OVERVIEW FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It has been a pleasure transitioning from my former role as Vice-President of Res Artis to serve as the inaugural Executive Director over the past year and a half. I feel privileged to work with such a diverse membership, board and staff, and 2017 has proven another milestone year.

In July we launched the first Res Artis satellite office in Melbourne, thanks to the generous support of benefactors Michael Schwarz and David Clouston. The space is my office and includes an impressive project space to be used for residency-related projects. It is hoped this office will become home to an Cluster of Res Artis in the near future.

In October we launched our first regional hub through the establishment of the MENASA (, North , South ) Cluster in Tehran, Iran. After our hugely successful Res Artis Meeting in Tehran in 2016, Mr Ehsan Rasoulof of Kooshk Residency and Mohsen Gallery has offered his generous support towards our MENASA Cluster. We are humbled by Ehsan’s generosity and look forward to increasing our engagement in this . The MENASA Cluster enabled us to welcome new staff member, Maryam Baghari, who has already made a valuable contribution to our small team.

The Australian office and MENASA Cluster are the first steps towards Res Artis realising our Strategic Plan 2015 – 2020, and vision to become a global network that also engages at a deeper, regional level.

Res Artis held a conference in Copenhagen in partnership with Danish Art Workshops and Fabrikken for Kunst and Design. Titled Prepare for Production, this meeting welcomed 120 international participants to discuss the challenges and opportunities for residency operators to meet production needs in the rapidly expanding field of arts residencies. This 3 day conference was well-attended and received great feedback from our members.

To ensure diversity within the Res Artis Board to best serve our global membership, Res Artis welcomed 4 new Board Members in 2017. It was the first year we expanded our search beyond the field in order to meet our skill requirements. The appointments were: Freelance consultant and former founding Executive Director of IFACCA, Sarah Gardner (Australia) appointed to the role of Secretary; Raquel Cámara (Spain) founder of key industry publication Mapping Residencies; Luigi Galimberti (Italy) of the Tate Gallery in London and former director of Transnational Dialogues; and Vincent Liew (Singapore) an artist and photography educator with previous business and finance experience.

Res Artis exists because of our members. Together we make up an incredibly diverse and experienced think-tank that is the heart of our network. 2017 has seen the realisation of several steps towards the future direction and growth of Res Artis, and I look forward to achieving many more milestones with you.

Eliza Roberts Executive Director, Res Artis

Communication

A total of 124 new members joined our network last year contributing to our continuous growth over the past years. In 2017, our network comprised over 650 members in more than 70 countries. Our members are at the core of our network and we are proud of our strong and diverse membership. We thank our members for another year of hard work for the artist residency field!

We tried to keep up our communication efforts in 2017 as well. We sent out three Newsletters - all of them in English, Spanish, and French. A special thanks in this regard goes out to our

dedicated volunteer translators. 29,000 subscribers received our Newsletters. The newsletters - covered news about upcoming Res Artis events, opportunities for cooperation and mobility funding, and features about membership benefits and resources. Also our website as well as our social media channels registered an increase in visitors and followers.

354,752 creative persons visited and benefited from our website resources and our website was consulted 729,741 times, while registering 3,873,922 overall page views.

We experienced immense growth on our social media channels where Facebook registered a yearly increase of 2.7%, Twitter of over 32%, LinkedIn of over 18% and Instagram quintupled its follower base.

Customised Services for our Members In addition to our general promotion efforts, we put a strong focus on providing our members with solid guidance and feedback regarding their Res Artis membership. The online survey revealed that online visibility is one of the most important aspects for our members. As a service to our members, we carried out profile screenings for our entire membership base in order to provide our members’ profiles with an effective online positioning. For 89% of our members we saw possible improvements and gave individual advice on how to improve their Res Artis public profiles. Not only does a more complete and attractive page express professionality but several profile fields also translate into parameters for our search filter. Complete and detailed profiles

better position a page in our search engine and allow visitors to filter and find a - residency. Res Artis Node: We also reactivated our Members Only Facebook Group, the Res Artis Node, encouraging our members to join and become active in this unique discussion platform bringing together colleagues in the artist residency field from all over the world. In 2015, the Res Artis Node counted around 300 members. Group topics were ranging from conferences and calls in the field of artist residencies, over resources concerning cultural mobility to discussions on structures of different residency places such as the special needs for writers in residence and the use of a residency garden.

Res Artis Artist Residency Handbook We launched a new edition of the Res Artis Artist Residency Handbook. The handbook provides emerging artist residencies with useful information on things to consider when starting an artist residency, while at the same time offering inspiration for improvement for more established organisations. It contains a multitude of examples we received from the Res Artis community providing our members with real-life experiences and hands on material from the field. The handbook is not for sale but only available to Res Artis members.

17 2017 Overview and Financial Summary from the President

Dear Res Artis Community,

2017 has marked the transition to our 25th anniversary of Res Artis. An unforgettable meeting in Copenhagen with Danish Art Workshop and FABRIKKEN for Kunst and Design brought members together for an intimate dialogue on tooling residencies. One of my own interpretations of this inspiring meeting is that nothing ever replaces the actual staying in a

place and the touch with the tool.

- During 2017 we have reached a membership increase of 9%, bringing the total amount of members to 658 organisations world-wide. The growth of the field – with its multidisciplinary and ubiquitous forms – is a direct reflection of the need of arts and indeed arts residencies around the world. Residencies are not only a source of inspiration for artists, but also a means of communication and an act of encounter. And encounters are needed in this world now more than ever.

In regards to the finances, during the fiscal year of 2017 Res Artis produced a loss of – 5 700 €. The result is not satisfactory, but it does reflect the needed changes in our organisation: the execution of the Strategy 2020. The establishment of the Australian office in Melbourne and the position of the new Executive Director are expected to strengthen the global reach of Res Artis long-term. Together with the Middle East, North Africa and South Asian (MENASA) cluster in Tehran, we are on the right track to serve the field of residencies ‘glocally’.

The Res Artis summary Financial Report for 2017 can be viewed by our members here: http://www.resartis.org/en/member_area/res_artis_facts__figures/financial_reports/

It is important to notice that over 80% of the annual costs are allocated to the staff of the organisation. This means that every membership payment is needed and benefits the most important resource of our organisation: the talented persons running the organisation. We are more than lucky to have Birte, Eliza and Maryam taking care of our world-wide services. I do want to thank our generous benefactors, Michael Schwarz and David Clouston in Australia and Ehsan Rasoulof in Iran. During 2017 their in-kind support towards our regional clusters has been invaluable. It is great to meet private persons dedicated to cultural encounters who value art so much. We do need them in our world.

At the same time as bringing you an overview of the key events and finances for 2017, it is nearing the end of my term on the Board and I wish to thank you all for a wonderful eight years with Res Artis. What a unique world-wide team we have. I have been privileged to have been part of the strategic work, implementation of the new regional approach and organizational changes during these years. And more than anything it has been a great joy to work with you all, be part of the global team and learn from all of you. Thank you, dear friends and colleagues.

18

This year we celebrate our 25th anniversary with joy. Res Artis is the worldwide and largest network of residencies dedicated to professional, sustainable, transparent and diverse world encounters. I am more than happy to invite you all to my birth city Rovaniemi, the heart of Lapland in June to develop the field further together at our next Res Artis Meeting.

And the world is a bit more mobile again,

Leena Vuotovesi President, Res Artis
