If 2020 was the summer where everyone stayed home, 2021 will be the one where people can’t wait to get back out. With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, what are country radio’s programmers seeing as the singles for this season? “I think three are shaping up to be summer soundtracks with Luke Bryan’s ‘Waves’ front and center,” says Audacy Country Format Captain Tim Roberts. “It’s a super-chill track that captures summer and fun beautifully.” Also on Roberts’ summer fun list: Brian Kelley’s “Beach Cowboy,” “which I think is where a lot of brains drift toward daydreaming about summer beach fun,” and Old Dominion’s new “I Was on a Boat That Day.” (Continued on page 4) COUNTRY INSIDER TOP 5: WGAR’s “Wazz & Carletta” Look Back On Morning Show Pairing Ahead Of First Anniversary. Chapter 9 Reading Myself and Worlds: Coping Strategies in the Face of Cumulative Trauma Danielle Schaub 1 Introduction When starting in the years during which the self takes shape, childhood trau- ma leaves its scars on the sites of formation in the child’s developmental trajec- tory. In my case, the continuous geographical and linguistic disruptions caused by my father’s peripatetic working life foregrounded language as a site of traumatisation and insecurity in early years. Such insecurity only signals one trauma this body experienced repeatedly. The various traumatic experiences that inform me include cumulative trauma resulting from parental symbiosis underplaying a child’s existence; unprepared-for displacement and translation of identity; abandonment in a convent at the age of three; untimely death of a parent believed healthy without post-factum psychological or emotional sup- port; death of an underage sibling. I thought I had managed to bounce back after the debilitating experiences, proving capable of resilience. To some ex- tent I had; otherwise I would not have functioned, but since the experiences haunted me with a nagging, unsettling feeling for years, I found myself pon- dering over my reactions, behaviours, responses to specific stressful situations. With time and much ink, as Boris Cyrulnik notes, I have come to terms with the past and perceive what once felt life threatening as less devastating.1 With creative pieces involving the textual and the visual in combination or on their own, the chapter illustrates and theorises the process undertaken to cope with traumas as well as the understanding of patterns adopted to disconnect from the traumatic sources.

He anchors one of TV’s top shows, headlines concert dates, has a No. 1 album, and is now the 2017 Country radio airplay leader. CShelton’s 2017 airplay totals propel him to both the top Overall Performer and Top Male spots, driven by a pair of songs – “A Guy With A Girl” and “Every Time I Hear That Song” – that spent three weeks at No. 1. A third single – “I’ll Name The Dogs” – was in the Top 5 as 2017 came to a close. Adding to Shelton’s totals were four cuts from his new album Texoma Shore that charted the week of its release, though he would have topped airplay even without the points generated by those cuts. THEYEAR Florida Georgia Line’s trio of 2017 hits extend Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s dominance in INMUSIC the Duo/Group Performer category to fi ve years. They’re also the only non-solo male artist to make this year’s Top 10 Overall airplay performers. The Blake Shelton meteoric rise of Maren Morris continued in 2017. Airplay from “80s Mercedes” and “I Could Use A Love Song” vaulted her to the most-heard female artist of the year. Adding to her Country radio presence this year was a featured performance on the No. 1 single “Craving You” with Thomas Rhett. (Airplay points for that song are not included in Morris’ totals.) This year’s Top New Artist title goes to Luke Combs.
