The homegrown industry will face severe problems for hiking tax on bidi while the cigarette companies will take extra benefits if the tax on bidi and advanced tax on the industry increase

Scores of bidi workers and their leaders on Tuesday placed six-point demands, including withdrawal of extra tax and advanced income tax on bidi, for running their trade and production without any obstacle.

They held a press briefing to announce their demands at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital, said a press release.

Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation President M K Bangali placed the demands in a written speech, where he claimed scores of employees, including widow, paralyzed and illiterate men, will lose their jobs if the present tax and advanced income tax from the current fiscal year continue.

The homegrown industry will face severe problems for hiking tax on bidi while the cigarette companies will take extra benefits if the tax on bidi and advanced tax on the industry increase, he added.

He also urged the authorities to ensure the opportunity of six working days every week.

Tobacco cultivators, traders want extra tax withdrawn

They also demanded that the bidi industry be declared a „cottage industry‟ to save under- privileged people in North Bengal, mainly in Rangpur, Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts

Hundreds of tobacco cultivators and traders on Monday sought a „Tobacco Farmers Safety Law‟ and withdrawal of the extra tax on bidi, to be made effective from the current 2020-21 fiscal year.

They also demanded that the bidi industry be declared a „cottage industry‟ to save under- privileged people in North Bengal, mainly in Rangpur, Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts, according to a press release.

The organizers placed a six-point demand at a press briefing at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday morning.

Masum Ali Fakir, General Secretary of the Tobacco Cultivators and Traders Association, said in his written remarks, “A vested quarter has intentionally increased the tax on bidi to destroy the livelihoods of several lakh people who have no alternative means of choosing another profession in North Bengal region of the country.”

" If the government does not withdraw the extra tax on bidi, a severe scarcity of food will arise in the Rangpur region."

The tax on bidi was increased in order to give extra facilities to foreign cigarette companies, he stated.

Workers place 5-point demand to save bidi industry

Following the hiking tax on bidi, maximum owners and producers have closed their factories, snatching the livelihoods of scores of ultra-poor bidi workers and small traders

The bidi leaders and workers on Sunday placed their demands, including withdrawal of recently hiking of 4% tax on each packet of bidi and the formation of Bidi Industry Safety Law.

The other demands are to stop the distribution of duplicated bidi in the market, increase the tax on low and medium level quality-based cigarettes and stimulate the financial assistance to the bidi cultivators and traders, said a press release.

The demands were placed before the media through a human chain under the banner of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation (BBSF) in front of the National Press Club on the day.

A delegation of the BBSF also submitted a memorandum with the demands to the Prime Minister through the authorities concerned.

The speakers claimed that a vested quarter has increased 4% tax in each packet from the beginning of the current fiscal year while they hiked only 2% in each packet of low and medium level cigarettes that gave ample reason to suspect a conspiracy against the bidi industry.

A good number of bidi customers have started to consume cigarettes after hiking the price of bidi from the current fiscal year 2020-21 that may occupy the bidi market by the cigarette and lead to damage to the bidi industry, they continued. Following the hiking tax on bidi, maximum owners and producers have closed their factories, snatching the livelihoods of scores of ultra-poor bidi workers and small traders, they said.

They requested the Prime Minister to save the bidi industry by taking necessary initiatives to save the lives of workers and traders amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hundreds of bidi workers on Sunday sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's intervention to cut tax on bidi, a type of low priced cigarette, while forming a human chain in Tangail.

They urged the government to reduce the taxes on bidi, including recently imposed 4% tax for each packet, from the current fiscal (FY2020-21) so that they can survive with their jobs.

Under the banner name, 'Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation', the workers came up with the call in the demonstration held in front of Tangail Press Club.

Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation‟s Central President MK Rahman, General Secretary Abdur Rahman, Tangail unit President Md Lutfur Rahman, district General Secretary Md Jasim Uddin, and Organizing Secretary Md Aslam Mia, among others, were present, in the program. The workers and leaders also sent a memorandum to the prime minister through the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district.

The bidi sector leaders demanded stimulus and financial assistance for the sector workers and traders survival in the coronavirus pandemic crisis.

The speakers also requested the authorities concerned to fix the price of each packet low quality cigarette at Tk100 while each packet of bidi Tk10 only and to take initiative for banning duplicate bidi.

Following the recent tax increase on bidi, majority owners and producers closed their factories, and were leading ultra-poor life now, speakers said.
