These documents contain significant amounts of structured data, which is largely unavailable to tools and applications. When publishers can express this data more completely, and when tools can read it, a new world of user functionality becomes available, letting users transfer structured data between applications and web sites, and allowing browsing applications to improve the user experience: an event on a web page can be directly imported - 1 - How to Read this Document RDFa in XHTML: Syntax and Processing into a user’s desktop calendar; a license on a document can be detected so that users can be informed of their rights automatically; a photo’s creator, camera setting information, resolution, location and topic can be published as easily as the original photo itself, enabling structured search and sharing. -

Multimedia Foundations Glossary of Terms Chapter 7 – Web Design Absolute URL A path statement that includes the complete physical address of a file on the WWW, often beginning with the protocol http://. Alternative Text A short narrative description of a web-based image intended to convey the essence of its content for users with disabilities. ARPANET Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. The world’s first packet-switching network became operational in 1969. The predecessor of the global Internet. Attribute HTML syntax used to modify an HTML element (or tag). Usually occurs as a name-value pair, separated by "=". Background Image The image file source (usually a JPEG or GIF) that serves as the visual background for an HTML element. Block-Level Element HTML elements specifically designed to handle large chunks of information (e.g. paragraphs, lists, and list items). Body The main section of an HTML document containing information the user will see or code that directly affects its presentation. Browser Or Web browser. A software program designed for accessing HTML-based documents and presenting them on screen for viewing (e.g. Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari). Button An object or widget in a graphical user interface that performs an action when selected by the user. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) An external style sheet (a .css file) containing instructions for the physical appearance of HTML content on the screen. Character Reference Special character commands used in HTML that allow you to use symbols (a.k.a. glyphs) that are not part of the standard HTML character set, such as a copyright symbol © and quotation marks. -

05_096970 ch01.qxp 4/20/07 11:27 PM Page 3 1 Introducing Cascading Style Sheets Cascading style sheets is a language intended to simplify website design and development. Put simply, CSS handles the look and feel of a web page. With CSS, you can control the color of text, the style of fonts, the spacing between paragraphs, how columns are sized and laid out, what back- ground images or colors are used, as well as a variety of other visual effects. CSS was created in language that is easy to learn and understand, but it provides powerful control over the presentation of a document. Most commonly, CSS is combined with the markup languages HTML or XHTML. These markup languages contain the actual text you see in a web page — the hyperlinks, paragraphs, headings, lists, and tables — and are the glue of a web docu- ment. They contain the web page’s data, as well as the CSS document that contains information about what the web page should look like, and JavaScript, which is another language that pro- vides dynamic and interactive functionality. HTML and XHTML are very similar languages. In fact, for the majority of documents today, they are pretty much identical, although XHTML has some strict requirements about the type of syntax used. I discuss the differences between these two languages in detail in Chapter 2, and I also pro- vide a few simple examples of what each language looks like and how CSS comes together with the language to create a web page. ABSTRACT Vector graphics can be scaled without loss of quality, making them suitable for mobile image communication where a given graphics must be typically represented in high quality for a wide range of screen resolutions. One problem is that file size increases rapidly as content becomes more detailed, which can reduce response times and efficiency in mobile settings. Analog issues for large raster imagery have been overcome using progressive refinement schemes. Similar ideas have already been applied to vector graphics, but an implementation that is compliant to a major and widely adopted standard is still missing. In this publication we show how to provide progressive refinement schemes based on the extendable Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard. We propose two strategies: decomposition of the original SVG and incremental transmission using (1) several linked files and (2) element-wise streaming of a single file. The publication discusses how both strategies are employed in mobile image communication scenarios where the user can interactively define RoIs for prioritized image communication, and reports initial results we obtained from a prototypically implemented client/server setup. However, the Document Object Model (DOM) bridges the chasm and makes working with both XML on the back end and HTML on the front end possible and an effective tool. In this article, Brett McLaughlin introduces the Document Object Model, explains its use in Web pages, and starts to explore its usage from JavaScript. Like many Web programmers, you have probably worked with HTML. HTML is how programmers start to work on a Web page; HTML is often the last thing they do as they finish up an application or site, and tweak that last bit of placement, color, or style. And, just as common as using HTML is the misconception about what exactly happens to that HTML once it goes to a browser to render to the screen. Before I dive into what you might think happens -- and why it is probably wrong -- I want you need to be clear on the process involved in designing and serving Web pages: 1.
