August 2015 Dream. Share. Build. OUR COMMUNITY.

Summer is a time to slow down the pace, relax a bit and enjoy a break from the normal routine. However, at The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County, it is a time for the annual financial audit, staff training, office reorganizing and jumping into the planning for the new fiscal year....busy, busy, busy!! We are excited to offer a new format for our newsletter, announce scholarship recipients, provide the Spring Community Needs list of nonprofit funding opportunities and give you information on future events. Please let us know if we can answer questions or work with you to establish a fund. Call us today at 540-432-3863 (FUND). As always, we are most grateful for our 2015 Professional Partners in Philanthropy and appreciate the professional and financial support they provide The Community Foundation. As Rockingham County teachers, they saw this financial struggle all too often. The Earlys have dedicated their lives to education and to encouraging and supporting students in every way. They taught multiple generations of the same families at what was then Montevideo High School and at (continued on page 2) (continued from page 1) Spotswood High School. Pat taught biology and chemistry and sponsored the yearbook and . Dennis taught math and coached golf. Both were inspired to pursue careers in education by one of their own teachers. Pat says, "We each had a teacher at High School whom we greatly admired and instilled in us a love for math and science and a desire to teach after college." Over the years the Earlys saw firsthand that many families lack the resources to cover the ever rising college costs. So this year they established the Dennis R. and Patricia R. Early Scholarship to help students achieve their educational goals. The scholarship award is $4,000 per year and is renewable as long as the student meets the requirements of carrying a full time load of classes and maintaining a 3.0 or better GPA.

The Early Scholarship is for students of Rockingham County high schools interested in studying in the fields of math or science or in becoming a K-12 math or science teacher. Preference is given to students from military families. Student career interests might include nursing, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, computer science, among others. Students must attend Blue Ridge Community College, Bridgewater College, James Madison University or Eastern Mennonite University and may live on campus or commute.

The first recipient of the Early Scholarship is Tyler Hall of Spotswood High School. Tyler found out about the award at his school's award ceremony in late May. "I was very excited and humbled to learn that I had been named as the first recipient of the Early Scholarship," he says. Tyler is attending Blue Ridge Community College with plans to transfer to James Madison University. His goal is to become an athletic trainer at the high school or college level. Tyler is looking forward to starting his college career, and adds, "I will strive to do my best to make The Community Foundation and the Early Family proud."

For now the Earlys are funding one scholarship each year. After their lifetime, their estate will endow the scholarship fund, and they hope to provide several scholarships per year for Rockingham county students.

**************************************************************** A Message from the Executive Director Our generous donors make it all possible. We say those words every day and thanks to the generosity of many donors, we build a better community. Recently I sat down and met with a donor who wished to establish a new scholarship fund for his alma mater, Emory & Henry College. The Emory & Henry College Scholarship Fund, established by David Driver, will be able to support local high school seniors with their college education at the school for all four years. The Community Foundation is pleased to manage a number of scholarships ranging from the traditional academic and athletic awards to others which focus on a specific field of study. Some scholarships are based on financial need yet others on academic record and leadership. As you can imagine, helping a student get a college education on behalf of a most generous family is priceless, particularly if the student isn’t going to attend college without that scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of donors, this year we will award 23 scholarships for over $62,000 in scholarship money to support students working to reach their full potential in colleges and university across the country.

Nonprofit organizations across this community are doing great work too. Be sure to take a look at the Community Needs listing in this newsletter. If you are a donor advisor, consider a grant to one of these organizations. The projects listed are not funded by the private sector or govementment and anyone may send a gift to support these needs.

Every gift is appreciated and gifts come in all shapes and sizes. Some donors use cash, others securities, real estate or even life insurance. We welcome the opportunity to assist you in establishing a charitable fund to benefit your favorite charity or charities. Perhaps you are interested in establishing a scholarship. Maybe you wish to provide funding for seniors, the library, a clinic or a local museum, or perhaps you want to provide an endowment for your church and a variety of nonprofit organizations. Please let us know how we can assist you. Managing charitable funds is our business. Call us at 540-432-3863 as we Dream.Share.Build. OUR COMMUNITY.....today, tomorrow, forever. We look forward to working with you. Revlan S. Hill, Executive Director Congratulations to our 2015 Scholarship Recipients!
