All the other photographs are drawn from the Forestry Commission’s own collection, and all the text figures are based on data provided by the respective authors. v INTRODUCTION By JAMES MACDONALD Deputy Director General During the year under review, there have been several changes in the Research staff. Mr. G. D. Kitchingman retired in October 1960 after 13 years’ service as Librarian at Alice Holt and was replaced by Mr. R. M. G. Semple. Dr. M. Crooke resigned in October 1960 on appointment as Lecturer in Forest Zoology in the University of Aberdeen, and in February 1961 Mr. J. S. Murray, Forest Pathologist, left for the same University in which he has become Senior Lecturer on Forest Botany. Dr. Crooke was replaced by Mr. D. Bevan, while the Path­ ology section has been placed temporarily in the charge of Dr. R. G. Pawsey. Mr. G. G. Stewart, one of the silvicultural research officers in Scotland, was transferred to field duties on promotion and his post in research was filled by Mr. S. A. Neustein, transferred from the South Conservancy in Scotland. Mr. K. D. Taylor, who was engaged on research on squirrels, resigned in November 1960. Mr. R. T. Bradley and Mr. R. E. F. Heslop joined the staff in October, the former to work in Mensuration and the latter on Working Plans. Mr. D. H. Stewart was appointed to the Statistics section as Experimental Officer. Visitors to Alice Holt numbered 300, rather fewer than in recent years. In addition to visitors from this country, they came from Australia, Belgium, Burma, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Finland, France, Ghana, Germany, Italy, India, Israel, Japan, Kenya, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Rhodesia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tasmania, United States of America, and Yugoslavia. Among them were Mr. V. L. Grenning, Director of Forestry in Queensland, Mr. A. L. Poole, Assistant Director of Forestry in New Zealand, Mr. C. A. R. Bhadran, Chief Conservator of Forests for Madras, India, and Mr. V. H. Phelps from the Forest Research Division, Canada. A party of students from l’Ecole Nationale des Eaux et Forets at Nancy, during their first visit to this country, were engaged on a study tour which in­ cluded various of our experimental areas as well as a visit to Alice Holt. Other organised visits to Alice Holt included the Senior Forestry Officers of the Over­ seas Colonial Service, and a party of Yugoslav Forest Officers. Forestry students from the Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford, from the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and the University College of North Wales at Bangor, paid their annual visits to the Research Station. Several visitors spent longer periods at the Research Station. Among these was Mr. M. R. Badan from Switzerland who started a year’s work with the Management Section in August 1960; in the same section, Mr. M. A. Solak from Turkey, visiting England for a year, under a Baghdad Pact Fellowship, has spent several periods with the Research Branch, alternating with work at Oxford.

    Looking towards AttadalePhoto by by PeterPeter Teago AN CARRANNACH The General Interest Magazine of Lochcarron, Shieldaig, Applecross, Kishorn, Torridon & Kinlochewe Districts NO: 367 August 2018 £1.00 “Walking to the Island” and other poems. by Alan MacGillivray "Walking to the Island” is a collection of poems which, in the author’s own words, is “A poetic evocation of boyhood summer holidays in the Wester Ross village of Lochcarron in the years during and just after the second world war.” This modest description, found on the back cover of the book, is accurate enough to whet the appetite of anyone who might casually pick it up for inspection, but fails to do justice to the scope and range of the work found within its covers. “Walking to the Island” is itself a sequence of poems and prose poetry, by turns nostalgic, celebratory, descriptive and elegiac, the totality of which is considerably more than the sum of any of its constituent parts. These are poems, which, like a good malt “uisge beatha”, which in a way they resemble, need to be savoured slowly and appreciatively. Their memories, observation, humour, wit and wisdom a complex and heady distillation of experience matured over time, and served up here in verse, which has style and variety sufficient to maintain the reader’s interest over the course of the “journey”, a journey both back in time, but also into the heart and soul of a community and culture. There is the occasional flash of anger, and overall a sense of sadness entirely in keeping with the book’s dedication to the author’s late brother James MacGillivray of affectionate memory in these parts.

    Destination Management in Wester Ross Baseline Reports Consultation Exercise Winter, 2019/20 Context Upwards of an estimated c.100,000450,000 tourists visit Wester Ross every year, sustaining local communities through their input to the local economy. However, in the current climate we know that there are concerns that a rise in tourism over the past few years coupled with difficulties in infrastructure investment may not be sustainable. We have to accept that mass tourism is not going away, but we don’t have to accept that tourism management in Wester Ross continues to be reactive; instead of proactive. Together we can change that. Instigated by the Wester Ross Biosphere, (a community managed UNESCO designation that exists to connect people and nature to inspire a positive future), a steering group was formed of Public Sector representatives, ourselves and Visit Wester Ross with the intention of developing a community-led Destination Management Plan (DMP). We believe that by working together, across public sector, community and industry we can make small changes so that a culture of managing and planning for tourism development can be fostered. Wester Ross can be a great place to visit and a great place to live. DMPs are as dull as they are exciting. They consider all aspects of the Visitor Experience, from ensuring everyone has access to basic facilities and infrastructure to planning what exciting activities to get up to on holiday. The process is being led by Wester Ross Biosphere with staff resources from an EU Northern Periphery and Arctic Program project called SHAPE (Sustainable Heritage Area, Partnerships for ecotourism).

    FUAR THOLL-HILL OF THE COLD HOLES. BY WINIFRED D. HUTCHISON. A FEW miles inland from the Little Minch lies a group of small mountain ranges of exceeding variety and beauty— Achnashellach Forest. On the morning of north-west breezes, when puffs of sunlit cumulus drifted above the glens, we left the high road and took to the track by the Allt Coire Lair among the old Scots pines. Trout darted in pools the colour of bubbling goblets of champagne and waterfalls glinted between the gnarled pine trunks. To the north lay the long undulat- ing spine of Liath Mhòr, its steep scree slopes lit by the sunshine to a bleached and dazzling glare. Far away behind us, violet and hazy with distance, rolled the great tangle of the south-west Ross-shire mountains, billow on billow. The burn's song grew thinner, the air became crisper and presently we stood in an amphitheatre of great magnifi- cence ; as the solemn beauty of a cathedral steals upon one, as organ music swells and ebbs upon still air, so was the silence in these mountains, so was the cadence of innumerable waters whose age-old song was wafted to us, now louder, now fainter, upon the wind. Many hill tracks lead through passes to remote adjoining glens, and provide less strenuous but just as rewarding walking.

Munro In any discussion of life in Ross-shire, past or present, the great geographi­ cal contrast between East and West has to be borne in mind. In ecclesiasti­ cal affairs that contrast is seen in the thick cluster of parish churches found in the fertile and populous lowlands of the east coast, while on the other side of the watershed lie the huge parishes of the western seaboard [Fig. 6.1]. What we loosely call Wester Ross today first appears on record as 'North Argyll'. So it was named in King Robert's charter to Thomas Randolph as Earl of Moray, even though it was distinctly stated then to belong to the Earl of Ross. At various early periods the lands of Kintail, Lochalsh and Gairloch are all shown as lying in North Argyll. In history as well as geog­ raphy, this is a place apart, worth studying for itself (RRS. V. 633, VI. 505; OPS. II(ii). 395; RMS. I. 437).
