As we all know that is a very big country and to maintain or govern a big nation is a difficult task. Therefore India has been divided into states and union territories in order to maintain effective administration. The states of our country is taken care by the State Government. Whereas the union territories are governed by the Central Government.

There are 28 States and 9 Union Territories in India.
