September 2018 Volume 49 Issue 9 Page 2 HANGAR ECHOES Presidents Message Sad Day!! From the President/Editor By Michael Stephan By the time you read this September will be upon us. Gone will be another summer of flying, and we get ready for the Fall. That means the Fall flying season starts to get in gear. September has several great events and October has some of my favorites. Bruce and Mary Ann already have a camping spot reserved for me at Cedar Mills for the Splash In. Some of the Fly Ins for this month include the Fall Fly in at Pecan Plantation and the Flights of our Fathers in Terrell, although like Airventure the Terrell event includes an airshow and there is an admission cost. We got new at the conclusion of last month’s Chapter meeting that the FB Library was changing it usage policy on the auditorium, and they will no longer be able to use it January 10, 1989, after a lengthy telephone conversation with free of charge. Unfortunately, the new rate will hamper Mr. Richard Vangrunsven, Red Marron, Ann & I ordered 2 RV-6 our ability to keep having our meetings there. This new tail kits. In May of 1993 these 2 first flew within 2 policy isn’t surprising. We’re thankful for all the years we days of each other. were able to have our meetings there. We will be able to I acquired an N number in honor of our EAA Chapter, continue with our meeting till the end of this year, and the N168TX for our aircraft. That was If you have any ideas or solutions, we are open to them. the last time I saw N168TX fly without me in it………Until Just let someone on the Board know. August 29th of this year. On that Wednesday, I watched as this RV-6 took off from McKinney National Airport headed for her We also got bad news that one of our best Young Eagle new home in Leesville, Louisiana. Ralph & his lovely wife pilots, Don Pellegreno, died in a plane crash of his Rose Anna, after a thorough interview, were approved by Ann & Parakeet in July. Don was a great guy, and he loved flying myself for the adoption of N168TX. Young Eagles. We will miss him. This has served us well for over 25 years and it was so sad to see her leave. I know that Ralph & Anna will take good care of the airplane as they have for their Cessna L-19. Coincidentally, Lauren Paine Jr. in the latest issue of Sport Aviation tells of his difficulty of selling his RV-8. One difference is Lauren wasn’t going to replace it with anything. Mel has acquired a Legend Cub and will continue to fly.

September 2018 Volume 49 Issue 9 Page 4 HANGAR ECHOES 210 Continued cross country flight, he needed a cross country endorsement to get to each lesson. After getting his commercial license, Ted spent his early career flying adventurers into and out of the Grand Canyon area. The company planes were the Cessna 206 and 210 type of planes flown on small dirt runways around the canyon. later in his career it was the twin turboprop Metroliners flying regional routes. He finally ended up here in Metroplex flying for American Airlines. Currently flying the Boeing 787 on international routes. Next year he plans to move to the Boeing 777, because he favors certain destinations, and the 777 is the only aircraft that travels there. But, Ted is not just about the big airline planes. He also owns a The upgraded instrument panel in Ted’s Cessna 210 Cessna 320 with the Ram Conversion. One of the nicest I’ve exciting to see it back in the air. Ted will have to get seen. As much as that plane can perform, it has a high per hour another plane for the backyard. price tag to operate it. The C-210 has nearly the performance of the C-320 but at a more reasonable cost, which is important because Ted has some traveling in his future. Ted and his wife have 4 sons that are grown now, are spread around the country and starting families of their own. So there is a need for a comfortable cross-country cruiser to use to visit all those grandkids. They have kids in Kansas, Georgia, Utah and a Son here inWaco. Also, Ted is not just interested in certified aircraft. He built a flew a very high powered RV-4. Ted likes to go fast. After years of flying it, he sold it. Recently, he purchased an RV-4 kit from a local builder, who decided to build other things. He plans to finish it as a Harmon Rocket. Now that the C-210 is flying, he will have more time to devote to the Rocket project. This was an interesting project to follow, and it is Ted’s Cessna-210 at home at GPM

September 2018 Volume 49 Issue 9 Page 5 HANGAR ECHOES Don owned several Don Pellegreno different aircraft. Along with the Piper Arrow that he shared with our Young Eagle groups, Don flew the Rose Parakeet, and a J3 cub. His wife Ann is the owner of their rare Fairchild T-31 trainer (Fairchild XNQ-1). She is also a well known pilot, who in 1967 in a Lockheed Electra, recreated the flight of Amelia Earhart. She dropped a flower wreath over Howland Island 30 years to the day of Amelia’s disappearance. A book titled World Flight: The Earhart Trail details the story. You can also read about her in the June 2017 issue of Sport Aviation.

By Michael Stephan While looking at the “Gone West” list in the recent issue of Sport Aviation, I stumbled across some sad news. Don Pellegreno, a long time participant in our Young Eagles Program, had passed away in July. At age 86 Don died in a fatal crash of his Rose Parakeet just south of his home at Farfield Airpark in Rhome, TX. Although not a member of our Chapter, for many years Don would show up at every Chapter Young Eagles event. He always had a smile on his face and loved sharing his love of flying with the kids. After every flight he would talk with the parents and he would always say something similar to, “This kid is a natural.” Or he would comment that he didn’t have to do much work because their child did Don Pellegreno flying the Fairchild T-31 most of the flying. Don was a great pilot to be around, and we will miss him.

September 2018 Volume 49 Issue 9 Page 6 HANGAR ECHOES Induction Leaks By Michael Stephan Induction Leaks...I heard about them. People talk about them. But I didn’t seem to care until I thought that I might have them. On my engine that is. My engine has always run rich. It starts to cough early in the leaning process. I didn’t know it was a problem until I flew with other similarly equipped airplanes and did some fuel usage comparisons. Last month was the last straw. After 12 years of flying my carbureted engine RV-8, I am going to solve this issue. I have had the carburetor checked years ago, so now I am investigating a possible “induction leak”. This article is the result of my research so far. So, my leak is your gain. What is an induction leak? Were do they come from, and what is the result? Some engine basics courtesy of a GAMI Induction tubes cast into the oil sump seminar. My four cylinder engine can be thought of as four powerplants sharing a common crankshaft. A smooth running engine will have an equal amount of power (torque) from every cylinder being placed on the crank. Conversely, a rough running engine will not. That power is created by combusting a fuel and air mixture. My ignition system is fine, so the fuel-air mixture will be the focus. The fuel air mixture starts at the Carburetor. Air passes through the venturi of of the carb, which due to a low pressure area, pulls in the fuel through the carbs jets at the proper fuel air ratio for combustion. This ratio is controlled manually by the mixture control. How does this mixture get to the cylinder? It gets pulled in by the piston. On the intake stroke, the intake valve opens and it sucks in the The upper induction tube that connects to the cylinder fuel air mixture as the piston moves to the bottom of the cylinder. If the “butterfly” valve in the carb is open of power in that cylinder causing a rough running engine. (full throttle) the pressure (manifold pressure) is at its closest Although the induction leaks affects all power settings, it is to ambient pressure. For my engine that is about 27 inches most noticeable when at idle, when the most vacuum in the of Manifold Pressure (MP). When the “butterfly” is closed intake system exists, i.e. the MP is at it lowest. (at idle) the carb opening is reduced and a vacuum is created There are some comprehensive tests to check for induction and the MP is low, 10 inches of pressure at idle in my leaks, but some can be found by a few simple checks. engine. • If you see smoke out the exhaust pipe, your sump After the carb, the fuel air mixture moves through one of casting could have a crack and oil is being sucked in and four intakes that are cast into the sump. While we talked Oshkosh in last month’s issue, projects were still being worked on. Ted’s Cessna 210 moves out of project phase and into flying phase. We have one less project to update. Charlie Wright’s hangar is still blanketed in fiberglass and epoxy dust as he continues to make progress on the cabin top of his RV-10. Top top is now at its final size, and there was a lot of material to remove to make room for the doors, which Charlie is now working on. The doors come in two halves that are bonded together while in position on the cabin. Once cured, there is a bunch of material to be cut off in order for them to fit inside the Windshield mounted on Bill Spitfire project frame in the cabin top. When you finally get that perfect fit, I plan to go and visit other member projects in the next then you attach the hinges on top. Not finished yet, there is the month, so look for more updates next month, and they are linkage and handles that keep that door closed and on the not all RVs. We have a Bearhawk, a OneX, a Sportsman airplane while in flight. There is a lot of little pieces that make to name just a few. all of that work, and Charlie is right in the middle of it.
