• About 5000 Borewells in Visnagar Taluka

• About 2000 failed!!!

• Cost of one Borewell = Rs. 15 Lakh

• Total cost of 2000 failed bore wells = Rs. 300 Crore

Need immediate Action : Ecorestoration of Taranga Hills Ecological indicators to address Climate change impacts

• Presence of Desert loving species in Eastern parts of Aravallis • Decreasing honeybee population (Honey, wax decreased) • Disturbed food web • Increasing aridity • Change in vegetation and species association • Decreasing broad leaved species • Shifting sand dunes to Eastern parts of Aravallis • Decreasing Water regime • Water channels affected • Increasing species in RET status Cont… Ecological indicators to address Climate change impacts

• Increasing invasive & alien species • Decreasing vegetation cover - affecting natural resources based support systems • Agriculture affected due to decreasing water regimes & decreasing numbers of pollinators • Pasture system affected • Decreasing NTFPs, related economy affected • Increased conflicts • Food crisis (Oil crops & food crisis in ) • Increased health problems – heavy chemicals in mother’s milk • Increased mosquito population (due to aridity) & increased cost of public health programmes Field Experiences: Pasture development projects/studies done/ going on: • Kachchh region • Kalpavalli, Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh • Singhadiya, Ajmer, Rajasthan • Aravallis of Sourthern Rajasthan, Aravallis of North Gujarat, Corridors • Wastelands of Gujarat (Food & Fodder Security) • Mangrove areas (Coastal region Pastures) Proposed Pasture development projects: • Lakhabaval, , Gujarat (@ Gauseva Aayog & Gauchar Vikas Board, Govt. of Gujarat, ) • Akala-Maliya, , Gujarat (@ DoLR, MoRD, Govt of ) Species distribution in different location in Aravallis of Gujarat

1. Fodder (69) 2. Other veterinary aspects (119) 3. Galactogauge plants 4. Plants for healthy baby animals 5. For snake & scorpion bites treatment 6. For mother animal during pregnancy

7. Other health problems (F&M, Aafro, etc.) Potential area for Pasture development

✓ Pasture lands (on records) ✓ Panchayat lands ✓ Common resources ✓ Revenue Wastelands ✓ Uncultivable Wastelands ✓ Lands of Gaushala, Panjarapole, Charity trusts, etc. ✓ Fallow lands ✓ Private land Role of Gaushala
