Hospitals Recognized for Child Emergency Care Capabilities HOSPITALS RECOGNIZED FOR CHILD EMERGENCY CARE CAPABILITIES Since 1998, over 100 hospitals within Illinois (including three hospitals in Indiana) have received recognition by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program for having the essential resources and capabilities in place to meet the emergency and critical care needs of seriously ill and injured children. This program recognizes hospitals that enhance their emergency departments and pediatric departments to meet the unique needs of pediatric patients. Children are not small adults. To provide the appropriate care for children requires special training, equipment and supplies. They cannot be cared for in emergency care systems initially developed for adult patients. Hospitals can apply for one of three levels of voluntary recognition. Facilities that have a pediatric intensive care unit and can provide specialty inpatient services for the pediatric patient can seek recognition as a Pediatric Critical Care Center (PCCC). Hospitals that can provide comprehensive emergency services and meet pediatric emergency care requirements are recognized as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). The Standby Emergency Department for Pediatrics (SEDP) recognition is for hospitals that can provide stabilization measures and have transfer agreements in place when more definitive care is needed. Note that those centers applying for the PCCC level must have attained EDAP status. Hospitals seeking one of these voluntary designations receive a site visit by the EMSC program staff to verify that the emergency department and pediatric department are capable of meeting the following key pediatric care standards based on the level being applied for: • Professionals specially trained in pediatric emergency and critical care; • Adequate staffing and provisions for pediatric consultation and backup; • Availability of essential pediatric equipment, supplies and medication; • Protocols for the treatment of critically ill and injured children, and protocols to assist in the transfer process; • Conduction of pediatric quality improvement activities. • Elective Catalog 2019-2020
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE ROCKFORD ELECTIVE CATALOG 2019-2020 Dr. Connie Vitali Assistant Dean Office of Medical Education & Evaluation 3/21/19 1 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE ROCKFORD The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford was created by action of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees in May 1971 as part of the expansion of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. The Rockford program combines the appeal of a small school atmosphere with the strength of one of the nation's largest and most respected medical schools. The Rockford program is strongly community-based; most of the clinical faculty are physicians who practice in the community. Teaching occurs almost exclusively in community hospitals, doctor’s offices and community-based clinics. The Rockford faculty form a close-knit cadre of practitioners who are intimately interested in the education of students, the advancement of the College of Medicine, and the well-being of the local community and its surrounding rural counties. Faculty members actively seek to include students in their activities and to share with students their concern for social and health care issues. These efforts provide a stimulating, collegial learning environment in which intellectual, professional and personal growth are nurtured. The faculty and administration enjoy working closely with students and offer personal guidance and assistance to help students learn the art and science of medicine. Begun in 1993, the Rural Medical Education Program (RMED) recruits and trains family physicians for underserved areas of rural Illinois. M1 and M2 RMED students engage in supplemental educational activities that focus on the foundations of rural family and community medicine while participating in the regular basic science curriculum.
