Interview with Steve David
DECEMBER 2013 Interview with Steve David Part 2 by Craig Fjarlie Last month, in Part 1, Steve David talked about his early years in inboard classes, his entry into the unlimited ranks, boats he drove before hooking up with the Madison team, and his term as President of the American Power Boat Association. This month, in Part 2, he reminisces about the years with Karl Pearson photo Madison and offers comments about the state of boat racing – the unlimited class as well as the larger picture of APBA racing. The first portion of the conversation was recorded at Seafair on August 3, 2012. A follow-up was recorded at San Diego on September 13, 2013, and a final comment on September 15, 2013, as soon as his retirement became official. Craig Fjarlie asked the questions. You had a really scary spin-out at the start-finish line in Madison in 2005, with the old boat. Yeah, 2005, when we hit a submerged log and sheered the rudder. Spun violently to the left and thank heavens Muscatel was a little late for the start so when I spun he actually passed me. His roostertail hit our deck and brought me back down. And then I just missed the support craft that was in the center of the course. Yeah, that was a freak occurrence. You weren’t really hurt. No. Well, I did get that immediate slam to the right, but I had a good head basket. We went off in Detroit and actually, we were leading the final in Detroit and the U-2 with J. -

Thunderboat Throwback Thursday Norm Berg and Dave Knowlen -- the Norberg Custom Boats
Thunderboat Throwback Thursday Norm Berg and Dave Knowlen -- The Norberg Custom Boats. Bill Osborne Photo – SD 79-02 -- Used with permission A few months back, I received a private message from one of the regular contributors/commenters on the Diamond Cup Hydromanics Facebook site asking me to look into writing a piece about Tacoma’s Norm Berg and his brief, but highly successful, involvement in building unlimited hulls. I have to admit that the name Norm Berg meant little to me when the story idea was first suggested, but it didn’t take long to realize how important a place the man holds in the history of the piston era boats. I also learned that the credit for the success of Berg’s boats must also be extended to his collaborator, and that to do proper justice to the story of Berg’s boats, one had to also include the story of his close cohort in those endeavors, Mr. Dave Knowlen. My digging for facts on the partnership revealed that the two appear to have come from rather diverse backgrounds, but that they possessed highly developed skill sets that particularly complimented one another when it came to designing and building race boats. My sources show that Berg grew up as part of a commercial fishing family in the Puget Sound area and that as he grew into adulthood he became a skilled woodworker and boat building craftsman. Knowlen was educated as a mechanical engineer, eventually becoming part of the development team at the Boeing Company, guiding the designing and building of commercial aircraft while using advanced design principles and space-age materials. -

And Statistics
2021 HYDRO RECORD BOOK AND STATISTICS PUBLISHED BY THE UNLIMITED NEWSJOURNAL Gar Wood (left) sits at the steering wheel of his Miss America X and next to his long-time riding mechanic, Orlin Johnson. Built in 1932, the massive boat was created to defend the Harmsworth Trophy from an expected challenge by Lord Charles Wakefield’s newMiss England III and its driver, Kaye Don. Nearly 40 feet in length, just short of the maximum allowed by Harmsworth rules, the boat weighed about eight tons and was powered by four 12-cylinder Packard engines that together generated 6,400 horsepower. One eyewitness to its launching and first test run on the St. Clair River said, “It was epochal. That boat was writing the history of daring in the waters of that turquoise river. We came away speechless at the drama of it all.” Racing on Lake St. Clair, Gar Wood drove the boat to victory in both heats of the 1932 Harmsworth and later that month drove the boat through a mile course set on the St. Clair River and set a new world straightaway speed record of 124.86 mph. A year later, in a defense of the Harmsworth on the St. Clair River near Marine City, Michigan, Wood drove the boat to victory over Hubert Scott-Paine and his Miss Britain III. It was the last race the legendary Gar Wood would enter. Tri-Cities APBA Gold
AUGUST 2015 Tri-CitiesTri-Cities APBAAPBA GoldGold CupCup Oberto Snatches Victory from the Jaws of Defeat by Bill Osborne “That’s why you should keep racing right to the very end,” Jimmy Shane said after capturing an improbable win in the 2015 APBA Gold Cup. “I wasn’t aware of the penalty on Jean Theoret, although I knew he had crossed into the DMZ prior to the start. He was trying to take lane 1, but it was too tight. I saw him cut the apex buoy, so I radioed it into Jeff and he relayed the information to H1. My focus was on J. Michael. Jeff Bernard, my radioman, kept urging me to go after him. I knew it was close, so I ran as hard as I could and hoped for the best.” ~ Bill Osborne photo Jimmy Shane caught J. Michael Kelly and won by less than two seconds. On the water, Theoret was more than eight seconds ahead of Kelly and appeared to have won his second APBA Gold Cup until H1 officials reviewed the events surrounding the DMZ violation. As the boats milled during the five-minute period, Jean Theoret cut through the DMZ, but the call was under review until post-race video was reviewed. Erick Ellstrom noted afterwards. “H1 played us the video and it showed clearly that Jean violated the DMZ. We dominated the weekend only to lose by a rookie mistake.” ~ Lon Erickson photo For the fifth time in its fifty years of hosting unlimited hydroplane racing, the Tri Cities was awarded the rights to the APBA Gold Cup.
