Metals in the Future – why now? Understanding materials flows and successfully predicting long-term demand has always been central to maintaining a leadership position in the metals and mining sector. However, as the world strives to meet environmental targets, the complexity of accurately forecasting future resource requirements increases and regulatory uncertainty also contributes to creating further challenges around long-term incentive prices and the business environment. The pace of change is accelerating significantly and, given the long lead-times and high capital costs required to bring new mines and mills to market, it is imperative the industry acts now, to make itself as attractive as possible to investors and to ensure adequate supply of the materials that are building the future.

While more and more industrialised countries have announced plans to phase out the use of coal in the years to come, the world consumes 65% more coal today than in the year 2000. That is the hard reality we must address when balancing the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions with rising energy needs in many parts of the world, mainly in emerging markets.
