina reported that she had sent the footing campaign money in the amount of $4,000.00 to John Scott at the Lexington Horse Center and a $2500.00 sponsorship to the NAYRC. Membership in VADA is around 1,000. Tina urged chapters to start preparing early for their fall membership campaign. Chapter and USDF 2007 dues will be due Nov. 1, 2006. The USDF Reg. 1 Youth Team Championships, to be held July 22-23 at Morven Park is still in need of volunteers. Chapter news: Central is doing a clinic on July 29 with Nancy Lowey. Michael Mattson will do a freestyle clinic on Aug. 26-27 at Morgan Manor in Doswell. There is a charge of $85.00 for non-member participation. Auditing is welcome. Central is planning for a licensed show in 2007 at Aria Farm. Discussion is underway for having the licensed show at the new State Fairgrounds in 2008. The SW 2006 licensed show was very successful and profitable. SW also had a successful Fix-A-Ride clinic earlier and a schooling show on July 1. There will be a clinic with Amy McElroy in September and their annual camp is scheduled for October. The Nevada licensed show went very well with rain holding off until show was over. They have had several schooling shows and will have a Wendy Murdoch clinic in August. The Nova June show was a success. They continue to have very well attended monthly schooling shows. The Rudolph Rostek clinic to be held at Madeira School, McLean, VA on July 28-30 is filling up. There will be 2 licensed shows in the fall. Diane Boyd reported that Morven Park will continue to operate for 2 more years. Shannon Pedlar is running the side. Commonwealth at Culpeper has done some renovations and may be used in the future for dressage events. Repairs have been made to the barns, including new roofing and gates. Footing in the arenas is considered very good. Nova is also looking at Commonwealth for future licensed shows. It is possible the Youth Team Championships will also be held there in future years. The Charlottesville and Fredericksburg chapters are planning for the twin shows at Rosemont in early September. There will also be a breed show on the Friday before Rosemont. SE reported that their schooling shows have been huge this summer. There is a licensed show at Carlton Farm coming up. ShenVADA has had two successful schooling shows and a Fix-A-Test. There will be a schooling show at the Shenandoah County Fair on Sat., Aug. 26. Participation by members has been high. Annual awards: Tina is continuing to analyze additional awards for J/YR and might table it for this year until the new tests come out. Sandy Johnson moved that we follow the USDF guidelines in establishing awards for Juniors. and Young Riders and disregard all Freestyles. Seconded by Lynn Whiteside and passed unanimously. VADA 2007 Clinic: Tina advised that Linda Zang is unable to do a clinic in the Spring of 2007 and suggested we consider contacting someone else. The names of Anne Gribbons and Marlene Schneider were suggested as possible clinicians for March 2007. Adult Team Update: The event has been advertised but the response is unknown. Janice Mumford is the Chief d‘equippe. Annual Awards Brunch: Tina will investigate the Doubletree in Charlottesville. It is a good central location. The date to be announced will probably be Jan. 21, 2007, which is the 3rd weekend in Jan. Awards Brunch Silent Auction: Chapters should advertise the silent auction as a fund-raising opportunity for the Education Fund to overcome the bargain basement mentality. Each chapter needs to get its chapter members involved, plan in advance, and obtain authority to buy clinics and judges for upcoming chapter events. Sandy Johnson is working on getting chapters involved and encouraged all to get on the ball and notify her of contributions as soon as possible. BLM Update: Dianne Boyd briefly updated ongoing issues involved in running the BLMs in late October. Sue Rowden, Fredericksburg chapter, has volunteered to fill in for Holly Veloso as Volunteer Coordinator. It was decided to not do the usual USDF “silent auction” because of extenuating circumstances. The next VADA Board meeting will be Sept. 2, 2006 at the Doubletree Inn in Charlottesville at 11:00 a.m. Respectfully submitted by Jane Palmer, Sec.

VADA BOARD MINUTES SEPT. 2, 2006 Members Present: Robin Dannels (NOVA), Michelle King (NOVA), Dianne Boyd (NOVA), Cindy Aspden (CH), Bettina Longaker (CH), Beth Jandl (CH), Alison Douglas (CC), Sharon Ackley (VADAF), Sue Rowdon (VADAF), Beth Rippel (SE), Susan Dallas (SW), Jane Palmer (SHEN).

The meeting was brought to order by President Tina Longaker. Minutes from the July 2006 meeting were approved as amended. In the absence of Jessie Ginsberg, Robin Dannels reported a total of $60,748,35 in the VADA accounts. Broken out, there is approximately $35,000 in the show account, $16,000 in the operating account, $9,000 in the Chapter Grant account, and $6,000 in the Shell Gafford account.

Beth Rippel reported the total 2006 VADA membership at 943. The USDF has requested that it receive a big part of the 2007 membership names and fees by Nov. 1. This earlier membership date will make it possible to get a majority of VADA members listed in the 2007 Purple Book.

Chapter News: Using 2006 Chapter Education Grants, SWVADA will host a clinic with Amy McElroy in September and SE, in mid-October, will have a clinic with Hoken Thorn. SE had 100 rides at their Aug. licensed show at Carlton Farms. Sharon Ackley reported that the Twin Shows at Rosemont have received great sponsorship but there has not been great interest in the Breed Show. ShenVADA’s Fair Schooling Show with Judge Janice Mumford in late August had good participation. Their final schooling show of the year will be held in early October. NOVA reported that the 3-day clinic with Rudoph Rostek at Madiera School was a wonderful experience. The feedback was very positive. Over 50 auditors attended the sessions. NOVA hopes to have him back again next year. The Freestyle Championship scheduled in Sept. is full. The Youth Team Competition maxed out Morven Park and was a raging success. Dianne Boyd suggested giving incentives to encourage other chapters to send volunteers for this event next year. NOVA has the date and place for the youth team competition for 2007. Assistance from other chapters will be greatly appreciated. CH will have its final schooling show in October at Grayson Farm. Central Chapter also has one more schooling show. There will be a Region I meeting at Morven Park in November.

VADA Year-End Awards: FEI Young Rider; FEI Junior, and FEI Ponies awards will be made. There will also be FEI Freestyle awards in addition to the open awards. It was moved by Beth Rippel, with respect to year-end awards, to keep the open classes as open. Seconded by Robin Dannels and Michelle King. The motion was unanimously approved.

Tina reported that VADA has not been able to secure a clinician for the Annual VADA clinic. Rather than attempting to have the clinic, it was moved by Robin Dannels that in 2007 VADA give each chapter an additional educational grant of $1,000 to be awarded at the annual awards banquet to be used to cover the costs of putting on new tests clinics. The clinics should be open to the general public, not just members. The motion was seconded by Cindy Aspden and unanimously approved. Dianne updated the group on the upcoming 2006 BLM Championships. She showed pictures of the logos to be used on sweatshirts and hats for the volunteers and the fleece jackets and windbreakers for the championship class winners. The Annual Awards Banquet will be held Jan. 21, 2007 at the Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville. A luncheon buffet will be served at $25.00 per person, which covers tax and gratuities. Set-up for the luncheon will begin at 11:00 with the buffet opening at 12:00. The USDF Convention will be held in Kansas City this Nov. 28 - Dec. 3. Tina will attend and asked for two volunteers to go with her. VADA will pay $500 per person. The next meeting of the VADA Board will be held Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 at the Doubletree in Charlottesville. The meeting was adjourned at 1:35. Respectfully submitted by Jane Palmer, Secretary

Hello to the VA Chapters of VADA!

I'm the organizer for the Virginia Equine Extravaganza and I wanted to let you know about the dressage clinics at our upcoming expo. We are thrilled to have Jane Savoie as our dressage clinician this year. We have a few openings for riders in her clinics and I wanted to offer VADA the first chance to fill any of those opening. Below is a detailed description of each of the clinics and the horses needed for each one.

1. Teaching Your Horse To Go Forward- Sat. 9:30 AM ( Need 2-3 LAZY horses ) Are you exhausted from having to use strong aids to get your horse to go forward? If that sounds like you, you need to learn how to put your horse in front of the aids so you can do less work and he can do more. Jane offers you a simple step by step process that teaches your horse to be more responsive to all of your driving aids (leg, seat, voice and whip).

2. Lateral Work-- Sat. 4:15 PM (need 2-3 horses who can leg yield) .Now that you've put your horse in front of the driving aids and he's happy to go forward, the next step in your training program is to teach him to go sideways. Learn why it's important for your horse to go sideways as well as the aids to ask him to do so. This demonstration covers Turns on the Forehand and Leg-yielding.

3. Suppleness-- Sun. 11:15 (need 2-3 stiff horses) Unlock your horse's body! We all know it's not fun to sit on a stiff horse. Well, you're not stuck having to ride a horse whose body feels like concrete. Jane will show you four simple suppling exercises to loosen your horse's poll, neck, shoulders, and hindquarters.

4. Collection--Sun. 2:45 PM (need 2-3 horses working at 3rd level or higher) Collection, otherwise known as self-carriage, is a wonderful goal for riders in ALL disciplines. That's because a horse in self-carriage is simply more athletic and, therefore, better able to do his job easily. In this demo, Jane offers you four exercises to help develop self-carriage.

I have riders for a few of the clinics, and several have openings. It would be wonderful if you could send this out to your membership so they would have the opportunity to participate. Riders could be in multiple clinics, based on meeting the criteria for each clinic. The price would depend upon how many clinics they wanted to participate in, and whether or not they wanted stabling. The most a rider would pay would be $180 which would include multiple clinics, a stall for all three days and admission to the expo for all three days for the rider. We would also like to give Jane a huge welcome with well-attended clinics. If you could send an announcement out to your membership that would go far in alerting a very savvy dressage audience to this exciting opportunity. We are also looking for a volunteer or volunteers to assist Jane for the weekend, which would include picking her up at the airport on Friday and taking her to the hotel, as well as arranging to get her to and from the show each day and wherever else she may need to go. If you have someone who might like to be Jane's "assistant" for the weekend, that would be awesome! It could be split between a few people if that makes it easier. Thank you so much for your time and, in advance, for your support. If you have any suggestions or ideas as to how we can make this event even more beneficial to the dressage community in the future, please let me know. I would love to have your input!

I look forward to hearing from you! Best regards, Vicki

Check Your Hours!

SVDA members are asked to check your volunteer hours, which are listed in this newsletter. Remember that you need at least 8 hours of SVDA volunteer credits to qualify for year-end awards.

Please contact me immediately if your hours are incorrect or if you have questions about your time. For parents who have worked for their children, please make sure I have credited the time to the child so they don’t miss out on an award.

If you don’t have your 8 hours in yet, contact me ASAP – there are volunteer spots still available for the October and November schooling shows as well as the Hokan Thorn Clinic.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered for our club this past year! As the saying goes, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Robyn, Head-Honcho of the SVDA volunteers

RAIN PONCHOS...... $2.00 IT TRULY IS AN HONOR JUST TO BE NOMINATED!! Once again its time to submit nominations for the SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD for EXCELLENCE IN SPORTSMANSHIP. Please take a few minutes to think about your friends and fellow VADA members. There are surely several who exhibit the qualities of good sportsmanship. If you know someone who is always willing to help a fellow competitor; who cares more for their horse’s welfare than for winning a trophy; and/or who values the judges’ criticisms rather than complaining about them, because they really want to improve their riding. These are people who deserve to be recognized for the fine example they set for us all. Please take a few minutes to send in a nomination. Your prose doesn’t have to be worthy of a Pulitzer, just honest and to the point. Remember there’s a 200 word limit on all nominations, (this is already 144 words long not counting the title!) so it shouldn’t take you long at all. If you value sportsmanlike behavior, and if you’re tired of cut-throat competition, then please recognize those you know who uplift our sport. We need to honor those of our members who bring honor to our sport. Please take the time! It would be a sad commentary if we had no members worthy of nomination! Email your nominations to [email protected] , or fax them to 804-994-0268 (press send button as soon as the machine message starts), or snail mail them to:

Louise West 29400 Secretariat Rd. Ruther Glen, VA 225436-4128

October 15, 2006 is the stated deadline for nominations, but there is some “wiggle room”. Call or email me if you need more time. (My phone and fax numbers are the same.)
