Ezekiel 33-34 • Our long-anticipated start to the second part of Ezekiel has fnally arrived ○ Today we begin studying prophecies concerning the future glory and blessings the Lord has planned for His people, Israel • This is a welcome change from Chapters 1-32, which were a series of oracles pronouncing judgment • In those chapters the Lord told Israel that the nation was on the verge of complete destruction • The city, the walls and the temple were going to be destroyed by Babylon • The Leadership would be removed, the people would be taken out of the land, and their exile would last for some time • Finally, at the end of those chapters the Lord spoke judgment against Israel’s enemies that surrounded her ○ But now we’ve come through all that, and the Lord is ready to show His people that better things awaited them in the future • Now remember, the calamity Israel has just experienced in Ezekiel’s day came as a result of the Mosaic covenant • In that covenant the Lord gave His people a law that came with strict requirements and harsh penalties for disobedience • The nation agreed to those terms, and now the Lord has acted to hold them accountable to that covenant ○ But before the Lord gave His people the Old Covenant through Moses, He had previously given them a very different covenant through Abraham • The Abrahamic covenant, unlike the Mosaic Covenant, promised Abraham’s descendants only blessings • And also unlike the Mosaic Covenant, the Lord’s promises to Abraham were unconditional • God asks absolutely nothing of Abraham and his descendants © 2019 – Verse By Verse Ministry International (www.versebyverseministry.org) May be copied and distributed provided the document is reproduced in its entirety, including this copyright statement, and no fee is collected for its distribution. -

Ezekiel “Hope for Israel”
Ezekiel “Hope for Israel” I. Introduction to Ezekiel Ezekiel is the twenty-sixth book of the Old Testament and the fourth among the Major Prophets. The book has forty-eight chapters, but by word count it is second in size to Jeremiah, among the prophetic books and is the third largest book in the Bible. Ezekiel was included in the Septuagint and its place in the canon has never been seriously questioned in Christian circles. Ezekiel is filled with some of the most fascinating and vivid prophesies of the Old Testament. Sadly, however, Ezekiel has been neglected by many, leaving it as a hunting ground for cultists. This book deserves our careful study if for no other reason than to silence the false teachers who misuse its teachings. Ezekiel gets its name from its author and main character. His name means “God strengthens”. He is not mentioned anywhere else in the Old testament.. All we know about him is in this book. He was a priest Ezekiel 1:3 He was married Ezekiel 24:16 He was taken captive at age 25 in 597 B.C. during the reigns of Jehoiachin and Zedekiah He began his prophetic ministry at age 30 He was exiled to a settlement not far from Babylon called Tel-Abib He preached for at least twenty-two years; lived well beyond the fall of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. While Jeremiah pleaded with those who remained in Jerusalem, and Daniel sought to influence the heart of Babylon’s king, Ezekiel spent his time leading with those who lived in exile. -

When we think of sheep... • Not the brightest animals on the farm We think of “shepherds” in romantic terms – kind, gentle, a bit soft • It takes a strong person to care for them because sheep get themselves into trouble and can’t get out on their own Throughout the Bible God revealed Himself as the shepherd of His people. • Ps 23. The Lord is my shepherd • Gen 48:15. Jacob: God has been my shepherd all my life to this day • Ps 100:3. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture • Prophets: Is 40:11. Like a shepherd he tends his flock; he gathers up the lambs with his arm; he carries them close to his heart; he leads the ewes along. Caring for, loving His sheep is part of that image • Strength is the dominant theme. Safety, security, provision that flows from the shepherd’s strength and loving commitment to his sheep. • Gen 49:24 (NET). Joseph’s bow will remain steady, and his hands will be skillful; because of the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. As we continue our study of God our Father, I want us to keep in mind our heavenly Father is the perfect Father. He is a personal God; He loves us; He has adopted us into His family, and we are safe in His family because He is strong. -

Readings for November 23rd, 2014 – Last Sunday after Pentecost First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24 Hear the Word of God as it is written in Ezekiel chapter 34 verses 11 to 16 and 20 to 24. Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Ezekiel Chapter 34
Ezekiel Chapter 34 Ezekiel 34:1 "And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying," This again is a brand new prophecy. Ezekiel turns from the people, to their leaders who have the greatest guilt. From this chapter on, Ezekiel’s messages are mostly comforting, telling of God’s grace and faithfulness to His covenant promises. Ezekiel 34:2 "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe [be] to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?" “Prophesy against the shepherds of Israel”: The reference was to pre-exilic leaders such as kings, priests, and prophets (their civil leaders), as well as their spiritual leaders. Meaning those false ones who fleeced the flock for personal gain (verses 3-4), rather than fed or led righteously. This stands in contrast to the Lord as Shepherd. These Scriptures have a meaning for the Jews and the Christians, as well. We will try to look at both, as we go along. The very beginning of these verses is a reprimand for not caring for the sheep. The kings then, and the preachers now, must be careful to feed the sheep. That is the primary job of a shepherd. Ezekiel 34:3 "Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: [but] ye feed not the flock." This speaks of those who take from the sheep and give nothing. We see in some churches today, that ministers are living far above the conditions of their people and are not teaching them true doctrine or the dangers of not living according to God’s holy word. -

‘I WILL SAVE MY PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS’ THE INFLUENCE OF EZEKIEL 36:28B-29A; 37:23B ON MATTHEW 1:21 Nicholas G. Piotrowski Summary Matthean scholars are nearly unanimous that LXX Psalm 129:8 [MT 130:8] is the allusive background to Matthew 1:21 notwithstanding formidable semantic differences. Ezekiel 36:28b-29a; 37:23b, however, provides a more convincing and more fruitful conceptual background for Matthew’s programmatic verse. Semantic and thematic considerations bear this out. The result of reading Matthew 1:21 through the lens of Ezekiel 36:28b-29a; 37:23b is the selection of frames for reading the rest of the gospel in terms of the prophet’s vision for Israel’s restoration from exile. 1. Introduction The first gospel begins with a startling declaration that Jesus ‘will save his people from their sins’. There are only two verses in the entire Old Testament where salvation is from an internal moral enemy. Ezekiel 36:29a reads, ‘And I will save you from all your defilements’.1 Ezekiel 37:23b reads, ‘But I will save them from all their assemblies in which σῴζω יָשַׁע they sinned’. All other uses of / (‘save’) in the OT regard historically identifiable oppressors external to a group or individual.2 1 All translations are the author’s own. יָשַׁע 2 John E. Hartley (‘ ’, TWOT: 1:414-16) provides a plethora of examples that demonstrate ‘the majority of references to salvation speak of Yahweh granting deliverance from real enemies and out of real catastrophies’. The only example he יָשַׁע provides of the verb outside this ‘majority’ is Ezek. -

Could these chapters be called THE WASTED WORDS OF JESUS. The temple is no longer needed. But maybe it is related to the millennial kingdom. 1 Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle. 2 And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits. -

The Presence of God in Ezekiel Sid Latham Introduction: I. The purpose of this paper is to examine the instances of the presence of God in the book of Ezekiel. To some, such a study may seem esoteric and impractical. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyday decisions occur at the nexus of theology (how we view God) and philosophy (how we view the world). II. When the heavens were opened and Ezekiel saw visions of God, he saw the most practical and real thing anyone could see. (Ezekiel 1:1) We must attempt to see those visions after him and to aid others in doing so. This is not just an important aspect of what we do, it is the whole of what we do. It is the purpose of our existence, not as preachers, but as creatures made in the image of God! III. Because of the constraints of time and format we are going to focus on three passages in Ezekiel. Ezekiel 1-3, 8-11 and 40-48. There are a number of reasons for this: A. These three passages form the broad strokes of the narrative development of Ezekiel’s prophesy: God’s presence arrives among the captives in Babylon. (1-3) God leaves the temple and calls down judgment in Jerusalem. (8-11) God restores His presence in the eschatological temple. (40-48) B.Ezekiel himself links these three passages in the following ways: 1. All three passages are dated. (Ezekiel 1:1; 8:1; 40:1) 2. All three passages include the statement, “the hand of the Lord was on me” or some very similar formulation.
