2012 TINTA DE TORO (D.O. TORO)

The region of Toro is a predominantly red-wine appellation in Castilla y León in north-western . Toro is situated west of the Spanish Duero river valley near the Portuguese border. Toro appellation covers approximately 5,600 ha of vineyards at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. At the end of the 19th century great quantities of were exported to France during the phylloxera crisis, which did not affect the local vines as they were protected by the sandy soil. For this reason, the vines of other regions of Spain were replaced by vines from Toro. Today, Toro still has a number of very old vineyards with pre-phyloxera Tinta de Toro.

VARIETAL: 85% Tinta de Toro, 15% Garnacha APPELLATION: Toro, Spain VINES: Toro: 15-25 years old; Garnacha: 65+ years old ALCOHOL: 13.5% VINTAGE CHARACTERISTICS: Good maturation with a rainy sum- mer. The harvest began in mid-September. The quality has been very good.

TASTING NOTES NEW ZEALAND A fine cherry color with an intense purple edge. The Tinta de Toro variety shows its great personality in the nose, wild fruits (raspberries, blackberries, blueber- ries) along with an elegant balsamic and mineral touch.
