Bílik: The Role of the Roman Catholic Parish Acknowledgements I would like to thank my classmates for endless hours of discussions and debate in past two and half years. Their feedback and thoughts helped me to develop my own ideas and pushed me to explore the topics in question more. This thesis would not be the same without my thesis advisor, Dagmar Kusá, who guided me along the way and with patience read through my endless drafts. The work was also shaped by another faculty that I came across during my studies at BISLA, in particular Lynda Steyne, who taught me how to write in English and James Griffith, who discussed philosophical parts of my work with me. Lastly, I would like to thank my family, both my parents and grandparents. Conversations with them were great source of thoughts that shaped this thesis. -
A Cultural History of Catholic Nationalism in Slovakia, 1985-1993
A Cultural History of Catholic Nationalism in Slovakia, 1985-1993 Submitted by Agáta Drelová to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, September 2015 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 ABSTRACT This thesis is about the construction of a nationalised public Catholic culture in Slovakia from 1985 to 1993. At the core of this culture was the assumption that the Catholic Church had always been an integral part of the Slovak nation, her past, her present and her future. The thesis seeks to answer the question of who created this culture during the 1980s and 1990s and how and why they did so. To answer these questions this thesis adopts a cultural approach and explores how this culture was created utilising the concepts of collective memory, symbols and events as its main analytical tools. The data for this analysis include, but are not restricted to, materials produced in relation to various commemorative events and pilgrimages, especially those related to the leading national Catholic symbols: the National Patroness Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows and Saints Cyril and Methodius. The thesis argues that this culture was deliberately constructed from the point of view of many actors. -
