MIKE LEIGH STARTS SHOOTING ‘PETERLOO’ London, 17th May 2017... Shooting starts next week on Mike Leigh’s PETERLOO. The story of the infamous 1819 massacre at a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester, when many working people were injureD anD killeD, the film will shoot on location in EnglanD until late August. A cast of over 100 actors has been assembleD. Amazon Studios is co-financier anD US Distributor, with aDDitional finance coming from Film4, who backed the film's development, the BFI, and Lipsync. PETERLOO reunites the writer-director with his regular team of Oscar® anD BAFTA winners anD nominees, heaDeD by proDucer Georgina Lowe, anD incluDing Dick Pope (cinematography), Suzie Davies (proDuction Design), Jacqueline Durran (costumes), Christine BlunDell (hair anD make-up), Jon Gregory (eDiting) anD Gary Yershon (music). BFI London Film Festival announces first ever Premiere outside London with Manchester Special Presentation of Mike Leigh’s PETERLOO Embargo: Thursday 16th August – Wide 10:00am LONDON, Thursday 16th August: The 62nd BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is thrilled to announce the UK Premiere of Mike Leigh’s PETERLOO live from HOME in Manchester, followed by a Q&A, simulcast to cinemas around the UK, on Wednesday 17 October. The premiere will be attended by Leigh and members of the cast. On Friday 19th October the film will also screen in London, with a Q+A afterwards with Mike Leigh. Distributed by Entertainment One (eOne), PETERLOO tells the story of the Peterloo massacre, which took place 199 years ago today, on 16 August 1819, and stars Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Bell, Philip Jackson, Vincent Franklin, Karl Johnson and Tim McInnerny. The screening represents the first time the BFI London Film Festival has premiered a film outside of the capital, offering audiences in Manchester and nationwide the opportunity to preview a major release with Manchester’s history at its forefront. Written and directed by Mike Leigh, PETERLOO is an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protestors were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression.

Gary Yershon
Gary Yershon COMPOSER Nominated for an Academy Award and Ivor Novello Award for his score to Mike Leigh’s highly acclaimed Mr Turner, Gary Yershon’s 40-year career as a composer – spanning film, television, theatre and radio – continues to grow and grow to this day. After reading Music and Drama at Hull University, Gary pursued a parallel career as an actor up until 1991, when he gave up the limelight to focus primarily on composing. For film, Gary has collaborated extensively with the celebrated director, Mike Leigh. Their first collaboration began in 1999 with Topsy-Turvy, on which Gary was musical director. His first score for Leigh was on the iconic British comedy-drama, Happy-Go-Lucky, followed by Another Year, which gained Gary a nomination as European Film Award Best Composer, the short film A Running Jump, and most recently Peterloo, starring Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake. Gary’s other recent scores include the film Brighton, directed by Stephen Cookson and the comedy drama 23 Walks for MetFilm. Gary has also written for TV, where his work ranges from detective drama (Trial and Retribution IX & X) to children’s cartoons (James the Cat, Ebb and Flo). Many of Gary’s theatre scores are for the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he is an Associate Artist. He has also scored for the National Theatre, the West End and Broadway, where in 2009 he received a Drama Desk nomination for The Norman Conquests. Gary has written extensively for BBC Radio since 1979, beginning as a singer-songwriter for Radio 4’s Midweek.
