1 LETTER FROM THE CON CHAIR

Greetings COAF attendees, staff, friends, and family! Thank you and welcome to Colorado Fest’s third year. We are excited to see you back if you’re returning, and we are also thrilled to see you here if this is your first COAF. There’s a lot to enjoy at COAF 2018. We’ve kept all your favorite things from great guests, the premier Japanese cultural track of the region, the original anime bar, crazy and loud Taiko drummers, Colorado’s only manga library and more! And we’ve added new favorites like COAF Character Encounters: Speed Q&A, a new take on the popular ‘ask a character’ and speed dating-type panels. We here at Colorado Anime Fest always strive to be the most friendly, fun, and enjoyable convention, from our programming to our staff. If you see any of us around, please feel free to ask us if you have a question, or just want to say hi! This is your convention, and we certainly can’t thank you enough for your support. I’d also like to personally take this moment to recognize and dedicate this year’s convention to the staffer we lost last year. DJ Bullock was a key reason why COAF was so successful from our very first year. I have no doubt he is with us in spirit this weekend. We’ll never, ever forget him and will be raising money for musical education charity Youth on Record in his honor this year. Here’s to you, Ben! Corey Wood Convention Chair

3 RULES & POLICIES

Here at COAF, we don’t want to be a con all about rules and don’t want to have any more than necessary. You can help by following these simple policies to ensure everyone has an enjoyable convention. • Always wear your badges visibly and hang on to them at all times while on the convention floor. • Have questions? Ask at Ops or speak to Convention Response Team (CRT) staffers. * Use common sense when understanding the rules of behavior, personal interactions, and respect for both private and public property. Attendees, staff and other persons finding themselves in a situation where they feel their safety is at risk should locate the nearest security or staff member for resolution.

ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY COAF is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. Harassment includes, but is not limited to: abusive verbal comments; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation or stalking; unwanted photography/recording; being disruptive; inappropriate physical contact; unwelcome sexual attention; encouraging any of the above. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If they fail to do so, we retain the right to take action, such as warning the offender or expulsion without refund. If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible to any staff member or Con Ops. We do not tolerate harassment of convention participants in any form. Our decisions are final.

COSPLAY Per hotel policy; no shirt, no shoes, no service. In general, no ‘pink bits’ or ‘pointy bits’ should be showing OR depicted on your cosplay. We recommend tan-colored tape. Your costume should not be an adult-level PG-13 or rated R level. No costumes depicting official government agencies such as American law enforcement nor current military uniforms are allowed. Larger or bulky costumes within the convention and hotel must be able to fit through a standard doorway (36 inches) to ensure fire safety rules. If a costume grants poor visibility or ventilation, we request that the cosplayer keeps a handler available to escort him/her. No costume props may cause smoke, odor or fog. If you want such a device for the cosplay competition, please speak with staff in advance and we will decide the device’s appropriateness.

PROPS All props are to be checked in with CRT before they are allowed into the convention areas. CRT will peace bind any props. Props must be kept on the signee while on the convention floor at all times. If a prop is shared with attendee, both parties are responsible for the prop and both will be held accountable for any misconduct. Violation of peace binding may result in immediate loss of prop privileges. It is the responsibility of the attendee to bring any prop back to security to re-bind if necessary. Banned items • Anything illegal in the state of Colorado or the . • Any live steel weapons that do not have a sheath. “Live Steel” is any metal that can or does hold an edge. • No projectile or firearms of any kind. • If security deems a prop dangerous or harmful in any way, it will be banned from the grounds. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis. • Metal items used for costumes are not allowed to have sharp or pointed edges that could cause injury to oneself or others.

4 RULES & POLICIES

Allowed items Live steel props that are properly sheathed and peace bound are acceptable. If item cannot be bound to prevent it from being drawn, it will not be allowed. Nerf or airsoft guns that have a non- removable orange safety tip and do not look remotely real will be allowed, following the conditions that the trigger mechanism will be peace bound and all ammunition is emptied from the device. Any blunt or wood props will be evaluated to determine if they will cause any risk. Any large items such as baseball bats, wooden swords, frying pans, etc. may be allowed conditionally. Any functional ammunition (real); such as arrows, must have tips removed and be zip-tied to their quiver or casing. AUTOGRAPHS • All COAF guests will sign at scheduled sessions. • The first autograph at a scheduled COAF autograph session is always free with your valid convention membership. Guests may sell optional prints, and/or charge for multiple autographs, photos or recordings to help keep the line manageable. Every guest is different. Just ask. • If you require accommodations while waiting in line, please ask the line attendants. COAF is committed to equal, accessible access for all. • Staff may impose limits on the number of autographs allowed. • Guests may also sign at vendor tables. Those are not official COAF signings and may require additional costs.

CAMERA AND MEDIA DEVICES If you intend to charge attendees for photoshoots, we require you to purchase Credentialed Photographer Access. It’s only fair: anyone financially profiting from our event and/or attendees must be accounted for via similar regulations as our vendors and artists. This credential will also grant you advance access and reserved seating to select cosplay events. We use proceeds from this to benefit the COAF cosplay community as a whole, including you! See the Press Table for more information.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) ACCOMMODATIONS If you require assistance for you or a loved one, please ask a staff member or inquire at Con Ops.

Some of the services we’re prepared to provide: • Line assistance and advanced seating assistance. • Additional assistance as necessary and available. • Large-print versions of the schedule (available at Registration and Con Ops). The Renaissance Denver Stapleton Hotel has the following ADA accommodations: • Wheelchairs, elevators, ADA-accessible bathrooms and parking. • Service animals are permitted within the hotel and convention grounds We will allow advanced event seating for persons in need and one (1) assisting companion. Please ask the line attendant at the event door. Companions must have a valid convention badge. All ADA persons and their companions must be of age to enter 18+ panels. This is first-come first-serve and based on room capacities. Request at least 15 minutes prior to panel start to ensure we can accommodate you. Please remember it’s not always easy for a busy staffer to know when assistance is needed. If a staffer asks for more details, it’s to better understand your situation and how we can be of assistance. Please help us help you!

Last year’s guests tried to spell out COAF. Points for effort! 7 GUESTS OF HONOR GREGGO’S GAME SHOWS Greggo has been producing and hosting game shows at anime conventions since 1999, when he premiered Anime Match Game at Project A-Kon in Dallas. Since then, Greggo has done anime- themed versions of several classic game shows, created a few games of his own, and even had an original project that very nearly turned into an actual television show on Anime Network. These days Greggo is concentrating on perfecting his craft and making game shows available for conventions everywhere, bringing his rapier wit and friendly personality with him wherever he goes. You can see some of Greggo’s past game show efforts on his YouTube page: www..com/gregdasgo.

KIERAN STRANGE + Kieran Strange is a powerful performer and self-published author. His first novel is M/M sci-fi thriller Black Tie: Book 1 of the Sparrow Archives. Musically, he blends pop sensibilities, dynamic guitars, and high-energy rock into his geeky British pop-punk. Standing firmly as a voice for the different and discarded, it was during COAF 2016 that Kieran decided to change his pronouns from “she” to “he” following a long struggle with his transgender identity. Some causes he fights to support include LGBTQ+/SAGA issues and rights, feminism, autism awareness, racial equality, refugee and immigrant rights, many forms of mental health and suicide awareness, and more. Kieran has joined forces with Dave Kitsberg and will release a new album in 2018 as WE ARE THE CHAOS! SAMURAI DAN & JILLIAN Dan Coglan, a.k.a. “Samurai Dan” and his wife, Jillian are the acknowledged masters of marital… er, MARTIAL mayhem. In addition to their high-energy, mostly safe stage shows (where razor sharp blades and barbs fly) the couple teaches historical and hysterical panels on the way of the warrior. Offering a wide range of lectures and interactive workshops, Dan and his lethal love Jillian are guaranteed to provide con attendees fun and fulfillment. Due to a supreme lack of filter, Dan also performs standup comedy, and lives to embarrass his wife onstage, in censored and uncensored settings. A storyteller at heart, Dan is finishing his third horror novel, and offers insights into the creative process with panels for the aspiring writer as well. 8 MAIN EVENTS (COLORADO A-B)

Separated into Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Master categories, attendees in costume will be competing for the top prizes as well as the coveted Audience Choice award. COAF Character Encounters: Speed Q&A At Colorado Anime Fest, we’re trying something different by putting our own spin on the popular “ask a character” panels. Instead of getting to ask just a few characters from one show some questions, you’ll have a chance to chat with characters from many different anime all in one afternoon in a “speed dating” format. We’ll divide attendees into groups, and each group will have a few minutes to chat with each character. When the bell rings, each group will meet a new character. We’ll continue to rotate until everyone has had a chance to meet all the characters. If you’re interested in participating as a character in costume, come visit us at the Panelist Check-In Table near Operations on Friday or Saturday. Everyone who participates as a character will receive a thank-you gift from the con. Cosplay Chess Swords and fists will fly as your cosplayers dressed as your favorite characters duke it out on a giant chessboard controlled by two chess masters on the main stage, Sunday at 10:00 AM. Charity Auction From one-of-a-kind anime cels and production sketches to wall scrolls, figures and prints signed by the casts of popular anime and video games, our auction has something for everyone. Closing Ceremonies Kieran Strange and WE ARE THE CHAOS guitarist Dave Kitsberg emcee the end of COAF 2018. Stick around for a special announcement about Colorado Anime Fest 2019, you won’t want to miss it! Colorado Anime Fest Feedback Session Every year after Closing Ceremonies, join COAF executive staff as you talk and we listen. We’re eager to hear your feedback—good or bad—and answer your questions. Tell us about something that made your con experience special, or let us know why something at the con was a major bummer for you. By sharing your feedback, you can help improve future conventions.

Last year, the Colorado convention community lost someone very special. Ben Bullock (known to the public as DJ Bullock) was a dedicated staff member of multiple conventions for nearly two decades. He was a part of COAF from the start, and the convention wouldn’t be the success it is today without his quiet, selfless expertise. We’ll never forget him and we strive every day to be an event he would’ve been proud of.

This year, in collaboration with the Bullock family, we’ve chosen our charity in his honor. Denver- based Youth on Record is a powerful example of what’s possible when musicians and community leaders band together around a common cause: ensuring students graduate from high school. They believe that young people who are at-risk or written-off have the potential to turn their lives around. Youth on Record helps Colorado’s underserved youth achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local, professional musical artists as their educators.

Check out our charity booth and charity auction for one-of-a-kind autographed keepsakes and frequent raffles. From rare anime production cels and sketches to signed wall scrolls and prints, you won’t find items like these anywhere else.

The Charity Booth is located in the Vendors’ Hall. Charity Auction: Sunday March 25, 3:30 PM - Main Events
