PAGE 2 SLOVAK CATHOLIC FALCON, FEBRUARY 10, 2016 Celebrating the Feast of Scenes of the Inaugural Meeting of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Supreme Physical Fitness Board Their tribute may be found at the United Nations in New York By Dr. Mikulas A. Halko On February 14th the Universal Church celebrates the feast of the great evangelizers, Saints Cyril and Methodius. Following the res- toration of the Church calendar of saints by Pope Paul VI in 1968, the feast of the brothers saints, who brought the gift of faith to our ancestors in Slovakia more than eleven centuries ago, was transferred from July to that of February 14th, the date of the death of Saint Cyril in Rome in 869 A.D. The brother saints have been portrayed over the years in many works of art and sculptor in many parts of the world. Quite appropriately, a statue honors their legacy on the grounds of the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. On Tuesday, September 24, 2013, Dr. From the left, Member of the Supreme Physical Fitness Board Martin Degnan, outgoing member Damian Pavol Demes, a noted Slovak historian, presented a lecture titled J. Suess, Members of the Physical Fitness Board Philip J. Walsh, Nancy Kropolinsky and Julie Laury. “In the Footsteps of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” This presentation took place at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City and was sponsored by the Consulate General of Slovakia in New York and the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the United Nations. Dr. Demes in his very interesting and attractive exhibit showed a picture of the monument dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius located on the grounds of the United Nations in New York City. Until that day, the very existence of the statue of Saints Cyril and Metho- dius on the grounds of the UN was not very well known to the Slovak community in the United States. We can speculate that at the time of its creation and installation in 1998 the news of the statue was not widely circulated. It was gift of Slovakia to the United Nations. When I fi rst learned the good news about the presence of such an important monument near the General Assembly building of the United Nations, I fi rst got the idea that we visit the memorial of ut- most importance for Slovak history. It took exactly 23 long months before we were able to visit the monument due to construction on the From the left, Honorary Supreme Offi cer Steven M. Pogorelec, F.I.C., Supreme Secretary Scott T. Arrangements for the visit were handled by Slovakia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Dr. Frantisek Ruzicka. Ambas- sador Ruzicka arranged the visit for the group which included the new pastor of New York’s Parish of St. John Nepomucene, the Rev. Richard D. Baker and the associate, the Rev. Stefan Chanas, as well as offi cers of the Slovak League of America. Ambas- sador Ruzicka personally welcomed the group and escorted them to the statue. In addition to Ambassador Ruzicka, thanks and grati- tude also go out to Richard Galbavy, an employee of the Permanent Slovak Mis- sion to the United Nations and an intern Miss Barbara Richtarikova who escouted Board members give their full attention to the deliberations. the group. The monument was designed and executed by the noted sculptor, Mae- stro Andrej Rudavsky of Bratislava. The work is made of bronze alloy and named “Apostles.” The work recalls Pope John Paul II’s naming Saints Cyril and Methodius as co-patrons of all of Europe in 1985. The monument was unveiled on September 24, 1998 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Zdenka Kramplova as a gift of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations. In addition to the reliefs of the brother saints, the monument includes various inscriptions in the Glagolitic alphabet, the fi rst alphabet of the Slovens, the ancestors of the Slovaks. On the monument, one can read the fi rst verse of St. John’s Gos- pel: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This verse is traditionally considered as the very Basil Wahal, communications director and managing editor of the Greek Catholic Union, second from the fi rst bible text that Saint Cyril translated from the Greek language left, was welcomed to the annual meeting. Bílik: The Role of the Roman Catholic Parish Acknowledgements I would like to thank my classmates for endless hours of discussions and debate in past two and half years. Their feedback and thoughts helped me to develop my own ideas and pushed me to explore the topics in question more. This thesis would not be the same without my thesis advisor, Dagmar Kusá, who guided me along the way and with patience read through my endless drafts. The work was also shaped by another faculty that I came across during my studies at BISLA, in particular Lynda Steyne, who taught me how to write in English and James Griffith, who discussed philosophical parts of my work with me. Lastly, I would like to thank my family, both my parents and grandparents. Conversations with them were great source of thoughts that shaped this thesis.

  • A Cultural History of Catholic Nationalism in Slovakia, 1985-1993
A Cultural History of Catholic Nationalism in Slovakia, 1985-1993 Submitted by Agáta Drelová to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, September 2015 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 ABSTRACT This thesis is about the construction of a nationalised public Catholic culture in Slovakia from 1985 to 1993. At the core of this culture was the assumption that the Catholic Church had always been an integral part of the Slovak nation, her past, her present and her future. The thesis seeks to answer the question of who created this culture during the 1980s and 1990s and how and why they did so. To answer these questions this thesis adopts a cultural approach and explores how this culture was created utilising the concepts of collective memory, symbols and events as its main analytical tools. The data for this analysis include, but are not restricted to, materials produced in relation to various commemorative events and pilgrimages, especially those related to the leading national Catholic symbols: the National Patroness Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows and Saints Cyril and Methodius. The thesis argues that this culture was deliberately constructed from the point of view of many actors.
