MESA's 48th Annual Meeting

WashingtonWashington DCDC preliminary program November 22-25 very three years, MESA heads to our nation’s capital to hold its annual scholarly gathering. This year we are at MESA’s familiar E home, the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, located in a splendid residential area with lots of restaurants and shops. The Woodley Park/Zoo-Adams Morgan stop on the Metro red line is conveniently located within steps of the MWP’s front door. We gather in Washington to share research, nuture old friendships and, yes, to commiserate. A program of 270+ sessions, squeezed into 12 panel time slots, begins on Saturday, November 22 at 5:30pm and ends on Tuesday, November 25 at 3:30pm. The program is enormous by MESA standards and is varied. MESA’s Committee for Under- graduate Middle East Studies is organizing an undergraduate research workshop to take place on Saturday, November 22. A poster session of the participants’ work will be held in the afternoon just before panels begin and is open to attendees. A just-added pre-program session scheduled for Saturday, November 22 from 3:30-5:30pm will focus Jake McGuire on academic freedom, free speech, and faculty governance, with the recent situation of Dr. Steven Salaita and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign being the impetus. What does it all mean for Middle East studies scholars? On Sunday, November 23 from 2-4pm there will be a Presidential Forum on the Boycott, Divestment & Sanction movement. Following this past summer’s violence in Gaza, some scholars have debated whether and how to respond on both an individual and a collective basis. Calls to support the BDS movement have grown. At this special session, conference attendees will have an opportunity to learn about and discuss the issues surrounding BDS in a moderated, open forum. The program will feature current events sessions on ISIS in Iraq and Syria and the violence in Gaza, as well as a session that looks at policy relevance and the public role of academics. Things designed with students and/or junior colleagues in mind include a skill-building workshop on turning dissertations into books and one that will address the issue of how to transform scholar speak into language that works in a public setting. Roundtables promote informed discussion and debate concerning the current state of scholarship in particular fields, work currently in progress or the particular problems involved in the employment of new approaches, new models, etc. The roundtable format lends itself to open discussion in an atmosphere where participants provide their points of view and engage the audience in active discussion. Participants do not prepare papers and do not lecture to the audience. Seating is restricted to 25-30 maximum.

The interdisciplinary graduate group in the Study of Religion at UC Davis leads students through a rigorous program of study culminating in the Ph.D. in the Study of Religion. With thirty faculty, students receive classical training in the literatures of particular religious traditions while being encouraged to understand these traditions at the intersection of contemporary thematic and regional phenomena. Students have the opportunity to focus on a primary & secondary regional specialization from: American religious cultures, Mediterranean religions, and Asian religions. They also shape their scholarship through intensive engagement in a thematic specialization. This curriculum provides students with the breadth and depth necessary to produce exciting, innovative scholarship at forefront of the field of religious studies. Admitted students are offered generous multi-year funding packages. The Ph.D. program at UC Davis prepares students for careers in academia as well as in the government and the private sector. Dr. Steven Salaita was to take up a tenured appointment in the American Indian Studies program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Two weeks before classes began, as he prepared to move his family to Illinois, Dr. Salaita’s position was retracted over concern about remarks he made on Twitter about Israel’s policies in Gaza. Members of this panel will discuss issues of freedom of speech, academic freedom, university governance, civil discourse, and the potential repercussions for faculty in Middle East studies.

Metro Exit hotel and walk about a block down Woodley Road to Connecticut Avenue. Turn right and walk a short distance to the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro Station. Take the RED LINE rail toward Silver Spring and get off at the Farragut North Metro Station (2nd stop). Exit the station using Connecticut Ave & L St NW and walk approximately 2 blocks east on L St. to 16th St and arrive at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center at 1100 16th St NW.

Taxi Taxis are available at the hotel and can be flagged in front of the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center. Fares are approximately $10 one-way.

Walking Approximately 2 miles: Exit hotel and turn right on Woodley Road to Connecticut Ave. Turn right on Connecticut Ave. Stay on Connecticut Ave through Dupont Circle until you get to L Street. Turn left on L Street and walk approximately .2 miles to 16th St. Turn left on 16th St. to address.

Bus For those who need a little extra assistance, there will be limited bus service to the Cultural Center. The bus will depart at 7:00 p.m. from the hotel's 24th St. entrance (located between Woodley Market and Harry's Pub).

The 2014 Khayrallah Lebanese Diaspora Studies Prize

The Moise Khayrallah Prize recognizes excellence in scholarly studies from any discipline focusing on Lebanese migration and diasporas. Two awards are given annually. The first prize, in the amount of $1000, is awarded to an established scholar. The second prize, in the amount of $500, is awarded to a graduate student. The Khayrallah Center is pleased to announce the 2014 Khayrallah Prize winners:

• Professor Wendy Pearlman (Northwestern University), for her article, “Competing for Lebanon’s Diaspora: Transnationalism and Domestic Struggles in a Weak State.” The article appeared in International Migration Review (Spring 2014).
