Not Your Mother’s Library Transcript Episode 11: Mamma Mia! and More Musicals (Brief intro music) Rachel: Hello, and welcome to Not Your Mother’s Library, a readers’ advisory podcast from the Oak Creek Public Library. I’m Rachel, and once again since Melody’s departure I am without a co-host. This is where you would stick a crying-face emoji. Luckily for everyone, though, today we have a brand new guest! This is most excellent, truly, because we are going to be talking about musicals, and I do not have any sort of expertise in that area. So, to balance the episode out with a more professional perspective, I would like to welcome to the podcast Oak Creek Library’s very own Technical Services Librarian! Would you like to introduce yourself? Joanne: Hello, everyone. I am a new guest! Hooray! (laughs) Rachel: Yeah! Joanne: So, I am the Technical Services Librarian here at the Oak Creek Library. My name is Joanne. I graduated from Carroll University with a degree in music, which was super helpful for libraries. Not so much. Rachel: (laughs) Joanne: And then went to UW-Milwaukee to get my masters in library science, and I’ve been working in public libraries ever since. I’ve always had a love of music since I've been in a child. My mom is actually a church organist, and so I think that’s where I get it from. Rachel: Wow, yeah. Joanne: I used to play piano—I did about 10 years and then quit. (laughs) So, I might be able to read some sheet music but probably not very well.

  • Million Dollar Quartet” by Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux at the Hippodrome Theatre Through December 2
“Million Dollar Quartet” By Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux At the Hippodrome Theatre through December 2 By James Cooper MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS … PRODUCTION Flashing lights, shimmering jackets and long musical solos radiate through the production of “Million Dollar Quartet,” now at the Hippodrome Theatre. Though the special effects and costumes are beneficial in some instances, the show lacks emphasis in the one area it should stress the most: the music. The whole story focuses on the decisions of four major musicians from the 1950s: Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Music is the main concept within the script, but it certainly isn’t the main concept within the performance. The show focuses on a single event: the night that all four musicians of the “Million Dollar Quartet” were present in the same space at the same time, the Sun Records Studio in Memphis on December 4, 1956. Elvis (Cody Slaughter) used to be a member of the Sun Records family but then he switched to RCA, a bigger label. Since this change, Elvis has lost contact with his former producer, Sam Phillips (Vince Nappo). As Elvis returns with his girlfriend Dyanne (Kelly Lamont) he makes it clear to Sam that he wishes he had stayed at Sun. Sam too wishes that Elvis had stayed, but his main focus is now on producing Johnny (David Elkins) and the up-and-coming Jerry Lee (Martin Kaye). All the while Carl (Robert Britton Lyons) has to decide whether or not he wants to leave Sun Records or move on to Columbia.

  • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.
