Ezekiel Chapter 21
Ezekiel Chapter 21 Chapter 21: Since the people did not seem to understand the parable of the devouring fire, Ezekiel now explains the impending judgment in terms of a sword. First, the lord is pictured as a warrior who says, “I the Lord have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath” (verse 5). Then the sword is sharpened to make a sore slaughter (verse 10), and directed toward Judah (verse 20). Finally, Ammon would likewise be slain by the sword (verses 28-32). (Verse 21), gives interesting insight into the Babylonian practice of divination. Three distinct ways for determining the will of the gods are mentioned. Casting arrows (much like our “drawing straws”), consulting images (directly or as mediums to departed spirits), and hepatoscopy, or the examination of the liver. In the last named practice, a sacrificial animal was slain, its liver was examined, and the particular shape and configuration was compared with a catalog of symptoms and predictions. The point is that no matter how much the Babylonian king foolishly uses his divination, the will of the one true God will be accomplished. In verses (21:1-7) The Word came. This is the sign of the sword against Jerusalem. God depicts His judgment in terms of a man unsheathing his polished sword for a deadly thrust. God is the swordsman (verses 3-4), but Babylon is His sword (verse 19). Ezekiel 21:1-2 "And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying," "Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop [thy word] toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel," This is the beginning of another prophecy. -

Ezekiel “Hope for Israel” I. Introduction to Ezekiel Ezekiel is the twenty-sixth book of the Old Testament and the fourth among the Major Prophets. The book has forty-eight chapters, but by word count it is second in size to Jeremiah, among the prophetic books and is the third largest book in the Bible. Ezekiel was included in the Septuagint and its place in the canon has never been seriously questioned in Christian circles. Ezekiel is filled with some of the most fascinating and vivid prophesies of the Old Testament. Sadly, however, Ezekiel has been neglected by many, leaving it as a hunting ground for cultists. This book deserves our careful study if for no other reason than to silence the false teachers who misuse its teachings. Ezekiel gets its name from its author and main character. His name means “God strengthens”. He is not mentioned anywhere else in the Old testament.. All we know about him is in this book. He was a priest Ezekiel 1:3 He was married Ezekiel 24:16 He was taken captive at age 25 in 597 B.C. during the reigns of Jehoiachin and Zedekiah He began his prophetic ministry at age 30 He was exiled to a settlement not far from Babylon called Tel-Abib He preached for at least twenty-two years; lived well beyond the fall of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. While Jeremiah pleaded with those who remained in Jerusalem, and Daniel sought to influence the heart of Babylon’s king, Ezekiel spent his time leading with those who lived in exile. -

Ezekiel Week 1 Introduction and Background Outline of Ezekiel The Book virtually divides itself into three major sections: (1) call and oracles of judgment on Israel (chs 1–24); (2) oracles of judgment on foreign nations, or Gentile oracles (chs 25– 32); and (3) oracles and visions of restoration (chs 33–48). We read this in Jeremiah 1: “The Word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’” What’s going on? Why this emphasis on the nations? Jeremiah lived in a time, the last few decades of the 600s or the seventh century B.C., when there were many things happening that were truly cataclysmic. -

The Scriptures say it’s noble to “search the Scriptures daily” to verify truth like the ancient Bereans did (Acts 17:11). My folks came from Berea. My incredible Dad (and your grandfather and great grandfather, guys), Vasil Charles Valekis taught me to do this like he did---every day until I die. He taught me and everyone I know to go to church no matter what and to put God first. While Mama (Maria Pagona Stratakis Valekis) never really did this, she made sure we listened to Daddy on this one. She would have hit us with a spatula or frying pan or worse if we didn’t. -

EZEKIEL 25-32: ORACLES AGAINST THE NATIONS “Then the nations will know that I am the Lord” The dawn of a new era: the end of the old world and the beginning of a new world ■ Ch. 24 is the last of the judgment oracles in the first part of the book (chs. 1-24). The opening of the prophet’s mouth (v.27) signified a turning point in Israel’s history: the old era of sin and judgment had come to an end; the new era of hope and salvation could begin. ■ Thus, the exiles would refrain from mourning not because they would be paralyzed by grief or calloused by sin, but because they would recognize the dawn of a new age – there is a ray of hope. ■ The fugitive’s announcement of the fall of the city would mark the end of the old world. It will in effect be welcome news. No more false hope of return: Jerusalem will have paid her debts; the judgment will have passed. ■ This chapter points toward Ch. 33 (in an earlier edition of Ezekiel’s prophecies, ch. 33 seems to have followed immediately after ch. 24); instead, like the exilic community, we have to wait. And in the meantime, we have chs. 25-32. Structure of Chapters 25-32 (A series of oracles against the surrounding nations) ■ 6 oracles addressed to Judah’s immediate neighbours (chs. 25-28) – Arranged in clockwise order – starting with Ammon in the Transjordan to the east, – moving south to the other Transjordan foes: Moab and Edom – Then turning west to Philistia in the southern coastal plain – Finally north to the coastal cities of Tyre (26:1-28:19) and Sidon (28:20-23) ■ A climatic 7th oracle against the traditional enemy, Egypt (chs. -

Is this the UNNECESSARY TEMPLE: few Jewish people returned from captivity in Babylon, though it seems the Lord had great plans; the people were underwhelmed and faithless 2500 years ago. Could these chapters be called THE WASTED WORDS OF JESUS. The temple is no longer needed. But maybe it is related to the millennial kingdom. 1 Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle. 2 And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits.
