It's one of my favorite kinds of music. Jon Wurster is one of my favorite drummers. I was really happy to get a chance to play with Jason, and his songs are great. It was just a super project for me.” — REM’s Mike Mills Split Single, the collective project of Chicago-based musician Jason Narducy (Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Verbow) — this time featuring REM’s Mike Mills on bass and Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Bob Mould, The Mountain Goats) on drums — presents a new single/video, “Satellite,” and also announces both summer headline tour dates and fall tour dates supporting Bob Mould. The closing track from Split Single’s forthcoming album, Amplificado (out June 25th on Inside Outside Records), “Satellite” follows previous singles, “95 Percent,” a “full-speed-ahead guitar banger” (Stereogum), and the “defiantly triumphant” (The A.V. Club) “(Nothing You Can Do To) End This Love.” It features Wilco’s Mikael Jorgensen on Wurlitzer. “‘Satellite’ was the first song I wrote for this album,” says Narducy. “The lyrics are about searching for connection which is something many of us have felt deeply during the pandemic. I wanted the video to capture that feeling of isolation and then the jubilation once a connection is made. This video came together very quickly. I didn’t know the young crew that was referred to me but they were fantastic. Jimmy Chung plays the street salesperson. We met when he was cast of ‘Verböten’ the musical. I liked him right away. He has an infectious positive energy. It was great to work with Jimmy again.” Watch Split Single’s Video for “Satellite” (“Satellite” Video Still) Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Amplificado is a tight collection of rock songs dealing with the anxiety of living through a chaotic and cruel Republican majority rule and under the limitations of a worldwide pandemic. The new album comes nearly five years aer the release of Split Single’s 2016 album, Metal Frames, “a powerhouse pop record that prides itself on tenacious vocals and resolute rhythm guitar” (Stereogum) recorded with Wurster and Wilco’s John Sitrratt, and last year’s acclaimed, Jeff Award and ATCA New Work-nominated production of Verböten, a musical inspired by Narducy’s now-seminal childhood punk rock band of the same name. “Love this record,” says Mills. “So much fun playing and singing with Jason and Jon. So, I packed the Malibu with I-Roy and U-Roy, stomached $4 gas and my friend Bose and I left from Connecticut in a rainstorm, both of us in fleece. Night one we spent at a Ramada in Fredericksburg, never made it to the battlefield or historic downtown, but instead drove down the divided highway to Allman’s BBQ. I’m wary of food blogs, but the culinary scribes were dead-on: best ribs I have ever had outside Texas, enviable pulled pork and slaw, notable sauce in the squirt bottle — all in an old corner diner with spinning stools. What a foundation, not only for the evening, which consisted of ice cold tap Yuengling and inebriated dancing to Def Leppard in the Ramada lounge, but for the show to come. Just a stateline south, yes, Polvo, the seminal math rock quartet, reunited at their Ground Zero, the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro. In the morning, it was only better, the slow slalom down Route 40 country roads leaving trails of red clay and another barbecue platter at Short Sugar’s in Danville, Virginia.

Using the concept of “scene” as a frame, this ethnographic project engages with participants in a contemporary music scene shaped by a tradition of experimentation that embraces discontinuity and celebrates change. The first words that came into my head were ‘She loves her and he loves him.’ So it ended up being an unconventional love song. I’m expressing support and joy for diverse couples everywhere, including but not only my friends that appear in the video.” The charming accompanying video was directed by Jamie Fleischel.

I just want to be a really good role model, and golf is a great way to be an influential figure to young kids. There may even be some American non-profit labels for new artists, but they lay outside of my research. Merge is still putting out first-rate music - take the albums they've released by Destroyer, Caribou and Waxahatachee so far this the Indie Label That Got Big and Stayed Small 1st edition - but both Arcade Fire and Spoon have left the label. From nut clusters and caramels, to dozens of types of truffles and chocolate-dipped strawberries, this shop offers a generous array of options.
