  • MONUMENT HILL 1928-2018 the 90Th Anniversary of the Fremantle War Memorial ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
MONUMENT HILL 1928-2018 The 90th anniversary of the Fremantle War Memorial ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ‘Monument Hill 1928-2018’ honours the ‘citizens’ of Fremantle who spent the better part of a decade after the end of WW1 lobbying authorities to build a fitting memorial of remembrance where families and friends could leave flowers and prayers for their war dead. After years of delays, controversies and lack of interest, thousands of people gathered on November 11, 1928, to commemorate the Remembrance Day unveiling of the Sailors and Soldiers Memorial. A collection of more than 3000 pounds was raised to fund the upkeep of the “noble column”. In a fitting repeat of history, ‘Monument Hill 1928-2018’ was made available to the public on Remembrance Day 2018, with all gold donations for the commemorative booklet raised for Legacy WA, which also celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018. Proudly supported by the City of Fremantle, which subsidised the printing and supplied the stunning cover image of the port city’s much-loved memorial, this historical treasure is available in print and online. Limited copies are available at Fremantle Library. Produced on behalf of Friends of Monument Hill, StreetWise Media thanks all sponsors and supporters who pulled together to produce this special 90th anniversary tribute to the men and women who sacrificed everything to defend Australia and its Allies since WW1. They include - WA Premier Mark McGowan, Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt, Federal MP Josh Wilson, State MP Simone McGurk, the Australian War Memorial, the Samson family, former Fremantle mayors Peter Tagliaferri and Richard Utting, Fremantle History Society, Fremantle Inner City Residents Association, the National Hotel, SCOOP Property and Finance, Fremantle resident Ra Stewart and Joint Venture Consulting Group director Ljiljanna Ravlich.

  • Spend the Day in Fremantle (Or Freo, As It’S Known to the Locals)
Spend the day in Fremantle (or Freo, as it’s known to the locals). Fremantle Prison Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most significant cultural attractions. Originally built as a high-security prison by convicts in 1850, it was only decommissioned as a prison in 1991. Open to the public since 1992, Fremantle Prison has been listed as one of the Top Ten attractions in Australia. Entry to the gatehouse is free of charge and includes the Convict Cafe, gift shop, prison gallery and interactive visitor centre. Without a doubt, the highlight of a visit to the prison is the entertaining tours conducted by experienced tour guides, who bring the rich folklore and stories of the prison to life. For a completely different perspective, experience the prison by night on an eerie tour by torchlight each Wednesday and Friday night. These popular tours are not for the faint hearted. Open Saturday to Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 5pm, Wednesday and Friday 9am to 9pm 1 The Terrace, Fremantle, WA Little Creatures Brewery Tour What better way to experience Fremantle than with the taste of Western Australia – Little Creatures beer. Grab a Pale Ale and a pizza and soak in the brewery atmosphere or wander out into the backyard to enjoy your beer and relax in the sunshine. You can also head to the Brewhouse Bar to pick up a six pack to take home. For the adventurous, you can hire a free bike and explore Fremantle for the day, or stay a while for a tasting of their full range of beers.

Fremantle Local History Collection 2714 PNEUMONIC INFLUENZA Dr Michelle McKeough Between June and August one hundred years ago, Fremantle was in the grip of an influenza epidemic. The virulent ‘Spanish flu’, was already causing wide- spread devastation in Europe, and by June 1919, the number of cases in Western Australia began to increase, rising to figures of nine and thirteen at a time. Initially, the old military camp at Blackboy Hill was used as a hospital for influenza patients, and part of Fremantle Hospital was also put aside. However, the disease became wide-spread very quickly, so much so that on 13 June, the Premier received notification from the Prime Minister that ‘action will now be taken under Quarantine Act to declare State of Western Australia infected with influenza’. On 30 July, the Health Inspector’s report revealed that in Fremantle, ‘during the past fortnight 48 cases have been reported. 36 houses have been quarantined and the majority of these premises have been visited twice daily’. By 2 August the situation had become so grave that a special meeting of Council was called by the mayor ‘to consider and deal with the problem of the large increase in the number of cases suffering from influenza in Fremantle’. At the conclusion of the meeting it was resolved to create a fund for the relief of necessitous cases and for voluntary workers to do domestic work.
