Many of our readers have huge collections of hydroplane pins, glasses, driver uniforms, art, pieces of boats, and any number of other mementos of this sport. Among them are Sue and John Boone, longtime hydro fans and Seattle race volunteers. During all the years of attending races and events, they have collected memorabilia that they display in their family room. World Championship by Jimmy gilbert -- Part 1 Jim Simpson photo The final race of the 2010 H1 Unlimited Hydroplane season was again scheduled for Doha, Qatar. The logistics were complicated somewhat by the re-establishment of the unlimited race in San Diego, California. Saltwater races, like San Diego, require a lot of equipment clean-up after the race. The plan for the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison team was to get the boat and equipment back to Madison as soon as possible after San Diego, pull the engine and gearbox out of the boat and perform a lot of reconfigurations on the gearboxes as well as inspect and repair the hot- ends of all the engines that had been used in San Diego. Steve Dean, the painter of the boat, agreed to drive the boat back to Madison so that Larry Hanson, the usual truck driver, would be more rested for the tasks he would be facing to get all the engine/gearbox work done in time to transport the truck, boat, and trailer to Jacksonville, Florida, for 1 eventual shipment to Qatar. There would be only about a week to get all the work finished in Madison, a daunting task indeed. Since most of the Madison team have other jobs, only Michael and Larry Hanson and Randy Gayle would most likely be available for work. The gearbox changes were necessary because San Diego is a two and one- half mile course and Doha is only two miles long.

    JULY 2010 2010 Madison Regatta; A Hometown Win by Craig Fjarlie Photos from Karl Pearson The 2010 season opened on the Ohio River at Madison, Indiana. The pits were bulging with 13 boats. The river was calm – at least, compared with recent years – and the sky was blue with no rain in the forecast. By the time the weekend was over, the hometown hydro, Oh Boy! Oberto, had notched a win before an enthusiastic crowd. Testing and Qualifying The first test session was delayed as patrol boats checked the river for debris. Next, a fire broke out at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Emergency crews rushed to the establishment that sits near the river shore, causing an additional delay. Finally, the river was open and boats took to the water. Oh Boy! Oberto, driven by Steve David, set the pace with a fast lap of 154.575. Dave Villwock had electrical problems with Spirit of Qatar, but just before qualifying ended he turned a lap of 153.152. The Formula team brought three boats to the race, U-5 Formula, U-7 Graham Trucking, and the back-up boat that they were “calling” 1 U-57 Formula, but still saying U-7. Jeff Bernard, in U-5, and J. Michael Kelly, in U-7, both had N2 violations and no official speeds were recorded. Jimmy Shane was slated to drive U-57, but the boat never made it to the water. J.W. Myers turned a lap of 150.360 in Peters & May. Behind him was rookie Cal Phipps aboard Miss DYC.

In December, Vanessa and Darrell Strong of Pasco, Wash- ington, announced their entry into the sport as owners with their purchase of the U-9 boat from Lori and Mike Jones. They also announced that they had hired Corey Peabody to handle the driving of that boat. In February, the Strongs made another giant step with their purchase of another top boat, the U-16 that was owned by Erick Ellstrom. They also announced the addition of a second driver to their team: J. Michael Kelly. Strong started his H1 Unlimited involvement in 2013 by sponsoring the Webster family’s U-22, which raced in the Tri-Cities that year and the following two years as PayneW- est Insurance. He then moved to the Go Fast, Turn Left rac- ing team, sponsoring the U-21 as PayneWest Insurance for the Tri-Cities races in 2016 and 2017. He sponsored it at four races during the 2018 campaign. The race team built a new boat for the 2019 season, which raced as Darrell Strong presents PayneWest Insurance at that year’s event in the Tri-Cities. Jim Caviezel portrayed the lead character Jim McCormick, a real-life veteran racer and boat owner who drove Miss Madison in 1966 and 1969–71, then raced his own boat until seriously injured some years later. Many of his actual seven-man pit crew, including Harry Volpi, Bobby Humphrey, and Tony Steinhardt, were also portrayed in the film, while Steinhardt himself appeared as a fan in a cameo. Significant as well is that Madison has the world’s only community owned unlimited hydroplane, Miss Madison. Madison, Indiana, on the Ohio River, has sponsored powerboat racing since 1911 and held an annual race called the Madison Regatta since 1929 though Madison has a population of only 12,000. Beginning in 1954, the race became affiliated with the American Power Boat Association, is held annually in July, and the Regatta maintains its place in the Unlimited Hydroplane American Power Boat Association series, whose races have included Seattle, Tri-Cities, Detroit, San Diego and Doha..

    MADISON REGATTA PREPARES TO KICK-OFF THE 2012 FESTIVITIES (www.madisonregatta.com) The weekend of July 6 - 8 marks the 62nd Anniversary of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing in Madison, Indiana and race fans will be here watching thirteen unlimited hydroplanes vie for the LUCAS OIL Indiana Governor’s Cup, the first stop on the Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Series schedule. Local fans are eagerly awaiting the battles among these thundering 200-mph-plus competitors to see whether the hometown team, Oh Boy! Oberto / Miss Madison, will defend their 2011 Indiana Governor’s Cup trophy, or will there be a new contender that races to the front of the pack. With so many teams within a couple of mph of each other, you never know who might be lifting the Lucas Oil Indiana Governor’s Cup trophy at the end of the weekend. Thirteen of the world’s fastest race boats are ready to race deck-to-deck along the Bill Cantrell Memorial Race Course with qualifying set for Friday, and multiple heats scheduled for Saturday and Sunday leading up to the coveted LUCAS OIL Indiana Governor’s Cup final heat set for 4:20pm on Sunday, July 8th. Madison is one of six race sites on the 2012 Air National Guard H1 Unlimited calendar. Testing and Qualifying occur on Friday, July 6th with the popular “Pole Position” Unlimited Qualifications set between 3:00pm – 5:00pm. Saturday, July 7th brings more testing in the morning with the first sets of heat racing starting at 1:30pm with more heat racing all day Sunday, July 8th, leading up to the final heat for the LUCAS OIL Indiana Governor’s Cup at 4:20 p.m.
