CASE STUDY

Rachel Cocking HEAD COACH Christchurch Tennis Club, linking with local primary and secondary schools in Dorset

Situation: Currently delivering After School Tennis Clubs, Curriculum Coaching, Lunchtime Sessions, Talent ID, Teacher Training as well as offering an affordable exit route to the club for coaching, free play and membership.

What has been the impact on the pupils and staff at your school? Children experience a professional delivery and therefore their first experience of tennis is a hugely positive one. Teachers gain confidence and are empowered to continue offering tennis to their classes once our course of sessions has finished. We’ve seen more teachers start to play tennis along with parents, they join the club, have group coaching or individual lessons, even adults who have never played before are keen to try. I’ve seen children choose to play tennis in their free time, breaks, lunchtimes and after school, they just want to have a racket in their hand!

What is your experience of British Tennis’ schools programme so far? As a LTA Schools Tennis Tutor I get to see first hand what a difference a short course with a pro tennis coach can make to teachers delivery in their schools. The free equipment bag and DVDs make teaching tennis simple and fun.

What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? As a Tennis Coach working with schools, it would be great to know more about how to help teachers further in delivering tennis. I’d love to see every school with tennis nets up, rackets and a bucket of balls out each lunchtime letting children just have access to playing the game. I’d like to see children and adults of all ages and abilities choose to play tennis regularly and enjoy it.

The vast majority of British Tennis’ schools programme is about putting rackets into the hands of young people and introducing ALEX SLABINSKY them to our sport in a fun, inclusive and accessible way. But we are also very interested in the impact tennis JESSICA WEEKS can have on the lives of young people more widely: for example, how tennis can positively impact their self- confidence, academic performance or behaviour. Beyond The Baseline is a free, secondary schools NAOMI CAVADAY programme that uses tennis and inspirational tennis mentors to nurture pupils’ aspirations and put them on the path to achieving them. Report, November 2016, Sport Industry Research Centre In 2016 we piloted the School of Tennis programme in 21 schools across the UK and commissioned the Sport Industry Research Centre (Sheffield Hallam University) to conduct an evaluation of the pilot programme. The findings indicated that the programme had been very successful, with 94% of stakeholders stating that there had been a significant impact and radical overhaul of tennis delivery within their school since the start of the programme. Additionally, qualitative feedback indicated that the programme was helping to put tennis back on the map in schools by breaking down any barriers and misconceptions regarding the sport, increasing the confidence and competence of both participants and deliverers, whilst also making tennis an attractive sporting option for schools. Based on the research findings we have been able to refine and scale up the programme - we will be supporting around 85 secondary schools in 2018.
