Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -

Avian Biol. 37: 260Á/272 The Neotropical ovenbirds (Furnariidae) form an extraordinary morphologically and ecologically diverse passerine radiation, which includes many examples of species that are superficially similar to other passerine birds as a resulting from their adaptations to similar lifestyles. The ovenbirds further exhibits a truly remarkable variation in nest types, arguably approaching that found in the entire passerine clade. Herein we present a genus-level phylogeny of ovenbirds based on both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA including a more complete taxon sampling than in previous molecular studies of the group. The phylogenetic results are in good agreement with earlier molecular studies of ovenbirds, and supports the suggestion that Geositta and Sclerurus form the sister clade to both core-ovenbirds and woodcreepers. Within the core-ovenbirds several relationships that are incongruent with traditional classifications are suggested. Among other things, the philydorine ovenbirds are found to be non-monophyletic. The mapping of principal nesting strategies onto the molecular phylogeny suggests cavity nesting to be plesiomorphic within the ovenbirdÁ/woodcreeper radiation. It is also suggested that the shift from cavity nesting to building vegetative nests is likely to have happened at least three times during the evolution of the group. -

We hy- pothesizednest homologies for 168species in 41 genera(ca. 70% of all speciesand genera) and codedthem as 24 derivedcharacters. Forty-eight most-parsimonious trees (41 steps,CI = 0.98, RC = 0.97) resultedfrom a parsimonyanalysis of the equallyweighted characters using PAUP,with the Dendrocolaptidaeand Formicarioideaas successiveoutgroups. The strict-consensustopology based on thesetrees contained 15 cladesrepresenting both tra- ditionaltaxa and novelphylogenetic groupings. Montane and submontane forest patches in the state of Bahia, Brazil, are among the few large and preserved Atlantic Forests remnants. They are strongholds of an almost complete elevational gradient, which harbor both lowland and highland bird taxa. Despite being considered a biodiversity hotspot, few ornithologists have surveyed these forests, especially along elevational gradients. Here we compile bird records acquired from systematic surveys and random observations carried out since the 1980s in a 7,500 ha private protected area: Serra Bonita private reserve. We recorded 368 species, of which 143 are Atlantic Forest endemic taxa. -

We experienced the amazing termitaria-covered landscape of Emas National Park, where participant Rick Thompson got this evocative image, including two Aplomado Falcons, and a Pampas Deer. Brazil is a big place, and it is home to a wide variety of biomes. Among its most famous are the Amazon and the Pantanal, both occupy huge areas and have their respective hydrologies to thank for their existence. In addition to these are drier regions that cut the humid Amazon from the humid Atlantic Forest, this is known as the “Dry Diagonal,” home to the grasslands we observed at Emas, the chapada de Cipo, and farther afield, the Chaco, Pampas, and Caatinga. We were able to dip our toes into several of these incredible features, beginning with the Pantanal, one of the world’s great wetlands, and home to a wide array of animals, fish, birds, and other organisms. In addition to daytime outings to enjoy the birdlife and see several of the habitats of the region (seasonally flooded grasslands, gallery forest, deciduous woodlands, and open country that does not flood), we were able to see a wide array of mammals during several nocturnal outings, culminating in such wonderful results as seeing multiple big cats (up to three Ocelots and a Jaguar on one night!), foxes, skunks, raccoons, Giant Anteaters, and others. To have such luck as this in the Americas is something special! Our bird list from the region included such memorable events as seeing an active Jabiru nest, arriving at our lodging at Aguape to a crowd of Hyacinth Macaws, as well as enjoying watching the antics of their cousins the Blue-and-yellow Macaws. -

Assessing Bird Migrations Verônica Fernandes Gama Master of Philosophy, Remote Sensing Bachelor of Biological Sciences (Honours) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 School of Biological Sciences Abstract Birds perform many types of migratory movements that vary remarkably both geographically and between taxa. Nevertheless, nomenclature and definitions of avian migrations are often not used consistently in the published literature, and the amount of information available varies widely between taxa. Although comprehensive global lists of migrants exist, these data oversimplify the breadth of types of avian movements, as species are classified into just a few broad classes of movements. A key knowledge gap exists in the literature concerning irregular, small-magnitude migrations, such as irruptive and nomadic, which have been little-studied compared with regular, long-distance, to-and- fro migrations. The inconsistency in the literature, oversimplification of migration categories in lists of migrants, and underestimation of the scope of avian migration types may hamper the use of available information on avian migrations in conservation decisions, extinction risk assessments and scientific research. In order to make sound conservation decisions, understanding species migratory movements is key, because migrants demand coordinated management strategies where protection must be achieved over a network of sites. In extinction risk assessments, the threatened status of migrants and non-migrants is assessed differently in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, and the threatened status of migrants could be underestimated if information regarding their movements is inadequate. In scientific research, statistical techniques used to summarise relationships between species traits and other variables are data sensitive, and thus require accurate and precise data on species migratory movements to produce more reliable results. -

Seeing fauna highly adapted to challenging conditions (flooded forest, heavy downpours, competition, and lack of fruits for a period of the year) was our reward for our daily efforts to portray in our checklists the amazing richness of this, the largest biome on earth. As this tour offers contrasting habitats, we started with a full day of birding in the vicinity of Lima, where rich oceanic waters allowed views of tens of thousands of Franklin’s Gulls perched on the electric wires along the costanera road. A visit to beach contiguous to Pantanos de Villa gave us the opportunity see shorebirds, Black Skimmers (a migrant from the Amazon region), teals, cormorants, and pelicans at length. We also spent time exploring a trail crossing the reeds and enjoyed wonderful views of the Many-colored Rush-Tyrant and a nesting pair of the secretive Wren-like Rushbird. Later, we drove to the picturesque town of Pucusana, and a magical boat trip gave us the opportunity to get spectacular views of the Humboldt Penguin, as well as Guanay and Red-legged cormorants, a Peregrine Falcon, and thousands of Peruvian Victor Emanuel Nature Tours 2 Amazon River Cruise, 2020 Boobies. -

Av. Universidad, Cerro Colorado, Cumaná. [email protected] Resumen Se analizó la dieta del güitío de agua (Certhiaxis cinnamomeus) en un ecotono bosque palustre-bosque basimontano de Venezuela. Siete ejemplares fueron capturados con redes de niebla y forzados a regurgitar mediante la administración del emético tartrato anti- monio-potasio. De los 7 contenidos estomacales analizados, sólo 5 presentaron material identificable. Se obtuvieron 11 renglones alimentarios, tanto de procedencia animal (88,33%) como vegetal (11,66%). Los más frecuentes fueron los ácaros seguidos de coleóp- teros y huevos de insectos, ortópteros y restos vegetales que no pudieron ser definidos. C. cinnamomeus mostró una diversidad de dieta moderadamente alta (H’=2,46 bitios.ind–1). La especie es pre- dominantemente insectívora, con una amplitud de nicho de 0,11, lo que conduce a suponer que no presenta una homogeneidad preferencial de recursos en su dieta de artrópodos. Then, add to that picture a never-ending mix of cultures, from Amerindian to African and European, and you will be able to describe what we experienced during our Amazon Cruise. We also visited channels connecting two parts of a given river, sedimentary river islands in different stages, and oxbow lakes. By visiting each of these habitats we gained an understanding of the importance of microhabitats in the survival of the rich avian diversity of the Amazon. On some days we pulled the skiffs into the flooded forest to discover ferns, bromeliads, and ant colonies seemingly hanging from the tree branches, resembling a chandelier in an enormous cathedral.
