FILM REVIEW If Beale Street Could Talk and The Yellow Ticket If Beale Street Could Talk has been nominated for three Golden Globe awards – for best film, best screenplay and best supporting actress (for King). The running time for If Beale Street Could Talk is one hour and fifty-nine minutes. Filmed on location in New York City, the film is being released theatrically on December 25, 2018. (This release date makes the film eligible for consideration for the 90th Academy Awards on March 4th, 2019.)

Kiki Lange and Stephan James in If Beale Street Could Talk. By Tony Wohlfarth

If Beale Street Could Talk If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of a young woman in New York City, who desperately tries to prove her fiancé innocent of rape. The director, Barry Jenkins, is best known for directing Moonlight in 2016. Moonlight won the Best Film Oscar at the 2017 Academy Awards. The script is written by Jenkins and is based on the book Beale Street by James Baldwin. Baldwin died in 1987, and this film is another homage to the author (like Raoul Peck’s 2015 documentary I Am Not Your Negro). Reportedly, Jenkins worked with the James Baldwin Estate to develop the script. (The Baldwin Archives were opened to researchers in 2017.) If Beale Street Could Talk is set in 1970’s Harlem. Beale Street is best known as an iconic street in downtown Memphis where tourists flock to hear jazz music. Jenkins uses it as a metaphor for all the streets in American cities which are at the heart and soul of music culture e.g. Bourbon Street in A scene from the 1918 silent film The Yellow Ticket.
