– 3 – Welcome to the 48th Annual Plowshares! he Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace TFestival is the Syracuse Peace Council’s largest annual fundraiser. All profits support our work to educate, agitate, and organize for a peaceful and just world. The peace and justice movement is very under-resourced compared to the huge amount of money devoted to supporting US imperialism in its many forms. SPC is extremely resourceful and frugal, maximizing every dollar we receive. Please donate what you can and join us in the work. SPC survives and thrives with the support of a broad community of members and supporters. If you aren’t already among that group, we hope you’ll consider joining. There are many, many ways to get involved: see pages 14 and 29 for more information, and please enjoy Plowshares! What is Plowshares? lowshares is a community marketplace of diverse, handmade Pcrafts. Music, food and a spirit of fellowship create a weekend of grassroots commerce. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect at year’s end and share in the life and culture of a village marketplace that has no corporate headquarters. Our Central tradition is the collective effort of many peace and justice workers creating a once-a-year celebration within this larger community. We are pleased to be part of Nottingham High School’s annual calendar, contributing to its role as a community resource. And they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. –Isaiah, 2:4

Statement of Purpose he Syracuse Peace Council (SPC), founded in 1936 as an Tanti-war organization, is over 80 years old, making it the oldest grassroots anti-war organization in the country. Over the decades the Peace Council has acted to bring about a world in which war, violence, and exploitation in any form will no longer exist. Today SPC is a vibrant organization involving hundreds of people in a full program of activities to educate, agitate and organize for peace and social justice. We believe that social injustices cannot be understood in isolation from each other, nor can they be overcome without recognizing their economic and militaristic roots. Included in our vision of a better world is an economic system that places human needs above monetary profit. Our political values and personal lives shape and reflect each other. In both we are committed to nonviolent means of resolving conflict and to a process of deliberation and decision-making that responds to the needs of all.

– 17 – Working Towards Zero Waste at Plowshares

This year the Plowshares Craftsfair & Peace Festival is furthering its commitment to sustainability by working toward a zero waste event. In collaboration with OCRRA we will have recycling stations that include bins for food scraps and compostable flatware, napkins and plates, in addition to bottle, can, and paper recycling. With the exception of the coffee and soup lids, the Mission Restaurant is using all compostable and recyclable materials. Compost and recycling bins can be found throughout the site. Together we can all enjoy a greener Plowshares!
