Dear Friends,

First, I’m happy to report that rehearsals for the B’nai Jacob Players’ production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee are going swimmingly! The rehearsals are an absolute joy - everyone is working really hard, but they’re filled with laughter. We can’t wait to share the laughter with all of you! It’s also amazing and beautiful to see how people linger after a grueling two hour rehearsal, at 8:30 PM on a Wednesday evening, and just want to continue talking and hanging out! The friendships and connections developed in the BJ Players team is what BJ Players shows are all about.

On a personal note: After a long placement process, I’ve decided to take the position as Cantor at Sutton Place Synagogue in Manhattan next year. I’m very excited for new opportunities, and I’m also so sad to leave B’nai Jacob and all the people that I love so much. Fortunately, Manhattan isn’t very far away!

With love, Malachi

Sundays

There are many wonderful ways to learn outside of the classroom. These recent photos show a few: Seventh graders learn the mitzvah of feeding the hungry by making lunches for Abraham’s Tent. Children in our lower school learn to make challah during a Shabbat workshop, while the older kids make their own Shabbat candlesticks with sand art. Music is always fun and engaging; and what’s better than getting to go outside on a warm winter morning to learn about Tu B’Shevat?

Guest Speakers Sunday, March 15 • 10am Debra Sachs M.A. “Hearing Loss: Listening and Communication Tools and Tips”

Do you have a hearing loss, or do you know someone who does? Are you ever frustrated in your efforts to relay or receive a spoken message in an acoustically challenging environment? 10.6% of Americans have hearing loss. No doubt there are members of CBJ who struggle with it. Member Debbie Sachs, an award-winning teacher of students with hearing loss, will lead an interactive program to learn about hearing loss and have the opportunity to listen as if you had one. We will consider the impact of hearing loss on individuals, particularly aging adults, and identify listening strategies and spoken language techniques to maximize communication.

Shabbat, March 28, after Kiddush Daniel Headrick, Ph.D. Climate Change: A New Perspective

CBJ member, scholar and author of the new book, “Humans Versus Nature: A Global Environmental History,” Headrick will speak with us about the state of our planet: almost all scientists, most political leaders (outside the United States), and much of the public, especially young people, agree that climate change is real, that it is caused by anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions, and that we must start doing something soon to reverse it. Yet the amount of emissions continues to grow. Headrick argues that two powerful forces – developmentalism and consumerism – stand in the way of meaningful action.
