This manuscript presents an overview of observed geotechnical aspects of this earthquake as well as some of the completed and on-going research investigations. A unique aspect, which is particularly emphasized, is the severity and spatial extent of liquefaction occurring in native soils. Overall, both the spatial extent and severity of liquefaction in the city was greater than in the preceding 4th September 2010 Darfield earthquake, including numerous areas that liquefied in both events. Liquefaction and lateral spreading, variable over both large and short spatial scales, affected commercial structures in the Central Business District (CBD) in a variety of ways including: total and differential settlements and tilting; punching settlements of structures with shallow foundations; differential movements of components of complex structures; and interaction of adjacent structures via common foundation soils. Liquefaction was most severe in residential areas located to the east of the CBD as a result of stronger ground shaking due to the proximity to the causative fault, a high water table approximately 1m from the surface, and soils with composition and states of high susceptibility and potential for liquefaction.

With these earthquakes, many changes have followed. 24-7 YouthWork decided to survey intermediate and high school students on what they want in the rebuilding of their city. Thanks to the Todd Foundation, and in conjunction with The Collaborative Trust, an online survey was designed to find out what is important to our youth and to give them a voice. We were interested in hearing about their thoughts and what they want for this city as a young person.

    Q&A – Christchurch housing announcement What is being announced today? The Government is investing $46.3 million to build 145 social houses throughout Greater Christchurch. This is made up of: 82 houses under construction including 15 houses delivered through the Housing New Zealand-Department of Corrections partnership at Rolleston Prison, and 35 contracted or under negotiation 28 new homes that are in the planning pipeline. The new homes will be a mixture of smaller homes and homes for larger families – exactly the kinds of social housing needed to meet current and future demand for social housing. In the last financial year, and at a cost of $52 million, Housing New Zealand completed: 157 new homes, including five that were refurbished at Rolleston Prison Six new Community Group Housing homes across three Christchurch suburbs and Kaiapoi, to the city’s north. These properties are managed by specialist providers. This brings the total new social housing being built between 2016/16 and 2017/18 to 308 homes. What is this costing? The total investment across the two years is $98.3 million. This level of new build activity across Greater Christchurch will cost an estimated $47 million. This includes the $4.5 million on houses delivered from Rolleston Prison. How much will each project cost, and when will the homes be completed? Total no.     ANCESTRY OF SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB AT PAPERS PAST BY FLAGON PARK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SECOND ADDINGTON CRICKET CLUB 1880-1895 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John HOPPER, the president of the Hagley Oakleaf a.k.a. Christchurch Cricket Club, resigned from that position at a special meeting held a week after the 1879 AGM. In 1880 he called a meeting to form the second Addington Cricket Club and moved the motion at that meeting that the club be formed. The motion was seconded by William Thomas BURLEY who about a month before had been re-elected as Secretary at the 1880 AGM of the Christchurch Cricket Club! Other people at the meeting to form Addington had also attended the Christchurch AGM. By 1880 the Sydenham Borough acquired from the government the relatively small market reserve of 5 acres on the margin of the borough, named as the Sydenham Recreation Reserve by the borough and these days known as Addington Park. The reserve was previously the site of the city abbatoir having been set aside for that purpose in 1869. The second Addington Cricket Club formed ready for the 1880-81 season gained the use of the reserve but wanted a more suitable ground, and by the following season had gained a ground from the Domain Board of the City Council at the Lower Ground in Hagley Park roughly opposite St Asaph Street, which we know these days as Hospital Corner. Due to the heavy expense of renting, establishing and then maintaining the ground over several seasons, Addington eventually took up an offer to make its home ground at Hagley Oval.

The information has been gathered using the best available technical data held by a number of agencies and organisations. It does not identify or assess land use options or the feasibility of land uses. The information in this document is not, and should not be interpreted as, a pre-determination, recommendation or decision about future use. No decisions regarding the future use of this land have been made. Overview of Avondale residential red zone (Area 8): Area 8 (including 8A and 8B) is approximately 51 hectares in area and is located east and south of the Ōtākaro/Avon River. The area is bounded by Avonside Drive to the west, Hulverstone Drive to the north. Avondale Road and Mervyn Drive, as well as existing residential areas, define Area 8 to the east and south. Area 8 is susceptible to a number of natural hazards, which can potentially occur either in isolation or collectively leading to a number of adverse cascading effects. The risk from many of these hazards will increase over time due to the accelerating effects of sea level rise. Land contamination may be an issue for much of the site.
