C ONSERVATION RECOMMENDATIONS 155 iii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Biotic surveys and a comprehensive literature review were undertaken to improve our knowledge of the biodiversity of Bioko and mainland Equatorial Guinea. Bird and mammal surveys were conducted on the mainland, and herpetological and arthropod surveys on Bioko, providing new information on species distributions and abundance. On the mainland, five areas within the proposed preserve system for Equatorial Guinea; Reserva Natural de Rio Campo, Parque Nacional de Los Altos de Nsork, Parque Nacional de Monte Alen (including Montes Mitra), and Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni, were examined. On Bioko, the two proposed reserve areas, Parque Nacional de Pico Basilé Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba, as well as some lowland areas near Luba were examined. Additionally, genetic data were gathered for birds, and combined with previous data from Cameroon, to assess patterns of genetic differentiation within and across mountains in Cameroon and Bioko. We recorded only one species of bird (Malimbus scutatus) that had not been previously reported for mainland Equatorial Guinea, and no new mammals. However, valuable new information on bird and mammal distributions within Rio Muni are presented. In addition, several species and one genus of amphibians were recorded on Bioko for the first time. Approximately a third of the arthropods, including 372 species of spiders were previously unrecorded, and many are unidentifiable from the literature and may be new species. At least three endemic species of Carabid beetles were also discovered. Conservation implications are discussed in each chapter, and in a separate section (Part V) devoted to conservation recommendations. Conservation actions we recommend include: 1) Maximize protection of regions with high numbers of endemic species (Mountains/Bioko) 2) Preserve elevational gradients whenever possible 3) Create a network of preserves representing different habitat types and climatic zones, as proposed by C.U.R.E.F. 4) Increase conservation education and develop sustainable alternatives to hunting and logging. Thirteen areas have been proposed for conservation by Proyecto Conservacion Utilizacion Racional de los Ecosystemas Forestales des Guinea Equatorial (C.U.R.E.F.). These include two on Bioko, Parque Nacional de Pico Basilé and Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba; Nine on the mainland, Parque Nacional de Monte Alen (including Montes Mitra), Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni, Parque Nacional de Los Altos de Nsork, Reserva Natural de Rio Campo, Reserva Natural de Monte Timeline, Monumento Natural de Piedra Bere, Monumento Natural de Piedra Nzas, Reserva Natural de Punta Llende, Reserva Científica de Playa Nendyi; one comprised of offshore islands, Reserva Natural de Corisco y Elobeyes; and Reserva Natural de Annobon, a small oceanic island. Pico Basilé and Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba cover a range of habitats including lowland rainforest, montane and mossy forest, forest, high elevation shrub formation, and subalpine meadows. The island is regionally important because of its genetic uniquenes and high levels of endemism. The island's one endemic bird, Speirops brunneus, is found only on Pico Basilé, and three species of flightless Carabid beetles discovered there are likely to be endemic. The area is threatened by hunting and selective logging. Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba would preserve a rainforest gradient from sea level to 2260m, rivaled only by that found on Mt. Cameroon, which is threatened by considerable population pressure. Caldera de Luba is home to seven primate species, four of which are endemic subspecies, and four of which are listed as endangered by IUCN. Primate densities in this area are among the highest recorded anywhere in Africa. 1 However, more recent surveys indicate significant declines in primate populations due to hunting. On the mainland, a number of conservation areas are proposed that would protect a variety of habitats. Parque Nacional de Monte Alen (including Montes Mitra), would, in conjunction with Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni preserve a potentially important forested elevational gradient for species that undergo seasonal migrations or nomadic movements. The area harbors fifteen species of primates, including several which are vulnerable or endangered. Monte Alen proper is the only area in Equatorial Guinea which has formal protection (there is no hunting or gathering allowed in the park), and is the most well studied area on the mainland. Montes Mitra is a proposed extension of Monte Alen, but logging concessions have been granted within the proposed conservation area, which, together with the bushmeat industry, represent a primary threat to the preservation of an intact elevational gradient. Reserva Natural de Rio Campo will likely be one of the more difficult areas to protect, in that it is bisected by roads, and elephant and buffalo populations have reportedly already suffered from government intervention to protect crops of the local inhabitants. Nonetheless, there are some sound reasons for pursuing some level of conservation here, and the possibility of connecting this area with Cameroon’s Rio Campo Reserve, adds to its conservation value. Parque Nacional de Los Altos de Nsork has only a sparse human population around its perimeter, and has poor access to markets. Nsork is the only area (among Nsork, Rio Campo, and Montes Mitra) where we encountered sign of all three of the large primates, Gorilla, Mandrill and Chimpanzee, and the lack of access to markets may, in part, account for this. Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni contains the largest, best preserved expanse of mangroves in the country. The area is sparsely populated and has important fisheries. The area is rich in aquatic avifauna and contains prime habitat for the manatee. Reserva Natural de Monte Temelon, Monumento Natural de Piedra Bere, and Monumento Natural de Piedra Nzas are characterized by the presence of inselbergs surrounded by well-preserved forest. These spectacular rocky formations may host endemic arthropods and herpetofauna due to their high degree of isolation, and constitute a potential ecotourist destination. Reserva Natural de Punta Llende is part of the coastal savanna/rainforest mosaic. The savanna areas include birds species found nowhere else in the country and further surveys and research are needed. Reserva Científica de Playa Nendyi includes isolated turtle nesting beaches with associated marine habitat. Additionally, two other offshore areas, Reserva Natural de Corisco y Elobeyes and Annobon are proposed for protection. Reserva Natural de Corisco y Elobeyes includes several offshore islands with important marine bird colonies, and associated marine habitat providing feeding grounds for marine turtles. Reserva Natural de Annobon, an oceanic with its associated marine habitat, is rich in animal and plant endemics, and coral reefs. It is thought to have originated from Phyrgia in Asia Minor. In Europe it is rarely invasive, it is even used as an ornamental plant, but everywhere else can be a major problem. It does have its uses; thatching, making arrows, youngsters eat it and it can be dried and ground into a fine powder that, when moistened, can be toasted like marsh mallows. In Egypt it is used for making a flute-like musical instrument, maybe that‟s why another name here in South Africa is Fluitjiesriet. Its most important use is for bioremediation where excess nutrients and pollutants are removed from dirty water and sewage pond waste water by bacterial action on the Phragmites roots and leaf litter. The downside is that it is highly invasive WoF operatives hard at work plant that crowds-out other wetland plant species reducing overall plant, animal and bird diversity. It can spread at the rate of 5m per year from horizontal runners, rhizomes up to 10m long that produce a new shoot every 300mm. It is allelopathic i.e. it releases toxins from its roots that stop the growth of other plants. It out-competes native plants for nutrients, water and sunlight. The outcome – a 3m plus tall, handsome plant that forms a deceptively beautiful monoculture! Phragmites is difficult to control and impossible to eradicate entirely.

Dowsett Received 16 December 2014 Summary.—This paper reviews the distribution of birds in Nigeria that were not treated in detail in the most recent national avifauna (Elgood et al. 1994). It clarifies certain range limits, and recommends the addition to the Nigerian list of four species (African Piculet Verreauxia africana, White-tailed Lark Mirafra albicauda, Western Black-headed Batis Batis erlangeri and Velvet-mantled Drongo Dicrurus modestus) and the deletion (in the absence of satisfactory documentation) of six others (Olive Ibis Bostrychia olivacea, Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens, Richard’s Pipit Anthus richardi, Little Grey Flycatcher Muscicapa epulata, Ussher’s Flycatcher M. ussheri and Rufous-winged Illadopsis Illadopsis rufescens). Recent research in West Africa has demonstrated the need to clarify the distributions of several bird species in Nigeria. I have re-examined much of the literature relating to the country, analysed the (largely unpublished) collection made by Boyd Alexander there in 1904–05 (in the Natural History Museum, Tring; NHMUK), and have reviewed the data available in the light of our own field work in Ghana (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2014), Togo (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2011a) and neighbouring Benin (Dowsett & Dowsett- Lemaire 2011, Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2009, 2010, 2011b). The northern or southern localities of species with limited ranges in Nigeria were not always detailed by Elgood et al. (1994), although such information is essential for understanding distribution patterns and future changes. For many Guineo-Congolian forest species their northern limit in West Africa lies on the escarpment of the Jos Plateau, especially Nindam Forest Reserve, Kagoro.

Roadside birds seen during the journey consisted of Pied Crow, Helmeted Guineafowl, Yellow-billed Kite, Knob-billed Duck, White- browed Sparrow-weaver, Meve’s Starling and Hamerkop. We made a short birding stop in some well-developed mopane woodland where we recorded Southern Carmine and Blue-cheeked Bee- eaters, Red-breasted Swallow, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Brubru and White-crested Helmet- Shrike. Our lodge was situated along a quiet backwater of the Zambezi River and late afternoon birding produced good sightings of Southern Masked-Weaver, Holub’s Golden Weaver, African Jacana, African Openbill, White-faced Duck, Wire-tailed Swallow, White-winged Tern, while Little Rush Warbler and Luapula Cisticola called from the reed beds. Days 2 - 3: We were woken the next morning by the melodious calls of White-browed Robin-Chats emanating from the lush riverine vegetation and gardens of the lodge. Breakfast was served on a wooden deck overlooking the river and we soon got onto a Slaty Egret foraging along the shore, while the antics of Tilapia around their nesting circles in the river was fascinating to watch. The morning was alive with birds and our list was growing quickly with additions such as Red- billed Francolin, Swamp Boubou, Southern Grey- headed Sparrow, African Mourning Dove, Common Waxbill, nesting African Paradise-Flycatcher, Southern Brown-throated Weaver, Brown and Red- billed Firefinch, White- browed and Coppery-tailed Coucal, African Green Pigeon and Diderik Cuckoo.

    Uganda Birds & Gorillas Trip Report 18th July to 5th August 2011 Green-breasted Pitta by Chris Goodie Trip Report Compiled by Tour Leader: David Hoddinott Tour Summary Uganda is not called the “pearl of Africa” for nothing. This country has a remarkable diversity of fauna and flora including a wonderful array of habitats, butterflies, primates and, most importantly, birds. In fact it vies with Ecuador and Columbia as being one of the birdiest countries in the World – this tiny Trip Report - RBT Uganda 2011 2 nation (approximately the size of Great Britain) has over 1000 species of birds! Uganda’s habitats vary incredibly from the vast Lake Victoria, the Nile, wetlands, mixed bushveld, grassland, broad-leaved woodland, mid-altitude and highland forest to the endemic rich forests around the Albertine Rift. With an average elevation over 1000m, it generally does not get too hot and therefore birds are active throughout the day. As a result, it seems that around every corner and in every habitat birds abound. A typical scenario whilst driving and conversing in the vehicle is being constantly interrupted because the guide shouts “Stop! There’s an interesting bird on the left”; and whilst stopped, “Oh, there’s another great bird on the right!” This happens repeatedly and if one had to stop for every species seen each day, one would arrive well after dark at one’s intended destination. Fortunately, however, most species are reasonably common here, unlike those tricky South American destinations, and this is great as it allows multiple opportunities to see them and also get to enjoy many species on several occasions.

With an itinerary set in one of South Africa’s premier birding provinces, the Limpopo Province, we were getting ready for a birding extravaganza. The forests of Magoebaskloof would be our first stop, spending a day and a half in the area and targeting forest special after forest special as well as tricky range-restricted species such as Short-clawed Lark and Gurney’s Sugarbird. Afterwards we would descend the eastern escarpment and head into Kruger National Park, where we would make our way to the northern sections. These included Punda Maria, Pafuri, and the Makuleke Concession – a mouthwatering birding itinerary that was sure to deliver. A pair of Woodland Kingfishers in the fever tree forest along the Limpopo River Detailed Report Day 1, 24th February 2019 – Transfer to Magoebaskloof We set out from Johannesburg after breakfast on a clear Sunday morning. The drive to Polokwane took us just over three hours. A number of birds along the way started our trip list; these included Hadada Ibis, Yellow-billed Kite, Southern Black Flycatcher, Village Weaver, and a few brilliant European Bee-eaters.

    A CLASSIFICATION OF THE RALLIDAE STARRY L. OLSON HE family Rallidae, containing over 150 living or recently extinct species T and having one of the widest distributions of any family of terrestrial vertebrates, has, in proportion to its size and interest, received less study than perhaps any other major group of birds. The only two attempts at a classifi- cation of all of the recent rallid genera are those of Sharpe (1894) and Peters (1934). Although each of these lists has some merit, neither is satisfactory in reflecting relationships between the genera and both often separate closely related groups. In the past, no attempt has been made to identify the more primitive members of the Rallidae or to illuminate evolutionary trends in the family. Lists almost invariably begin with the genus Rdus which is actually one of the most specialized genera of the family and does not represent an ancestral or primitive stock. One of the difficulties of rallid taxonomy arises from the relative homo- geneity of the family, rails for the most part being rather generalized birds with few groups having morphological modifications that clearly define them. As a consequence, particularly well-marked genera have been elevated to subfamily rank on the basis of characters that in more diverse families would not be considered as significant. Another weakness of former classifications of the family arose from what Mayr (194933) referred to as the “instability of the morphology of rails.” This “instability of morphology,” while seeming to belie what I have just said about homogeneity, refers only to the characteristics associated with flightlessness-a condition that appears with great regularity in island rails and which has evolved many times.

Weather was characterized by high cloud cover and haze, in part from Harmattan winds that blow from the northeast and carry particulates from the Sahara Desert. Temperatures were relatively pleasant as a result, and precipitation was almost nonexistent. Everyone stayed healthy, the AC on the bus functioned perfectly, the tropical fruits (i.e., bananas, mangos, papayas, and pineapples) that Paul and Jackson obtained from roadside sellers were exquisite and perfectly ripe, the meals and lodgings were passable, and the jokes from Jeff tolerable, for the most part. We detected 380 species of birds, including some that were heard but not seen. We did especially well with kingfishers, bee-eaters, greenbuls, and sunbirds. We observed 28 species of diurnal raptors, which is not a large number for this part of the world, but everyone was happy with the wonderful looks we obtained of species such as African Harrier-Hawk, African Cuckoo-Hawk, Hooded Vulture, White-headed Vulture, Bat Hawk (pair at nest!), Long-tailed Hawk, Red-chested Goshawk, Grasshopper Buzzard, African Hobby, and Lanner Falcon.

Our flight in from the UK was delayed so no time for any real birding on this first day of our “Chilled Birding Tour”. Our local guide Tijan and our ground crew met us at the airport. We piled into Tijan’s well used minibus as Little Swifts and Yellow-billed Kites flew above us. A short drive took us to our lovely small boutique hotel complete with pool and lovely private gardens, we were going to enjoy staying here. Having settled in we all met up for a pre-dinner drink in the warmth of an African evening. The food was delicious, and we chatted excitedly about the birds that lay ahead on this nine- day trip to The Gambia, the first time in West Africa for all our guests. At first light we were exploring the gardens of the hotel and enjoying the warmth after leaving the chilly UK behind. Both Red-eyed and Laughing Doves were easy to see and a flash of colour announced the arrival of our first Beautiful Sunbird, this tiny gem certainly lived up to its name! A bird flew in landing in a fig tree and again our jaws dropped, a Yellow-crowned Gonolek what a beauty! Shocking red below, black above with a daffodil yellow crown, we were loving Gambian birds already.
