FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 18, 2011 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS PUDDLE OF MUDD FRIDAY, MARCH 9 Richmond, BC – After four albums, platinum-plus sales, sold-out crowds and more than a dozen radio hits, Puddle of Mudd has cemented its reputation and its repertoire in the rock ‘n’ roll world. It’s the proverbial force to be reckoned with, possessing the kind of track record that most bands would be proud to have had over an entire career. Puddle of Mudd was formed in Missouri in 1993 releasing an album the following year but it wasn’t until 2001 that they released their first major label album. Come Clean was responsible for breaking the band into the mainstream music scene and featured their hit singles “Control”, “Blurry”, “Drift & Die” and “She Hates Me” … the album has since gone Triple Platinum. Their next album, Life on Display was released in 2003 and featured the singles “Away From Me”, “Heel Over Head” and “Spin You Around” followed in 2007 with Famous which featured the title track along with “Merry Go Round” and “Psycho”. Just this past August, the band released RE:(DISC)OVERED which this time has the Mudd men putting down their pens in favour of recording eleven classic rock tracks by such artists as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Steve Miller Band, AC/DC and Elton John. Today’s line-up consists of front man Wes Scantlin, lead guitarist Paul Phillips, bassist Doug Ardito and new members, Dizzi Devereux on guitar and Shannon Boone on drums. Puddle of Mudd will be performing for one night only at the River Rock Casino Resort on March 9, 2012. tripleC 9(1): 62-76, 2011 ISSN 1726-670X http://www.triple-c.at Deconstructing Bentham’s Panopticon: The New Meta- phors of Surveillance in the Web 2.0 Environment Manuela Farinosi Department of Human Sciences - University of Udine, Italy [email protected] Abstract: This article reflects on the meaning of the words “control” and “privacy” in light of the intensive diffusion of user generated content on the web. It presents some results of an empirical research based on 145 essays written by Italian students. The data were analysed from a qualitative point of view to understand how young people frame the topic of control on the web 2.0. The attention is focused on the metaphors used to describe online platforms and on the social environments they mention when they speak about the impacts of online diffusion of personal content on offline life. The results show that the new control practices cannot be adequately described within the classical framework of vertical control. The traditional panoptic principle of observation has to a certain extent been transformed and the Panopticon itself is no more an effective metaphor to describe the control dynamics on the web 2.0. Cherry Chandler Graduate Faculty Representative Cynthia Baron Don McQuarie © 2010 Lloyd Isaac Vayo All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor “Silencio: The Spectral Voice and 9/11” intervenes in predominantly visual discourses of 9/11 to assert the essential nature of sound, particularly the recorded voices of the hijackers, to narratives of the event. The dissertation traces a personal journey through a selection of objects in an effort to seek a truth of the event. This truth challenges accepted narrativity, in which the U.S. is an innocent victim and the hijackers are pure evil, with extra-accepted narrativity, where the additional import of the hijacker’s voices expand and complicate existing accounts. In the first section, a trajectory is drawn from the visual to the aural, from the whole to the fragmentary, and from the professional to the amateur. The section starts with films focused on United Airlines Flight 93, The Flight That Fought Back, Flight 93, and United 93, continuing to a broader documentary about 9/11 and its context, National Geographic: Inside 9/11, and concluding with a look at two YouTube shorts portraying carjackings, “The Long Afternoon” and “Demon Ride.” Though the films and the documentary attempt to reattach the acousmatic hijacker voice to a visual referent as a means of stabilizing its meaning, that voice is not so easily fixed, and instead gains force with each iteration, exceeding the event and coming from the past to inhabit everyday scenarios like the carjackings.
