In Memory of Lawrence R. Smock Lawrence R. Smock died Friday morning April 14, 2017 at Kaiser Permanente in Anaheim. His death was the result of a severe brain bleed caused by a bad fall and multiple strokes. He leaves his wife of 37 years, Jeannette Smock, daughters Krista Keogh, Kara Davies, their husbands, Dennis, Frank and grandchildren Lucy, Colin, Audrey and Caroline. Known to many as Larry, he grew up in Los Angeles California and resided in Downey, California for the past Rep. With their success at the VEX State Championships in January, Griffiths was awarded a spot to compete in this month’s VEX World Championships in Louisville, KY. With a vast amount of support from various facets including staff, parents and the community, GMS competed against the best robotics teams in the world during this competition. Competing in the Spirit Division, GMS’ Team 9078X went up against 80 teams and finished placing 28th. In total, Griffiths finished 6-4, but unfortunately was unable to make it to the elimination round. Fifteen middle school teams from California participated in the VEX World Championships as a whole. Assessing GMS’ ranking in regard to those that competed from California, Griffith’s Team 9078X finished fifth in the entire competition and third within the Spirit Division. “We are so proud of our amazing students and staff, Mr. Virak and Mrs. English, who coached and accompanied our students on the trip,” expressed GMS’ Principal Dr. Rani Bertsch.
