For each species the original citation, English name, type locality, etymology of both scientific and English names, and approximate distribution are given. ARIZONA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ARIZONA WILDLIFE NOTEBOOK GARRY ROGERS Praise for Arizona Wildlife Notebook “Arizona Wildlife Notebook” by Garry Rogers is a comprehensive checklist of wildlife species existing in the State of Arizona. This notebook provides a brief description for each of eleven (11) groups of wildlife, conservation status of all extant species within that group in Arizona, alphabetical listing of species by common name, scientific names, and room for notes. “The Notebook is a statewide checklist, intended for use by wildlife watchers all over the state. As various individuals keep track of their personal observations of wildlife in their specific locality, the result will be a more selective checklist specific to that locale. Such information would be vitally useful to the State Wildlife Conservation Department, as well as to other local agencies and private wildlife watching groups. “This is a very well-documented snapshot of the status of wildlife species – from bugs to bats – in the State of Arizona. Much of it should be relevant to neighboring states, as well, with a bit of fine-tuning to accommodate additions and deletions to the list. “As a retired Wildlife Biologist, I have to say Rogers’ book is perhaps the simplest to understand, yet most comprehensive in terms of factual information, that I have ever had occasion to peruse. This book should become the default checklist for Arizona’s various state, federal and local conservation agencies, and the basis for developing accurate local inventories by private enthusiasts as well as public agencies. "Arizona Wildlife Notebook" provides a superb starting point for neighboring states who may wish to emulate Garry Rogers’ excellent handiwork. -
Rapid Colonization by Dragonflies in a New Effluent-Dependent

Bogan1, Drew Eppehimer1, Hamdhani Hamdhani1,2 and Kelsey Hollien1 1 School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA 2 Department of Aquatic Resources Management, University of Mulawarman, Samarinda, Indonesia ABSTRACT Background: Aquatic ecosystems are greatly altered by urban development, including the complete loss of natural habitat due to water diversions or channel burial. However, novel freshwater habitats also are created in cities, such as effluent-dependent streams that rely on treated wastewater for flow. It is unclear how diverse these novel ecosystems are, or how quickly aquatic species are able to colonize them. In this study, we (1) quantify odonate (Insecta, Odonata) colonization of a novel effluent-dependent river reach, (2) examine how drying events affect odonates in these novel habitats, and (3) explore whether effluent-dependent streams can support diverse odonate assemblages. Methods: We conducted monthly odonate surveys at three sites along the Santa Cruz River (Tucson, AZ, USA) between June 2019 and May 2020. One site was in a long-established effluent-dependent reach (flowing since the 1970s) that served as a reference site and two sites were in a newly-established reach that began flowing on June 24, 2019 (it was previously dry). We compared odonate species richness, assemblage composition, and colonization patterns across these reaches, and examined how these factors responded to flow cessation events in the new reach. Results: Seven odonate species were observed at the study sites in the new Submitted 26 May 2020 reach within hours of flow initiation, and species rapidly continued to arrive Accepted 11 August 2020 thereafter. -

The San Bernardino Ciénega (marshy wetland) was historically the most extensive wetland in the region, and forms an important migratory link between Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental and the Rocky Mountains to the north. The extensive and dependable wetlands in this area historically provided habitat for eight species of fish, nearly one-fourth of the species native to Arizona. -

Less well known are the aquatic larvae of these insects. Odonates are most abundant and diverse in lentic (standing) waters, but many species also occur in lotic (flowing) waters. All adult and larval odonates are predatory. Most Odonata larvae are sit-and-wait predators, which means they remain motionless until an insect or small fish approaches the larva. When a prey item comes close, the larva rapidly extends its labium (lower lip) and grasps the prey with its jaw-like palps. The adults feed on arthropods such as other insects (including other dragonflies and damselflies) and spiders. Adult odonates, especially dragonflies, are strong fliers and catch much of their prey on the wing. Odonata Morphology Odonate larvae possess a characteristic labium (lower lip), which forms an extendable mask-like or scoop-like appendage that covers other mouthparts. Mature larvae possess two pairs of wing pads. The legs of odonates terminate in two claws. Odonata can be divided into two distinct groups or suborders: 1) Dragonflies (Anisoptera) and 2) Damselflies (Zygoptera). Damselfly larvae are usually more slender than dragonflies and their abdomen terminates in three caudal filaments (gills) resembling leaves (Figure 5.1). Dragonflies are much more robust with an abdomen terminating in five points consisting of a pair of cerci, a pair of paraprocts, and a single epiproct (Figure 5.3, Figure 5.2). -

RESUMEN Con el fin de integrar el conocimiento sobre el orden Odonata en Panamá, se realizó una revisión de la literatura que incluyeran descripciones y registros tanto de adultos como de larvas. Para conocer la distribución del orden en Panamá, se recopiló la información a nivel de género, a partir del análisis de literatura disponible en revistas científicas, además de la revisión del material depositado en la CoZEM. Con base en esta información logramos enlistar 215 especies de odonatos distribuidos en trece familias, 35 especies presentan localidad tipo. Las contribuciones más antiguas registradas sobre especies de odonatos se dieron en la década de 1890-1899, en la cual se reportaron 16 especies. Se encontró información sobre la fauna de odonatos en 28 de las 52 cuencas del país, la cuenca en donde se ha dado la mayor cantidad de reportes de odonatos es la del Canal de Panamá con 177 especies distribuidas en 70 géneros.
