Canada A b s t r a c t Animal communication signals can be highly elaborate, and researchers have long sought explanations for their evolutionary origins. Animal communication theory holds that many signals evolved from non-signalling behaviours through the process of ritualization. Empirical evidence for ritualization is limited, as it is necessary to examine living relatives with varying degrees of signal evolution within a phylogenetic framework. I examined the origins of vibratory signals in Drepanidae caterpillars using comparative and molecular phylogenetic methods. I demonstrated that variation exists in morphology of signalling structures, general life-history characteristics related to signalling, and territorial behaviour by studying morphology in 19 species and behaviour in 11 species. I developed a molecular phylogeny of the Drepanidae onto which these characters could be mapped to test specific hypotheses on to the origin of signalling. These hypotheses included: 1) anal scraping derives from crawling towards an intruder; and 2) mandible scraping derives from lateral head hitting. My results support these hypotheses based on morphological, behavioural and kinematic data, thereby providing strong empirical evidence for the origins of communication signals. My thesis also demonstrates that vibratory communication is widespread and variable in this group of caterpillars, adding much needed information on this mode of communication in larval insects. Finally, I provide several lines of evidence to suggest that larvae that invest in leaf shelters defend these shelters from conspecifics using vibratory communication, which contributes to a growing body of information on this topic in caterpillars. Introduction The family Epicopeiidae embraces several medium- to large-sized diurnal moths across the Oriental and the Palaearctic regions. They are usually regarded as mimic to a certain species of Papilionidae, Danainae or bearing aposematic coloration. In Taiwan, two species of Epicopeiidae, EIPicopeia mencia Moore, 1874, and E. hainesii matsumuvai Okano, 1973, have hitherto been recognized. wnile the early stages of the same species from Japan and China have been described or illustrated, the life history of this family from Taiwan has remained unknown to date. In early May 1992, one of us, Yen, was able to collect larvae and eggs of E, mencia from Ulmus Parvijblia Jacq. (Ulmaceae) at Huei-Sen Forests, Nantou Co. and Shanping, Kaohsiung Co,, Taiwan, respectively. They were subsequently brought to the laboratory of Department of.Entomology. Rearing was conducted at room temperatures, Eggs were put into a small transparent plastic bag ; hatched larvae were reared in a 15 × 8 × 20 cm plastic case with an abundant supply of leaves of the hostplant; pupae were left in the case to emerge; hibernate pupae were mantained at 100C.

The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.

In a previous paper (YOSHIDA 1980), seasonal fluctuations of the moth community and the predominant species were compared among the four· stands. As a second report the present paper deals with soml charactelistics on the faunal make-up. Before going further, the author wishes to express his sincere thanks to Mr. Masanori J. The differential features from the next similar species are presented. This is the first record of this genus from Laos. C. gelidata, C. nana, C.splendens and C. heinzhuebneri sp. n. are comparetively treated. Die Unterscheidungsmerkmale zu den nächsten ähnlichen Arten werden erläutert. Es ist der erste Nachweis einer Art dieser Gattung aus Laos. Die ähnlichen Arten dieser Gattung C. gelidata, C. nana, C. splendens und C. heinzhuebneri sp. n. werden vergleichend abgehandelt. Introduction Drepanidae (hook tip moths) are a relatively small, and well known family. Most of the species occur in South-East Asia with about 400 species in the Oriental region (BUCHSBAUM 2000, 2003, BUCHSBAUM & MILLER 2002, HEPPNER 1991). The Siamese Subregion, also called Indo-Burmese or Indo-Chinese region is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world (BROOKS et. al. 2002, MITTERMEIER et al. 1998, MYERS et al. 2000, SEDLAG 1984, 1995).
