Enchantress has played a very important role in every since 1913 as one of four Umpire Launches. In 1943 Henley Regatta was a truly royal affair with the attendance of Princess Elizabeth, who with Princess Margaret, enjoyed the spectacle of the racing from the comfort and splendour of Enchantress. The long straight Henley Reach stretching from Temple Island to Henley Bridge is the first feature of your river cruise. From there, the river’s progress from Henley is reassuringly dramatic with long stretches of steep woodland filling the narrow valley and sweeping down to the water. The scene from the river paints the history of the region; from country houses to pretty cottages; picture postcard villages to elegant towns – they all tell a story and have formed the heart of the tourist attraction from the Victorian era. An Afternoon Steeped in History and Intrigue Your afternoon will be spent in one of the most stunning stately homes in the country, but with a history including more intrigue, scandal and royalty than most of us could imagine… The story of Cliveden House is about 350 years of power, politics and parties. Since then it has twice been destroyed by fire, only to emerge, phoenix-like, more stunning than before. The house has played host to virtually every British monarch since George I and has been home to three Dukes, an Earl and Frederick Prince of Wales, who created a happy family home here until his death in 1751. During your personal tour we will share it all with you. Through to the most notorious of scandals, the Profumo Affair, which changed the course of British politics and started with a chance meeting at the beautiful Cliveden swimming pool, which is still in use today. Your afternoon will be completed with a quintessential Afternoon Tea, but one with a difference. In 2016, Cliveden is celebrating its 350 year anniversary and you are invited to enjoy their special Celebratory Afternoon Tea as the perfect conclusion to your very English, and Royal, visit to the English countryside.
