Built in 1932, the massive boat was created to defend the Harmsworth Trophy from an expected challenge by Lord Charles Wakefield’s newMiss England III and its driver, Kaye Don. Nearly 40 feet in length, just short of the maximum allowed by Harmsworth rules, the boat weighed about eight tons and was powered by four 12-cylinder Packard engines that together generated 6,400 horsepower. One eyewitness to its launching and first test run on the St. Clair River said, “It was epochal. That boat was writing the history of daring in the waters of that turquoise river. We came away speechless at the drama of it all.” Racing on Lake St. Clair, Gar Wood drove the boat to victory in both heats of the 1932 Harmsworth and later that month drove the boat through a mile course set on the St. Clair River and set a new world straightaway speed record of 124.86 mph. A year later, in a defense of the Harmsworth on the St. Clair River near Marine City, Michigan, Wood drove the boat to victory over Hubert Scott-Paine and his Miss Britain III. It was the last race the legendary Gar Wood would enter. In almost all cases, the driver or owner will receive a trophy or certificate indicating that the race has been won or a record has been established. A statistic is an unofficial achievement. The statistical rankings included in this publication were developed through the analysis of heat results and other statistical data. What is a race? The information in this Record Book includes the results of all “official races” that took place since 1922, which is when the Gold Cup class was established. It also includes Gold Cup races and some Harmsworth races that were held previous to 1922. To be counted among the 710 official races listed here, an event must meet two conditions: 1) at least three starters of the Unlimited-class, Gold Cup–class, the 725-class in Mississippi Valley Power Boat Association events, or equivalent; and 2) at least two heats of racing. The results of free-for-all events, for example, which were just one heat and were common during the years before World War II, are not counted in these records. Many exhibition races included several limited-class boats but only one or two Gold Cup–class boats and also wouldn’t be counted in these records. Who’s the driver? In the case where more than one person handled the steering wheel during an event that ended up being a victory for that boat, the person who drove the boat in the event’s last heat is given credit for the win.     February 2019 Calling the boat races. To the fans watching unlimiteds along the shore at many race sites, and to many who listen on radio, the voice of the unlimiteds is Brad Luce. Few announcers can describe the excitement of a deck-to-deck battle around the buoys like he can. But, the job of being the voice on the Public Address system and on the radio involves more than just describing race action. Luce explains: by Brad Luce he fraternity of hydroplane announcers and broad- casters is a small one. And, over the years, I have had Tthe good fortune of working with the very best within that fraternity, from Jim Hendrick to Jeff Ayler, and everyone in between.     FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews.

    PETERS & MAY USA AND VILLAGE OF ITASCA UNVEIL NEW U-11 HYDROPLANE Itasca, Illinois will be a hotbed of boat racing on Tuesday, June 28 th , when Peters & May USA and the U-11 Racing Group take over downtown’s Orchard Street to unveil the newly completed “Peters & May” hydroplane that will debut in the H1 Unlimited Air National Guard Race Series . Itasca is the corporate headquarters for Peters & May USA, the world-wide boat shipping company, and will be represented on-board the new boat when Mayor Jeff Pruyn applies the Village logo to the Peters & May hydroplane. The Village police department will also be on hand to display a special souped-up Subaru squad car, adding to the festivities scheduled from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. The new 26-foot Hydroplane, powered by a T-55 Lycoming helicopter turbine producing more than 2600 horsepower, will be on display with its race support truck along with race driver JW Myers . Myers and his racing crew will be available to sign autographs and answer questions about the boat, hydroplane racing and race safety, while Peters & May USA will provide snacks and give-a-ways for the children in attendance. The boat is painted in a bright red and silver and will be hard to miss on display across from the train station. The Peters & May hydroplane joins a fleet of boats that are often named “Miss” by their owners and sponsors. Championship boats like Miss Budweiser helped make the sport famous by achieving speeds of over 200 mph and throwing wakes that are several stories high.

    JUNE 2010 2010: Another Short, But Very Competitive Season The Swami Karl Pearson photo 1 During the decade of the nineties there were 97 Unlimited races or an average of 9.7 per season. A respectable number that had the sport venturing into new places like Honolulu, Milwaukee, Norfolk and Kansas City. Some sites stuck around for a few years but others did not. At year 2000 the sport settled back into the six old established sites, and in the aughts (or whatever you want to call them), there were a total of 63 races for an average of 6.3 per year. Every now and then a one time event would pop up with adventures to Valleyfield, St. Clair and Lake Havasu which had a two year run beginning in 1999. Clearly this is not a good trend if the sport intends to grow. What strikes me as strange is during that period in the nineties it always seemed like there were never enough boats to properly fill out the fields for those races. Now the opposite is true. The sport can bring 10-12 teams and a case could be made that half or more of them are capable of winning. Not just winning when the favorite breaks but out running the competition in a given heat when all is dialed in correctly. What is now needed is more than the 5 race schedule to showcase this increasing health in teams and competition. (As of press time Evansville, Ind. is not on the H1 schedule). Those competitive teams, as usual have been favorites for the last few years.
