On March 26, 2013, legendary punk/thrash icons SUICIDAL TENDENCIES will release their first new music in over 13 years. The band’s upcoming full-length, entitled 13, will be released via Suicidal Records. Produced by Mike Muir and Paul Northfield (Rush, Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, Ozzy Osbourne, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Infectious Grooves), the release of 13 marks the 30th anniversary of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

It’s the fall of 1975, and Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby has flown a virtually unknown Jaco from Ft. Lauderdale to New York to record his debut with jazz luminaries Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, Wayne Shorter, and Lenny White. The product of those sessions, the soulful, eclectic stunner simply titled Jaco Pastorius, would shake the bass world to its foundations, of course, but the album cover—with its bold lettering across a no-nonsense black & white portrait by Don Hunstein—might suggest that the unsmiling young maestro was overly serious about making a good first impression. That wasn’t true at all. “It was wild,” says Return To Forever drummer Lenny White of the sessions in October 1975. “Basically, we would play, do a take, and go outside and play basketball.” “We could have done it on bicycles with microphones, and he would have played it perfectly,” remembers producer Colomby, still impressed four decades later. For the past several years he’s been known in the industry as one of the most creative and innovative bass players in the world, and his virtuosity on the instrument has been a highly sought after commodity by a rather interesting mix of artists. As a teenager he replaced the legendary Robert Trujillo (now with Metallica) in the punk/metal band Suicidal Tendencies, and he would go on to record with Erykah Badu, as well as with the critically acclaimed experimental artist known as Flying Lotus. It gets even more interesting on the performance side, with stages having been shared the likes of Snoop Dog, Stanley Clarke and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Odd mix, but tasty. Equally impressive is his pedigree. His grandparents and mother were musicians, his father played drums for Diana Ross, The Temptations and Gladys Knight, and his brother, Ron, is a Grammy Award-winning drummer, composer and producer. Fun Fact: His Thundercat moniker is inspired by his obsession for the animated series Thundercats. What draws me to Thundercat, other than his obvious level of talent, is the inability to define him as any particular kind of recording artist. Funk, soul, prog rock, jazz fusion, thrash metal, punk, hip hop, experimental…They’ve all been a part of his journey thus far, and I have a feeling that he might just be responsible for inventing one or two new genres himself, before it’s all said and done.

    Hellfest 2017 – Saturday After a dozen of fresh croissants with a addition of a cup of coffee, I started to plan my second day in hell, and I realized few things. Firstly, yesterday I decided I crossed the healthy limit of “seen” bands. Secondly, If I try to beat yesterday’s record, then the third day I can easily spend in emergency department. Thirdly, getting the overwhelming heat coming from above, I surely should cover my head. I promised myself that today won’t be only a battle for entry on the most viewed concerts, but also an escape from daily life. For good starters I planned to verify the good reputation of The Dead Daisies. Their members are a mix of musicians from bands like Motley Crue, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and even Billy Idol and Dio. Well, my a bit fatigued colleagues managed to get ready shortly before Phill Campbell and The Bastard Sons performance. Scene veteran Phill, with a company of youngsters played a sentimental but good, strong rock-and-roll concert. Campbell was a guitarist in Motorhead since 1984, until the death of Lemmy’s, so “using” his repertoire is a serious commercial move. The heritage of Motorhead will surely catch the attention of their long die-hard fans, but nonetheless it was an honest and true concert. Besides Campbell, his three sons are playing – Todd, Dane and Tyla. The vocalist of the band, Neil Starr, who was clearly under the jitters, still managed to convincingly play hits like “Killed By Death” and “Ace Of Spades”. There were also few surprises.
