Gene Watson Fan Club Newsletter Gene Watson Fan Club Newsletter Volume 63 July August, 2019 Hi Friends - It’s hard to believe we’re talking about the end of summer and the kids are already back in school. The days just seem to fly by. We certainly have put a few miles on the bus this summer and have enjoyed seeing as many of you as we can. We get a lot of calls and emails asking us to come to various cities and trust me, we want to get there. If you want to request your local places to book us, just give them the name of our agent, Rob Battle. Rob’s phone number is 615-368-7433 and his email is [email protected]. Rob does a great job getting us around the country but he’ll be glad to hear from anyone interested. In this newsletter you’ll see we packed as many exciting shows in as we could from performing at Willie’s Picnic on July 4th to the Great Texas Balloon Race in Longview, TX. I’ve done my best to keep Moe Bandy at arm’s length but it looks like Moe’s going to join me and Ms. Jeannie Seely September 20th at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center in Midland, TX. I appreciate your under- standing if you read there was a bull in the parking lot or any such thing. Be- tween him and Rhonda, you just never know what’s going to happen onstage. I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter and I look forward to seeing you out on the road. All the best, On Stage at the Great Texas Balloon Race! Taping at Larry’s Country Diner! Gene Watson Fan Club Newsletter March/April 2014 Volume 34 Hi Friends- I’m happy to say we have a new album coming out June 10th titled “My Heroes Have Always Been Country”. Although it will be in select stores, as you are aware by now, most of the big “box” stores as they call them, don’t carry a whole lot of CDs anymore and certainly not much Classic Country. You can also buy it online at places Here Comes My Baby Back like Amazon, I-Tunes or at my store at Again www.GeneWatsonMusic.com . This is a collection of some of Don’t You Believe Her my favorite classic country songs that you’ll know by greats like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Dottie West and Slide Off Of Your Satin Sheets more. I can’t wait for you to hear it and hope you like it as Make The World Go Away much as I do. In other news, we’re going to Alaska in July! • Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011
Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.
