Thomas Paine, the author of Common Sense and an ardent supporter of the American cause for independence, was born in Thetford, England, the son of a corset maker. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1774 and earned a living there as a free-lance journalist. Just before and during the Revolutionary War, Paine wrote a number of political pamphlets. Common Sense, published in January 1776, ‘urged an immediate declaration of independence.’ Paine explained in it his belief that ‘the colonies must fall away eventually; a continent can not remain tied to an island.’1 Examples of his writings are preserved in the imprint collection of the American Antiquarian Society.2 Once thought to be the work of Rembrandt Peale (1788-1860), this small painting is now believed to be an anonymous copy, after an image of Paine by the English portraitist George Romney (National Portrait Gallery, London). Romney’s composition was copied by several American artists, including Thomas Sully (1783-1872) and John Wesley Jarvis (1780-1840). Romney’s painting was engraved in 1793 and was often copied for inclusion in periodicals and books.3 Any of these prints could have served as the inspiration for this small portrait. 1 Rodger D. It explores a number of trajectories embarked upon by Boydell and his artists in their collective attempt to promote an English aesthetic. It broadly argues that the Shakespeare Gallery offered an antidote to a variety of perceived problems which had emerged at the Royal Academy over the previous twenty years, defining itself against Academic theory and practice. Identifying and examining the cluster of spatial, ideological and aesthetic concerns which characterised the Shakespeare Gallery, my research suggests that the Gallery promoted a vision for a national art form which corresponded to contemporary senses of English cultural and political identity, and takes issue with current art-historical perceptions about the 'failure' of Boydell's scheme. The introduction maps out some of the existing scholarship in this area and exposes the gaps which art historians have previously left in our understanding of the Shakespeare Gallery.

    William Cowper and George Romney: Public and Private Men Joan Addison It was at Eartham, William Hayley’s Sussex home, in August 1792, that William Cowper met the artist George Romney. In the previous May, Hayley, benefactor of artists and admirer of Cowper, had made his first visit to the poet at Weston. During his visit, he had written to his old friend Romney, suggesting such a meeting. His intention, he wrote in his Life of George Romney, was ‘to enliven [him] with a prospect of sharing with me the intellectual banquet of Cowper’s conversation by meeting him at Eartham’. When the meeting did take place, Hayley’s prediction that the two men would enjoy each other’s company proved correct. ‘Equally quick, and tender, in their feelings’, Hayley wrote, ‘they were peculiarly formed to relish the different but congenial talents, that rendered each an object of affectionate admiration’1. The pleasure that the poet and the painter shared in each other’s company was to result in the production of two notable creations, the portrait Romney made of Cowper during the visit to Eartham, and Cowper’s subsequent sonnet, written to Romney in appreciation of his work. ‘Romney,’ Hayley wrote, was ‘eager to execute a portrait of a person so remarkable’, and worked quickly in crayons to produce it.2 An intimate study of Cowper in informal garb, it is now in the National Portrait Gallery. The portrait, twenty-two and a half by eighteen inches, shows the upper part of Cowper’s body, against a brown background.

    George Romney (Dalton 1734 - Kendal 1802) Portrait of a Gentleman, Half-Length, Wearing a Dark Coat and White Stock oil on canvas 76.2 x 63.5 cm (30 x 25 in) Throughout the second half of the eighteenth century, George Romney was one of the most sought-after portraitists in Britain, though his portraits were not quite as dear as those by Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough he was nevertheless recognised as their only rival. In fact, as he was more inclined to Neoclassicism than many of his British contemporaries, at the height of his career Romney was the most fashionable portraitist in British society, with his sitters always appearing elegant and beautiful. In Portrait of a Gentleman, Half-Length, Wearing a Dark Coat and White Stock one can see why Romney’s services were so in demand. The gentleman sits, half turned towards the viewer, meeting our gaze calmly and confidently. His face is idealised, soft and unblemished, with his hair brushed back from his forehead, as was the fashion. His clothing is simple and fashionable and tells the viewer that we are looking at a tasteful, elegant and refined individual. By using such a dark, stark background, Romney focuses our attention onto his subject. In 1760 he exhibited the first painting to commemoratethe death of General James Wolfe, who had died the previous year during the battle for Quebec. It wasalso the first history painting – if we understand by this term the dramatic depiction of a heroic action – to dare to depictits subject in modern dress. Topographical views, whether they be of Britain or worldwide, have remained an abiding passion. Guy left Sotheby’s in early 2004 and has worked as a dealer since then, first based at home, and now in his new gallery on Mason’s Yard, St James’s, shared with the Old Master and European Drawings dealer Stephen Ongpin. He advises clients and museums on their collections, buys and sells on their behalf and can provide insurance valuations. Guy also vets a number of art fairs and is Chairman of the Vetting Committee for the Works on Paper Fair. Our first portrait and figure drawing catalogue, and exhibition, was in 2009 and this is our second. Portraits on paper were cheaper and quicker to produce than oils and the market for them expanded rapidly from the 1760s onwards. Pastels, often on a large scale, were particularly popular as their ‘wall power’ was close to that of an oil. Gardner, Hoare of Bath, Cotes and John Russell were the most successful pastellists of the time and all worked on a large scale. Hugh Douglas Hamilton and John Raphael Smith tended to specialise in smaller, often oval, portraits in pastel and it is little known that Lawrence started his career as a pastellist.

    THE FRICK COLLECTION A GUIDE TO WORKS OF ART ON EXHIBITION FRICK MADISON 1 Introduction During the renovation of The Frick Collection’s historic buildings at 1 East 70th Street, the museum’s home is just five blocks away in the structure designed by Marcel Breuer for the Whitney Museum of American Art. For the first time in almost a century, highlights from the collection are displayed outside the domestic setting of the Frick’s Gilded Age mansion. In this temporary location, which we are calling Frick Madison, the rich and varied holdings of the Frick are displayed according to geographic and chronological divisions. Some rooms cut across these boundaries to address the inter- connected nature of artistic production.
