What was originally a transportation services coordination plan is now a comprehensive document full of transportation facts and information. This year’s document is the sixteenth version of the Annual Update and continues the tradition of providing information on the most important transportation and transit stories of the last year. The format is designed to allow a reader to quickly find information on hundreds of transportation issues. The report also provides information on the issues that shape the region and the institutional and legislative settings within which transportation policies and programs are planned and implemented. This year, the Northern Virginia region faced a series of transportation related challenges. First, project cost estimates for two major regional transportation projects (the Springfield Interchange and Woodrow Wilson Bridge) were revised to amounts well over their anticipated budgets. As a result, several transit strategies designed to reduce congestion generated from the construction of these projects had to be eliminated. Another setback was the lack of funding available for transit in Northern Virginia’s submission to the Constrained Long Range Plan. This near absence of transit projects was particularly noteworthy as the guiding Northern Virginia 2020 Plan called for a balance between highway and transit. As the region is faced with these real challenges in funding transit, the importance of transit to the economy and lifestyle of our region should not be overlooked. Throughout the document, success stories are provided as a reminder of the importance of transit in a balanced transportation system. The document is made up of 13 sections that provide data in the form of summary tables. The Appendix contains contact information for agencies with responsibilities for regulating, planning, financing, and operating specific parts of the complex transportation system. The Ad Hoc MetroAccess Advisory Committee will provide a 45-day interim report and a gO-dayfinal report to WMATA's Board of Directors outlining specific ways to improve MetroAccess.

MetroAccess and Abilities-Ride MetroAccess Paratransit – Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) MetroAccess is a shared-ride, door-to-door public transportation service for people who are unable to use fixed-route public transit due to disability. "Shared ride" means that multiple passengers may ride together in the same vehicle. The service provides daily trips throughout the Transit Zone in the Washington Metropolitan region. The Transit Zone consists of the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church in Northern Virginia. Rides are offered in the same service areas and during the same hours of operation as Metrorail and Metrobus.

Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) owns the Purple Line. MTA has contracted with a large consortium of contractors and engineers under the umbrella of Purple Line Transit Partners who are completing the design of the project and are building the project today. When the Purple Line opens, Purple Line Transit Operators will take over for a 30-year term. The project is scheduled to open by the end of 2022.

The TPB prepares plans and programs that the federal government must approve in order for federal- aid transportation funds to flow to the Washington region.
