PUBLICATION OF ZEN •CENTER Volume Vilt Nos. 1-2 Fall 1969 This fellow was a son of Nobusuke Goemon Ichenose of Takahama, the province of Wakasa. His nature was stupid and tough. When he was young, none of his relatives liked him. When he was twelve years old, he was or<Llined as a monk by Ekkei, Abbot of Myo-shin Monastery. Afterwards, he studied literature under Shungai of Kennin Monastery for three years, and gained nothing. Then he went to Mii-dera and studied Tendai philosophy under Tai-ho for. a summer, and gained nothing. After this, he went to Bizen and studied Zen under the old teacher Gisan for one year, and attained nothing. He then went to the East, to Kamakura, and studied under the Zen master Ko-sen in the Engaku Monastery for six years, and added nothing to the aforesaid nothingness. He was in charge of a little temple, Butsu-nichi, one of the temples in Engaku Cathedral, for one year and from there he went to Tokyo to attend Kei-o College for one year and a half, making himself the worst student there; and forgot the nothingness that he had gained. Then he created for himself new delusions, and came to Ceylon in the spring of 1887; and now, under the Ceylon monk, he is studying the Pali Language and Hinayana Buddhism. Mountains Talking Lotus in the Flame Temple, Zen Center of Denver Winter 2002 Trust in Allah but Tie Your Donkey A morning talk given by Sensei during the April 1999 7-day sesshin There is a Sufi aphorism that goes, “Trust in Allah but tie your donkey”. I think that in sesshin we are pretty good in tying our donkey, that is, making effort and doing the hard work that needs to be done. I am always moved by how hard people work in sesshin to settle the mind against seemingly impossible odds. People are so often very courageous and energetic in their sesshin practice. But trusting ourselves seems to be much harder for many of us. I have struggled with self-doubt for my entire spiritual journey and am only now, as I approach sixty, beginning to trust myself. It occurred to me while reflecting on this that perhaps the reason that so many people - more than seventy percent - believe in a personal God conceived of as a very large man with a white beard who lives somewhere up in the sky and runs everything, is because it is too hard to trust one’s self, to trust in one’s own nature. It is easier to trust and rely on someone else whom I take to be smarter and more spiritual than myself. But the fact is that the truth is within us. Each of us is endowed with wisdom and compassion. We already have everything we need to be happy and live well. But it is so hard for so many of us to have faith and to trust ourselves. -

Join the Bright Cloud Zen practice groups* at Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church (WUUC) on October 5 for Fall Zazenkai A “mini-retreat” to honor what is falling away with the turning of the season and our lives. We will spend the day in silent seated and walking meditation, with a special focus on loved ones who have died, acknowledging relationships and circumstances that are changing, with no certainty of what is to come. Bring photos, mementos, poetry, messages for an altar of remembrance. The day will also offer the experience of sutra chanting, work practice, one-on-one interviews with a Zen teacher, and a dharma talk with reflective conversation. This event is suitable for beginners or experienced Zen practitioners. While full-time participation is preferred, part-time attendance is allowed. Beginners are encouraged to arrive in the morning for orientation and guidance in meditation. Chairs are provided; some cushions are available for floor sitting. You are welcome to bring your own cushions or meditation bench. There is no charge for this event. We will invite offerings (dana) to support ongoing costs of sangha supplies and materials. Please bring your own lunch. Light snacks, water and tea will be provided throughout the day. Contributions of baked goods, fruit, tea, etc., are also welcome. General schedule (doors open at 8:45 a.m.) 9:00 a.m. Opening chants, dedication of our day to those who have died. Mountains Talking Lotus in the Flame Temple, Zen Center of Denver Spring 2005 Open Heart, Open Mind, Open House by Danan Henry Roshi The Blue Cliff Record, Case 9: Joshu’s Four Gates A monk asked Joshu, “What is Joshu?” Joshu said, “East Gate, West Gate, North Gate, South Gate.” Where do you see Joshu here? What are you like? What is our temple like? Many of the Tang masters’ names were derived from the mountain they lived on. Joshu’s name was taken from the place where he was living, the town of Joshu. Like most ancient Chinese towns, the town of Joshu was enclosed within four walls, each with a gate. These gates were open to anyone who wanted to go in or out of the town. Men and women, young and old, those of high birth and low birth, officials and criminals, rich and poor, monks and nuns, strong and weak, smart and dull, dogs and cattle, fancy coaches and broken down wagons – all could pass through the gates. A monk asked Joshu, “What is Joshu?” This question has a bite to it. Engo, one of the compilers of the Blue Cliff Record, comments here, “Thorns in the mud.” Yes, watch out, danger beneath the surface. At nearly every shosan (Dharma exchange) I try to devise a trap like this. If Joshu had answered referring to himself, the monk could say, “I did not ask about you but about the town.” If Joshu’s answer referred to the town, the monk could say, “I was asking about you.” If we fall into the slightest distinction, we miss the essence, the ground, the wide, unfathomable mystery and loose our inherent vastness and freedom. -
January Zazenkai
January Zazenkai Date: 01/30/2016 - starts at 7:45 AM Upaya Sangha of Tucson is holding a half-day retreat, also called a zazenkai, at Stone Curves (address below) on January 30. This event will start at 7:45 am and run until, roughly, Noon. What is Zazenkai? Zazenkai can be translated as “to come together for meditation.” It offers a less intensive opportunity to deepen practice than, say, a retreat or sesshin. It will consist of alternating sessions of chanting, zazen (seated meditation), and kinhin (walking meditation). Expect zazen sessions to be roughly 30 minutes. (An opportunity for “dokusan”, private interview, will be optionally available with our Sensei) Space constraints will limit participation to 15 individuals. To reserve a space, please acknowledge your wish to attend by filling out the following form: http://bit.ly/1PkyE2p Once the limit has been met, we will maintain a waiting list. If space opens up, we will notify individuals from that list. Plan to arrive promptly by 7:45 am. A brief orientation will precede the event. This will cover the necessary details to make the event go smoothly (minor logistics, outline timeline, information about dokusan, secret to enlightenment, etc.). What to bring? Plastic chairs will be available for use. If you wish to have a different setup for meditation (say, a zafu & zabuton), please bring your own from home. You may wish to bring a jacket, blanket, or scarf to help keep warm. We will be indoors for seated meditation, but outdoors for walking meditation.
